The MyPlatefood group recommended listings are appropriatefor individuals who get less than 30 minutes per day of moderate physical
activity, beyond normal daily activities. You will need to make recommendation adjustments for clients who are more phy sically active.
2
For 3-day diet record, totalthe quantity eaten over three days for each food group on a separatesheet, then divide by three to determine
average daily intake. Report averages in thetable above.

When completing theComparison Chart, be mindful that you will need to use your professionaljudgment when deciding what to include in the
Oils/Fats (tsp) and Discretionary/empty calories (kcals) sections.
Examples in the Oils/Fats (tsp) category may include: salad dressing, butter, oils, etc.; there are 4.5 grams in a tsp.
Examples in the Discretionary/empty calories (kcals) section may include: energy drinks, soda, alcohol, high- octane desserts, etc.

At the time you completed your Diet History Questionnaire, we asked you to
report usual frequencies and portion sizes over the past year. Below you will
see your results. We have calculated your usual daily intake of nutrients and
food groups, and provide you with the current recommended daily intakes for
your age and gender.
These nutrient and food group intakes are only as good as the accuracy of the
information provided by you and the ability of the instrument to evaluate your
diet. Long dietary questionnaires ask individuals about many foods and portion
sizes and cannot be done with complete accuracy. Filling out the questionnaire
requires a fair amount of averaging and remembering which can be difficult.
Furthermore, it is possible that the questionnaire may not have asked you
enough about your diet to reflect your true intake. This is especially true if
many of the foods that you eat were not listed on the questionnaire or if you
prepare foods in special ways that we did not ask about. In particular, the
measurement of the number of calories you consume may not be accurate.
However,
in most cases, the information below provides a reasonable indication of your
overall diet.

Observations
Process of Completing the DHQ:
The process of completing the DHQ was a lot more intensive than I ever would have imagined. As the
interviewer, it felt like I was talking forever and if I was doing this with any other person besides a nutrition
student, they would be thoroughly annoyed. As an interviewee, I was fine with answering all of the questions but I
realized that there could be a large amount of error. For example, I recently started a vegetarian diet so my
current diet wasn’t reflective of the whole year. It was also hard to remember exactly how I ate before the diet/
lifestyle change.
Over the FFQ was highly extensive and could get a large amount of error from false reporting. I think it would
be good for participants to realize certain habits and work on those, such as the frequency of alcohol intake. Even
though it was time consuming, I do feel that it gave an accurate report and gave important information that I can
now provide to my partner. The list of foods seemed complete for the most part, I think there could be a benefit
to asking how much gum a person chews.
Compare and Contrast dietary intake assessment methods:
The MyPlate recommendation for fruit was to consume 2 cups a day. In the 3-day food record the client
reported consuming 0.5 cups per day, while the FFQ showed consumption of 0.9 cups per day. Results from both
FFQ and the 3-day food record was close and seemed to accurately reflect the amount the client consumes on an
average day.
The MyPlate recommendation for vegetables was to consume 2.5 cups a day. In the 3-day food record the
client reported consuming 0.4 cups per day, while the FFQ showed consumption of 1.8 cups per day. While doing
the 3-day food record interview, the client disclosed that the amount of vegetables they ate during the 3 days
was not normal. The FFQ more accurately showed an average consumption, and still may have been high, as the
client may have felt the need to over report.
The MyPlate recommendation for grains was to consume 6 ounces a day. In the 3-day food record the client
reported consuming 3.4 ounces per day, while the FFQ showed consumption of 6.2 ounces per day. Again the 3-
day food record was inaccurate when it came to consuming grains as it was an odd couple of days. The FFQ was
able to show the clients general trend and that they are meeting the recommendation.
The MyPlate recommendation for protein foods was 5.5 ounces a day. In the 3-day food record the client
reported consuming 3.5 ounces per day, while the FFQ showed consumption of 10.7 ounces per day. During the
7. FFQ, there was many questions about this, and the client was more hesitant on this section and they seemed
more unsure of the answers on this one. This leads me to believe they over reported and an accurate amount of
protein consumption for this client would lie somewhere between the results of the 3-day food record and the
FFQ.
The MyPlate recommendation for dairy was 3 cups a day. In the 3-day food record the client reported
consuming 1.5 cups per day, while the FFQ showed consumption of 2 cups per day. Both results were comparable
and reliable, and client was aware they should be getting more dairy.
The MyPlate recommendation for added oils/fats was 6 tsp. a day. In the 3-day food record the client
reported consuming 3.2 tsp per day, while the FFQ showed consumption of 17.8 tsp per day. I believe the FFQ
was abnormally high because there was questions about cooking with oils and the client rarely did this but most
of the time they aren’t spreading butter on bread of over consuming oils. Overall I think the questions may have
confused the client leading to over reporting and that the 3 day food record showed a more accurate
consumption.
The MyPlate recommendation for discretionary calories was less than 210 kcals a day. In the 3-day food
record the client reported consuming 152 kcals per day, while the FFQ showed consumption of 945 kcals per day
in discretionary calories. I thought this number was extremely high and I think the discrepancy might have come
from over reporting on the amount of fats, sugar, and alcohol they drank. There were even times when the client
said, “I think that’s too much but the next option is way to less.” The client agreed that not everyday is the same
and some days there may be no discretionary calories and days were most of the calories come from this source.
I feel in this case the 3-day food record was more accurate.
Nutrition Advice:
I would recommend they increase their dairy intake by one more additional dairy cup equivalent. This
client like greek yogurt and milk so I suggested adding a glass of milk to either lunch or dinner, or if they don’t
wish to do that they might like having a greek yogurt as a mid afternoon snack.
I would also recommend decreasing Calories from discrentionary foods. We discussed limiting alcohol to one
drink per hour when going out to the bars and making sure to eat a balanaced meal before hand. We also talked
about eating candy and other dessert items every once in a while as apposed to every day.
I would recommend increasing fruit and vegetable intake. For example, having fruit with her greek yogurt as
a snack or eating carrots and hummus as another alternative snacks. They could also add fruit to their oatmeal in
the morning, such as peaches, apple, and blueberries. Additionally they enjoyed steamed vegetables so I
recommended making a serving of steam broccoli, carrots, or any vegetable of their choosing for part of dinner.
Additionally, I would want to check in to make sure they understood protein portion sizing as their reports
different so drastically. I would educate them that a serving of chicken would be the size of a deck of cards and
that 3 ounces is generally 1 serving of protein.
8. Experience and Reflection:
I had always heard that it was sort of a pain to complete these FFQ but I think It was needed for all of use to do
it so we could really understand and sympathize with people that have to complete these. It is already a known
limitation that it is extremely time consuming, and I found this to be more than true. To counteract this, a major
strength of the FFQ is to give us the idea of a bigger picture when it comes to someone’s eating habits. I felt like
the process itself allowed for some self-reflection on certain habits and then getting to review the report
reinforced the consequence of certain habits
