SO NOW YOU HAVE A COMPLETED PROFILE AND ARE READY TO GET GOING AND NETWORK
LinkedIn is all about networking. There are 3 main types of networks on LinkedIn:
LION - These users are totally open and will accept any invitation. The idea here is to connect to as many people as possible in order to reach out to more people. A larger network is particularly useful when prospecting for leads and doing research on people and companies.
Professional networker โ These professionals connecting up to further each othersโ careers. This would be the most typical LinkedIn user. A salesperson would connect to his or her clients, the client would connect to their suppliers etc. You donโt actually have to have met the other person but you will have dealt with them and deem there is a value being connected for both your careers.
Exclusive networker- This category of people will only ever connect to people they know well, trust and respect. This type of network is likely to be very selective and can be drawn upon for passing on introductions and recommendations. You could say that the exclusive networker is actually not increasing their connections, merely storing them digitally on LinkedIn. There can be several reasons for wanting to be an exclusive networker, keeping your connections and activities confidential is certainly a major one.
Source: http://theundercoverrecruiter.com/3-linkedin-networking-strategies-work/
Start by finding people you might know
Current and past colleagues
Old classmates
Friends โ old and new
Past employers
DONโT JUST HIT CONNECT โ LinkedIn takes spam very seriously
You have to tell how you know them and even asks you which job if you stated you worked with them!
Go to their profile
Connect โ fill in the small space โ write showing why you want to connect
Works well with recruiters
ORGANIZE YOUR CONNECTIONS LIST
You can tag and organize your connections a variety of ways
Organize early!
PRIVACY
If you are preparing for an interview โ you may not want them to know you have viewed their profile
Under privacy settings you can select what other see
BE AWARE: the more you limit your settings the less you will be able to see of others
You can ask the person who is a 1st line connection to someone to introduce your or you can send them a direct message or email telling them who you would like to connect you.
Look in the upper right corner for a little red number by an envelope to see if you have any pending contacts or messages
You can accept or ignore connection requests
You donโt have to pay to look for connections.
LinkedIn and Google are extremely close.
There are ways around it โ research the person โ put in name and position / company
Go to the company website and see if they have email lists or directory with names
If you have over 100 connections, more information opens up to include access to recruiters
70% that apply for a job have recommendations/referrals for the position
1% of people who just apply on-line get a job
Recommend others โ unwritten etiquette โ when you recommend they return the favor
Recommendations should be based on their professional skills
Building your presence is important, as is showing you are active.
Show your expertise. Focus on providing content relevant to your career. Provide thoughtful comments on articles. Be sure you are using proper grammar and spelling! LinkedIn does not have an autocorrect option (as of now), so write your comments in word to check spelling and grammar then cut and paste.
Rallypoint:
https://www.rallypoint.com/answers
Your social presence / influence can be ranked. http://support.klout.com โ 40-60 is a regular score โ Obama has a 90% score because of the amount of people that search.
1. Use Anchor Text in Links - Every LinkedIn profile can list as many as 3 links.
2. Finish Your Profile - This one is almost a no-brainer, but far too many of us havenโt taken the time to complete it.
3. Keyword-Optimize Your Job Titles - Optimizing your job titles slightly to include a few keywords is just smart. Key words should appear at least in 5 places on your profile.
4. Maximize Your Group Membership - Since the group names appear on your profile, search engines have no choice but to crawl the titles and learn more about who you are and what you do.
5. Aggressively Expand Your Network โ This is the perfect platform for connecting with colleagues but still maintaining a semblance of work-life separation on social media.
6. Optimize Your Job Descriptions โ โyour job descriptions on LinkedIn should be creative, truthful, descriptive and succinct.โ
7. Claim Your Vanity URL - Connecting your LinkedIn profile to your name will allow you to be found easier by real-life connections
8. Donโt overkill on Keyword Stuff -Take an approach of optimizing around secondary keywords that are still relevant and descriptive of your skill set.
9. Promote Your 9. LinkedIn Profile Elsewhere - Put a link to your LinkedIn profile on Facebook, Google+, and any websites you maintain to create inbound links.
10. Be Vigilant About Building Recommendations - 10 or more recommendations will elevate your profileโs search ranking.
11. Leave No Field Blank - Your LinkedIn profile shouldnโt leave too much to the imagination. Fully optimize your Honors & Awards and Languages.
12. Shamelessly Self-Promote - certainly canโt hurt, right?
13.Keep Collecting Endorsements - the more endorsements for your skills and talents that you get, the more often youโll appear in search results.

extensive graphic organizational chart that shows almost every location around the world where members of the U.S. military are working
Anything you do on-line โ add links
Spread your content across social media - The more active you are on social media, the better your chances of building an audience. But people tend to spend more time on some channels than others. That's why you have to use everything at your disposal to promote your content
Add links to other content - Of course, you want potential readers to check out the content you're promoting. Add websites, Pinterest resume/portfolio board, DoYou Buzz resume page, Twitter, SlideShare or SlideRocket
Write guest blogs on other sites- Posting guest blogs on other sites introduces you to people who may not have heard of you otherwise. It brings new people to your site.
Add links to your signature - When you receive an email, you may notice a signature with the sender's name, email, phone number and website. That sender had made it easy for you to find them online, and an email signature could do the same for you.
Update existing links - Studies show that new content fares better in search engines than old content. That means your most recent content will run circles around older posts. One way to breathe new life into older content is to update it for newer audiences.

