3. Meaning of Trait Approach
Trait Approach тАУ Trait approach is
also known as dispositional
approach in psychology where a
specific behaviour pattern (here
leadership) is measured against the
traits of the individual. Traits are
set of behaviour patterns or habits
which remain same over time.
5. Trait Approach тАУ Thomas Carlyle proposed this
approach of leadership in 1840. Francis Galton
(1869) explored it further and said that history is
shaped up by extraordinary leaders who are
born with specific traits. This approach argues
that leaders have certain differentiating traits
(personality or behavioural) by birth. And
leadership is a function of specific traits such as
age, height, intelligence, academic
achievements, judgmental ability and insight (1).
It assumes that leaders are born with required
traits and characteristics.
7. Stogdill (1974) suggested that Leaders can
be differentiated from others on the basis of
following factors:
1. Capacity,
2. Achievements,
3. Responsibility,
4. Participation & involvement, and
5. Socio-economic status.
He reviewed the leadership traits and
identified that - physique and
appearance, intelligence, knowledge,
responsibility, and self-confidence are most
common traits found in leaders.
