INTRODUCTION
CNE provides information and skills of current issues, prepare for discussions
and help to develop problem solving skills.
Continuing nursing education programme should be developed by nurses
and conducted within nursing or in general education system in cooperation
with the nurses.
DEFINITION
“Continuing education of health workers includes the
experiences after initial training which help health care
personal to maintain and improve existing and acquire new
competences relevant to the performance of their
responsibilities. Appropriate continuing education should
reflect community needs in health and local to planned
improvement in the health of the community”

 Continuing Nursing Education is planned educational activities
intended to build upon the educational and experimental bases
of the professional nurse for the enhancement of practice,
education, administration, and research or theory development to
the end of improving the health of the public.

To gain knowledge, skills and attitude that will
enable them to perform their jobs better.
To learn new nursing roles, techniques or skills.

Improvement of professional practice.
To motivate the staff to seek the latest knowledge.
To keep the nurses with the nurse's latest
development of technologies.
Evaluate the effectiveness of the approved units
activities.
The association can contribute to the provision of
quality of nursing care by facilitating professional

NEED OF CNE
To ensure safe and effective nursing care.
To meet the needs of population and should to
the needs of service.
Development of Nurses will occur be updating
their knowledge and prepare them for
specialization.
For career advancement.
Professional roles are altered as society changes and as new
knowledge and technologies emerge.
To acquire specialized skills of personnel and meet technologies
adjuncts.
Clinical specialists are needed for direct patient care and for teaching
and consultative roles to help the students and staff nurses to reach
higher level of competency.
Nurses with research aptitudes and preparation are needed.
Nursing functions require a high degree of skill knowledge,
competence and educational preparation.
The demand for specialized Nursing services is increasing more
rapidly.
Nurses in administrative positions need to increase their
understanding of the administrative process and to design effective
methods of maximizing the contribution of individual helps to
provide Nsg services to patients.
Planned programmers are needed to increase their competence as
practitioners
Needs for additional preparation for the positions are already
holding or to prepare themselves for other positions.
It provides opportunities for educational growth compatible with
the realities of both work situation and the home responsibilities.
In the world scientific advancement , technological innovations,
social changes are occurring rapidly, and new patterns of health
care personnel are emerging to meet these needs and demands
qualified nurses are essential.
To provide and prepare faculty who see continuing Nursing
education as a personal responsibility as well as professional and
university responsibility.
To provide a varity of continuing Nursing education opportunities
of high quality to nurses in both education and service changes.

Provision for school and nursing faculty involvement in planning

maintain high educational standards for the programme.
An adequate staff is essential to planning, implementing and
evaluating a program which is based on learning needs, and which
has an impact on the quality of nursing care provided.
Staff services are required with sufficient qualities and number to
implement the planned program(Advisory, Secretariat,
Administrative, Supportive, Assistant with research, publicity,
evaluation tools, data analysis and computer programming)
Continuing nursing education programme may be
decentralized(i.e., Faculty of an academic department would
initiate, plan. implement and evaluate its own program of
continuing education) or centralized (i.e., Separate
department or extension division is responsible for the
continuing nursing education programme for the entire
university) maybe a combination of both.

1) Establishing goals with the purpose or philosophy
Purpose based on the learning needs, so it must be reviewed by time
to time and states as appropriate.
It provides a structure to the planning of programme.
Ask;
What is to be done?
What is it necessary?
How is to be done?
Where is to be done?
When is to be done?
Who should do the job?
2) Establish goals & objectives
 The objective must be specific and it is a desired end
accomplishment.
 It help the nurse in identifying and meeting the current
learning needs.
 Helps to identify the influence of societal changes in the
practice.
 Help to promote the leader ship quality.
 Helps to improve critical thinking.
3) Determine needs &
priorities
Assessments of needs should be done by survey,
through mailed questionnaire, interview etc.
After assessing the needs, prioritization of needs
to be done.
4) Assess available sources
 Careful assessment of faculty, facilities and finance are
important.
5) Plan the budget
Separate budget is required for each specific activity.
Budget requires ascertaining all the anticipated costs of the
offering.
 Sometimes budget for program will be sanctioned by
government, university grants or fee collected from
participants.
6) Selection of resources
ⴲ The resources should be categorized as financial
resource, human resource, facilities, equipment,
and supplies.
7) Implementing
the program

of objectives and the
resource available.

DEFINITION - EVALUATION
Evaluation is the process of finding out how the development
or training process has affected the individual, team and the
organization.
Evaluation is a value judgement on an observation,
performance test or indeed any data whether directly
measured or inferred.

  • 23. 1) Establishing goals with the purpose or philosophy Purpose based on the learning needs, so it must be reviewed by time to time and states as appropriate. It provides a structure to the planning of programme. Ask; What is to be done? What is it necessary? How is to be done? Where is to be done? When is to be done? Who should do the job?
  • 24. 2) Establish goals & objectives  The objective must be specific and it is a desired end accomplishment.  It help the nurse in identifying and meeting the current learning needs.  Helps to identify the influence of societal changes in the practice.  Help to promote the leader ship quality.  Helps to improve critical thinking.
  • 25. 3) Determine needs & priorities Assessments of needs should be done by survey, through mailed questionnaire, interview etc. After assessing the needs, prioritization of needs to be done.

  • 27. 5) Plan the budget Separate budget is required for each specific activity. Budget requires ascertaining all the anticipated costs of the offering.  Sometimes budget for program will be sanctioned by government, university grants or fee collected from participants.

  • 29. 7) Implementing the program ¤ The program must be implemented as per the set of objectives and the resource available. ¤ Develop an agenda ¤ Prepare correspondence to guest speakers ¤ Conduct the educational program.
  • 30. 8) Evaluating the program Evaluation must do at the end of the program to identify the successful implementation. Can be use rating scale, interviews, attitude test, observation of skills, questionnaire, pre and post-tests or audio/video tapes.
  • 31. DEFINITION - EVALUATION Evaluation is the process of finding out how the development or training process has affected the individual, team and the organization. Evaluation is a value judgement on an observation, performance test or indeed any data whether directly measured or inferred.