You see I have mine set to friends, you can also set to friends and friends of friends or public.
DO view as others would see you. NOTE your profile and cover photos will be able to be seen by all
You can also customize who can contact you and send you friend requests
AGAIN, THIS IS CONSTANTLY CHANGING!! They open a new feature and then some things automatically become public.
You can also block others from tagging you in photos.
The photo shown here is from a recent college graduate. While there is nothing wrong with a 21 year old having a glass of wine with friends, you never know how an employer will look at this. You may want to turn off tagging as you job hunt because if the person tagging you allows the public to view their photos your name will be on this public photo.
You can see what others see. What can people tell about me by what they see here?
I am affiliated with the military
I have children
I belong to groups to include a sorority and Northern Wisconsin NaNoWriMo
If you upload photos from your mobile phone they may automatically appear public. You can change the settings by editing the photo.
NOTE: you can not turn your profile or cover picture private.
So weโve heard the bad . . . Why on earth would we use FB?
Ask network for input on your resume, let them know you are job hunting and for what!
Find out about companies and organizations you are interested in being a part of
What are they doing

You can use some of the posts on groups to increase your network
Professional organizations โ just as on LinkedIn, you can provide strong comments on posts to build your network and your presence

Facebook and LinkedIn arenโt your only tools.
Twitter is another tool you can utilize.
Remember, you can connect Twitter to LinkedIn โ#inโ connects twitter to linked in so you can separate personal and professional tweets
Create Your Handle
@name and experience
Same as Linked-In / Facebook
You have 160 characters on your bio โ use your bio with key words.
Area of expertise, years of experience, what you are looking for โ add # (make it blue)
140 For Each Tweet โ Less is More! Makes you think and be consice.
Direct people somewhere else - Can create shortened URL to connect to your LinkedIn profile (weโll show you how)
Hashtag (#) is how you can create taglines.
Twesume โ you can include your bio in this. See how the shown adds a picture related to her creative writing line of work?
Used with #twesume โ Tweet, Message or E-Mail to Potential Employers
Employers will ask for #twesume, use @ to connect to organizations/business handles
For example you might say #in 2012 @pennstate grad with 2 years marketing @dell looking for marketing manager.
Link to groups where people may know you
You can search twitter to find organizations and jobs โ common # include:
#hiring
#tweetmyjobs
#hr
#jobopening
#jobposting
#employment
#jobsearch
#joblisting
#jobs
Follow conversations โ after chat is done do a search through twitter www.searchtwitter.com
Retweet and be retweetable by making smart tweets โ this is part of your brand
If you have a specific organization or company you want to work for, follow them.
Often they post positions through their social media faster than they do on-line.
Just as with anything, you need to know how to search
If you want to work at NSA and search NSA jobs you may not find much, but if you search National Security Agency Jobs there is a whole twitter page dedicated to this.
Search multiple ways
Once again, this is a great way to find out about an organization or company.
It provides you with information on the organization/company
Lets you know what is going on within
Shows you who they are following or are connect to
Provides you with trends you may want to follow
Pinterest is a way in which you can show your creative side.
Many companies have Pinterest boards, again a great tool to research and learn about a company
If you want something a little different to make your resume stand out, there are many samples of graphic resumes
Show your work. You can create an interactive resume showing your certificates, awards, sample work, photos of you on the job, etc.
OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA:
Google + - Personalize at http://gplus.to โ use as a part of your image
Blogs - use to create a professional image and show your expertise
Instagram โ create a portfolio or series of pictures that show you at work
You-Tube โ create a creative video resume or advertisement, show you in action
Vine โ short video or advertisement about you, show samples of you at work
Create a professional image that links to each other
Make sure your private social media is private
There are billions of visits a day. Choose where you want to be seen. Choose HOW you want to be seen.
Make this a part of your branding.
What social media do you need to belong to? Discuss โ you donโt HAVE to belong to any, BUT it can be a tool
If you are in a field such as marketing, sales, design or computer programming it may be more important to have a variety of platforms.
Do you need an on-line presence? If so increase it!
So how do you increase it?
Get involved and active in discussions
Be active on the platforms you are using โ weekly update your proflles
What does your presence say about you? Find out! Use multiple search engines and search for yourself.
What does your presence say? What if it isnโt so great?
Clean it up!
