2. How can we use Newspapers
as a Task Based Language
Teaching tool ?
3. Objective of my presentation :
➢ Here in this presentation I am sharing my
ideas about how newspapers can help us to
learn the English language.
➢ What is the learning process? ( Online or
face to face )
➢ How we can use newspapers as an online
learning process.
➢ What should be the outcome of this
method?
4. ● Task Based Language Learning :-
❖ What is Task Based Language Learning ?
“ An activity required Learners to arrive at an outcome from
given information through some process of thought and which allowed
Teachers to control and regular that process was regarded as a task.” (
Prabhu)
How to conduct a task-based classroom is an issue of theoretical
andpractical interest in the field of second language acquisition. In A
Framework for Task-Based Learning, Willis draws thoughtful insights
fromcurrent research regarding communicative language teaching and
develops a practical guide for second/foreign language teachers on
howto conduct task-based learning (TBL).
5. ➢ How Newspapers help us to learn language :
➢ The newspaper (both digital and print) is a great resource
for learning that we typically don’t associate with
education.
➢ In newspapers we come to know new words for new
situations.
➢ Newspapers make us aware about the current situation and
crisis of the world. We come to know various idioms, words.
➢ Newspapers through we can develop our speaking skill and
writing skills.
➢ To engage Learners for learning language effectively. ( By
giving them tasks).
6. ● Task Based Language Learning :-
First provide them newspapers and assign them a tasks or
activities :
✍ To write down new words you find from newspaper.
✍ To find out several idioms and phrases used in newspaper.
✍ Which tense used in headlines of the newspaper.
✍ Collect all responses and discuss with all the students.
✍ Read the following paragraph and identify 3 new vocabulary words
and write its
meaning.
✍ Identify antonyms and synonyms of any 3 words from the following
paragraph.
7. ➢ Paul Sanderson had written a book on " Using
Newspaper in the classroom" is the
collection of over 13o practical and creative
Newspaper based activities to use with young
adult and adult Learners from pre- intermediate
to advanced levels.
8. How we can work online with the help of newspaper activities :
● Because of the Corona pandemic we have to focus on better
quality of online teaching. How to engage students that is the
most important question. So let's see how newspapers help us to
engage Learners in the quality of learning…
● This is helpful for participation of students in an online
environment through the comments feature of Google
Classroom. We can also use google docs etc.
● Teachers and students can work in a collaborative exchange of
information. This can be synchronous or asynchronous.
9. Raquel Ribeiro has mentioned in her blog that three ways to use
news I English language lessons :
Have students spot
the verbs used in
some key sentences
and explain the
characteristics of the
tenses in the context
they are being used.
Encourage them to
look up the words /
expressions they don’t
know in an online
dictionary.
Dictation is a simple
but effective strategy
for both reading &
writing.Have them
underline the actions in
the given sentences
and write the verb
tense used. Use the
opportunity to also
encourage them to
explain the context for
each verb tense.
Choose some
sentences and change
the verb or word. Have
students investigate the
article in order to spot
and correct the
mistakes.
1. 2. 3.
10. ● Give instructions and guidance via comments or video calling
platform.
● Students can interact via comments according to the teacher’s
guidance and information.
● Provide a newspaper article.
● So this is how learning happens on online platforms.
11. ❏ There are many ways to improve your vocabulary but reading
newspapers is considered as one of the best options.
❏ In newspapers we come to know new words for new situations.
12. - This is helpful to engage students in an online classroom.
( Both the way Synchronous and Asynchronous).
- By these activities Students get motivated and they feel
confident to deal with day to day life.
- As the newspapers connect their lives with their
surroundings, this is the more practical method and the
change can prove more effective, especially in developing
the vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms, guessing the
meaning based on the contexts for effective language
speaking and writing.
