4. What is a tsunami?
• A tsunami is a series of waves caused by earthquakes or undersea volcanic
eruptions.
• they build up to higher and higher heights as the depth of the ocean decreases. The
speed of tsunami waves depends on ocean depth rather than the distance from the
source of the wave. Tsunami waves may travel as fast as jet planes over deep waters,
only slowing down when reaching shallow waters. While tsunamis are often referred
to as tidal waves, this name is discouraged by oceanographers because tides have
little to do with these giant waves.
7. Before a Tsunami
• Know if your local area could be struck by a tsunami.
• Talk with your family and prepare an emergency plan.
• Identify your evacuation area, unplug all the appliances before leaving the house.
8. During a Tsunami
• STAY CALM!
• Leave the area immediately if you are in the beach leave quickly but safely.
• Go atleast 1 kilometer inland or 35 meters above the sea level.
9. After a Tsunami
• Stay Calm
• Listen to the instructions of local government.
• If you can help, help other who are in need.
