 PLANNING:-
A successful continuing nursing education program is the result of careful and detailed planning.
Aspects of continuing nursing education planning:
 Broad planning has to be done by institution agencies responsible for continuing nursing education
 Specific planning has to be done by individuals for their own continuing education
 Planning is essential to:
-Meet the nursing needs
-Use available resources
-Meet needs at all levels i.e., local, state, regional, national and international
-Avoid duplication and fragmentation of efforts
-Keep at a minimum, any gaps in meeting the continuing education needs of nurses.
-The selection of teaching faculty may depend upon the availability of the person and his expertise or teaching
ability. The content of the program is designed around faculty knowledge and learning needs
of the participants
-In interdisciplinary approach requires representation of all the groups involved; determination of common
and compatible goals for successful programming
-Planning is an ongoing process, the rapid technologic advances and proliferation of knowledge demands
continuous planning to meet ever changing learning needs
Planning Process :-
1.Establishing goals with the purpose or philosophy of the organization: Purpose gives direction in planning.
It identifies the reason for existence. Purpose are based on the learning needs and societal needs; so it has to
be reviewed from time to time and restated as appropriate.
Planning formula
It provides a framework for program planning
-Understand clearly what your unit is expected to do in relation to the work assigned to it
-Break the unit work into separate jobs in terms of man power, material and money you have at your disposal
Think each job responsibilities.
Necessary Alternate methods which are necessary to meet the goals. Look for better ways of doing it in terms
of the utilization of men, materials, equipment and money.
-Study the flow of work, availability of material and equipment best suited to do the job.
-Time schedule for the maximum utilization of time, money, and material.
skills are needed to do the job successfully; select or train the
individuals best suite
Determine what skills are needed to do the job successfully.
2. establishing goals and objectives -Planning moves direct toward goals that are significant and realistic and
can be attained Goals serve to stimulate and direct action and should be reachable.
Objectives -to assist the nurse in identifying and meeting current learning needs and those needs generated
by changing professional practice To encourage the nurse to identify and influence society.
changes which have implications for nursing and to modify practice accordingly
-To promote the development of the leadership potential of the nurse
-To identify nursing problems and in seeking solutions to them
-To develop varied teaching methods for extending nursing knowledge and competency
-To disseminate new information from varied channels
-To assist the nurse educator in increasing teaching effectiveness
-To facilitate a return to practice
-To assess the health needs of nurses, hospitals and the community to plan, implement, and evaluate
educational programs in hospitals and health facilities
-To seek opportunities for and collaborate with other health disciplines to effect improvement in the delivery
of healthcare systems
3. Determining needs and priorities (the course of action required to meet the specific objective): Assessment
of needs will be done by survey, through mailed questionnaires, interview (formal and informal discussions)
with participants (feedback) and checklist, After assessing the needs prioritization of needs has to be done.
4. Assess the available resources for establishing the program
Careful assessment of ways and means to meet the established program goals. Faculty., finances and facilities
may be seen as the major resources required for a continuing nursing education program. A broad survey of
the major resources are necessary to the total continuing nursing education program and a more detailed
assessment for any specific course or activity. Planning involves deciding upon the resources necessary to the
activity and then determining the availability.
Adequate financial support, appropriate faculty, facilities with easy accessibility space, and necessary
equipment are required to conduct the offering.
5. Plan the budget appropriate for the program: A separate budget is required for each specific activity and
each individual offering is expected to be self-supporting. budgeting requires ascertaining all the anticipated
costs of the offering the fee.
The fee is based on the cost involved and the expected enrolment sometimes budget for in-service training or
continuing education programs will be sanctioned by the government, university grants or fees collected from
participants. The coordinators have to write the proposal after the problem has been identified and the
substantiating data collected, guidelines has to be studied and to be followed in writing the proposal.
WRITING THE PROPOSAL
The proposal should be written with carefulness clear, concise familiar terms which include enough details so
that reviewer have a through understanding of what the project intends to accomplish.
A. Format for proposal preparation:

 Description of work performed at each stage and duration
 Show how work will be organized
 Personal handling of each component of work.
D. Budget Narrative

6. Organization
Programming of professional courses in nursing is a joint responsibility of a Director of Continuing Nursing
Education and a Dean of the School of Nursing. The formal channels of communication make possible the
optional use of the nursing faculty to explore the needs of continuing nursing education, to set priorities, to
plan courses, and to teach them. University faculty may be assigned to continuing education in nursing as a
part of the regular teaching load or on an extra compensation basis. The opportunity for faculty involvement
is highly desirable and the provision of advisory committee at the operational level is needed.
CONCLUSION
After completion of the nursing training, nurse has register their names professional organizations. The nurse
still needs to be educated either in the form of in-service or continuing education. The teacher has to develop
teaching material and conduct of research to improve the standards of nursing. Post-nursing education consists
of orientation, supervision , in-service education, evaluation and pre-registration. New graduates need to have
a well-planned and organized orientation to the area of their posting. .
