Active Learning Dietary Counseling

Partners will briefly review their 3-day dietary intake from their nutrition portfolio with
one another. Verbally discuss the growth each of you had doing this project. (10 minutes
per partner)
Please answer the following questions in writing below:
1. What did you learn about the way you are eating?

2. What changes did you make and why to you eating behaviors?

3. How can this benefit you in the way you counsel your patients in dietary analysis?

Work together to develop a dialog for discussion for a patient during dietary counseling
and note it below.
1. How will you initiate the counseling session? Site an example

2. How will you establish rapport with your patient? What body language or body
mechanics will be helpful in providing the professional and confidential rapport needed
in a counseling session?
3. How will you assess the patient’s nutrition and dental IQ?

4. What visual aids or educational information would enhance the learning during a
counseling session regardless of these factors?

5. What diet modifications would you recommend for a patient on a high sugar diet to
reduce caries risk? Give an example.

6. What recommendations would you make to a patient to reduce a high fat diet? Give an
example.

7. List what you feel are good ground rules for helping to set realistic patient goals for
nutrition changes.
