DEFINING WHO WE ARE
• Rotary’s research found that only 4 in 10 people have ever heard of us.
And “in name only.”
• Many people don’t know Rotary, so it’s harder for Rotary to attract the
new members and volunteers needed to achieve our full potential.
• Rotary is not earning full credit for the good work it does in communities
around the world.
• This is important not because we want credit, but because we need people
to understand the work we do so that they will want to join us.

WHAT IS ROTARY?
Sometimes we describe our clubs and activities in ways that are
confusing to the public.
We need to change our approach so that we bring Rotary’s story to
life, starting with your club and district.

WHAT IS ROTARY?
“Rotary is the best decision I’ve ever made. It’s a
global community of leaders who exchange ideas and
take action that results in sustainable impact wherever
we focus. We’re bound together by a common set of
values that transcends all cultures and religions.
Basically, it creates a worldwide network of lifelong
relationships.” ― Nicki Scott, Rotary Club of
Naperville Sunrise, Illinois, USA

a real difference in the world.” ― Brian Hall,
Rotary Club of Covington, Louisiana, USA

ROTARY IN EGYPT
Speaking points:
Rotary’s research found that only 4 in 10 people have ever heard of us. And another 4 in 10 have heard of us “in name only.”
Many people don’t know Rotary, so it’s harder for Rotary to attract the new members and volunteers needed to achieve our full potential.
Rotary is not earning full credit for the good work it does in communities around the world.
This is important not because we want credit, but because we need people to understand the work we do so that they will want to join us.
Speaking points:
This speaks to the important reasons people join Rotary:
To positively impact their communities
For the friendships and connections they enjoy
Speaking point:
And these are the same reasons people stay: for connection and community.
Speaking points:
These three ideas are the very essence of Rotary:
Rotary brings leaders together ― we are a catalyst for collaboration and for improvement in our communities.
We exchange ideas, bringing our expertise and our diverse perspectives to bear on community problems.
Then, because ideas are only the first part of the solution and Rotarians are interested in solving problems, Rotarians take action.
By taking these three thoughts ― JOIN LEADERS, EXCHANGE IDEAS, and TAKE ACTION ― we can help every Rotarian to create an “elevator speech” that reflects his or her personal Rotary experience and culture as well as these three elements.

Rotary offers some tips to consider when writing for social media, club and district websites, promotional materials, press releases, and more. This is our distinct, unified voice.
In 2011, Rotary embarked on a multiyear initiative of unprecedented scale to strengthen our image.
In addition to expanding public understanding of what Rotary does, we want to motivate, engage,
and inspire current and prospective members, donors, partners, and staff.

Speaking points:
Rotary wants all of its communications to be easily identifiable as Rotary communications, whether it’s a club website, billboard, or fundraising brochure. Rotary has a visual and voice tool kit on its Brand Center that will help clubs and districts present a consistent look in their communications. It has more specific information about a color palette and the use of our logo.
This and the following two slides show examples of real club and district websites that have adopted the new voice and visual identity.
Speaking points:
The look is clean and uncluttered and uses photos extensively. It appeals to both the public and Rotarians.
The publication Tell Rotary’s Story offers more specific guidelines, and Rotary’s Brand Center has customizable templates to download.
Speaking points:
This initiative encourages us to live and speak in the new voice by using inspiring stories and consistent messages and visuals to tell Rotary’s story.
We recognize that there are many wonderful stories to tell about Rotary. We all do so regularly.
Rotary is providing guidance and tools to help Rotarians better send this message in a more unified voice. But we do realize that clubs are autonomous and will continue to do what suits their needs. We just ask that we all be champions of Rotary.
The clarification of message and strong visual identity are inroads to helping us define, within our own parameters, what Rotary means to communities on a global scale.
Speaking points:
At the club level, we currently see a number of uses that may confuse the general public.
Some clubs personalize the message so much that it is difficult to tie it back to Rotary.
Speaking point:
The presentation of the club’s name and the Rotary wheel makes it clear that this is a Rotary club.
Speaking point:
If new people come to your club, how will they see it? How can your club be more appealing?

How can clubs embody these values?
