The presentation was developed for the students at NAMI College during my guest lecture on 'Solid Waste Management' and sharing my experience with Plastic Ban movement. The presentation was delivered on 11th Feb 2018.

2. “Kathmandu valley alone produces
approximately 900 tons of waste daily.
Kathmandu being the fastest-growing
metropolitan in South Asia at 4% per year,
waste management is a huge challenge”.

6. ● The total number of plastic bags used per day in all 58 municipalities
of Nepal is 8143902
● Similarly, the total number of plastic bags used per day in
Kathmandu valley is 4791290.00
● It requires just 180 Days to cover Kathmandu city with a layer of
polythene bag
● 52 times polythene bags produced in one day can encircle the ring
road of Kathmandu
“One of the in global concern for efficient solid waste management is plastic waste--
especially the single used plastic bags, which only 1 to 3% is recycled worldwide”.

● 160,000 plastic bags are used every second!
● 5 trillion plastic bags are produced yearly. They can encircle the
world 7 times if aligned together.
● Plastic will only start degrading after 700 years and will only fully
degrade in 1000 years. This means that all the plastic that has ever
been produced has not degraded yet.
● Approximately, 556,581,731,702 plastic bags are produced
Worldwide, this year.

7. Redefining
the Plastic bag ban movement in Nepal

8. • Our mission against plastic bags
started from Sankhu targeting 1.6
million pilgrims visiting Salinidhi
during a month long “Swasthani
Mela”.
• Salinadhi comparatively is the
cleanest river present in
Kathmandu, making it extremely
important to safeguard its natural
state. We pitched our idea of
spreading awareness among locals
and pilgrims”.

9. Socio-Economic Impact
Detrimental to Tourism and
Farming: Plastic bags are
detrimental to the
strategically important
industries to Nepal. In a
primarily agrarian economy,
plastic bags jeopardize the
soil health of the country.
Trade Deficit: Nepal used to be
a major jute producer three
decades ago, with jute exports
comprising one of the major
sources of foreign exchange.
Today Nepal imports 80
percent of its jute requirement
from India and Bangladesh.
Employment and Value Addition: the
alternative bag industry has the
potential of creating relatively more
employment both immediately in bag
manufacturing sector and the larger
supply chain of locally sourced
biodegradable materials such as
cotton, jute, hemp, aloe and paper.

10. Environmental Impact
Obstacle to Waste Disposal:
Contrary to popular belief that
plastic bags help with waste
disposal, they do more damage
to the solid waste management
than perceived.
Non-biodegradable: In average
plastic bags are used for only 12
minutes, but they remain in our
surrounding for thousands of
years, degrading into smaller
particles yet remaining intact as
plastic polymers.
Global Warming: Plastic bags are
a petroleum product—a major
contributor to global warming.

12. Impact so far
● The biggest supermarkets like Bhatbahteni, Saleways, and Big Marts have adopted the the regulation.
● The campaign was solely led by the youths under the age of 30 and was one of the biggest
achievements so far in terms of making it a successful campaign.
● The Government in its 2016 budget speech plans to expand the regulation of plastic throughout the
country. The same budget has has included ban on polypropylene.
● Plastic bags ban has creating opportunities for Nepali entrepreneurs to come up with alternatives of
plastic bags.
● Plastic bags ban published in National Gadget is awaiting a strong regulating body to entirely execute
this ban.

13. Limitations & Challenges forward
● The 2015 Nepal earthquake was a great tragedy. It entirely changed the priority and gave rise
to the plastic bags manufacturers to make it available in the market.
● Unstable government and occasional elections are the biggest factor to make plastic bags
ban effective for its implementation.
● Not having coordination between Environment Division, Kathmandu Metropolitan City and
Nepal police for effective implementation.
● Not having comparable alternatives of plastic bags in the market.

14. Immediate Steps to make plastic
bags ban Successful
● Start the campaign and work with new Government in different level to successfully implement
the plastic bags all over the country.
● Facilitate the Government to give subsidy to the entrepreneurs who wants to invest on
alternatives of plastic bags.
● Framework should be made with the proper clarity of roles and responsibilities of different
stakeholders so that the policy be implemented regardless of changing government.
● Impose heavy fines against the violators of the law (Inclusive of both general public and
dealers).

15. The spirit and enthusiasm of Nepali youths will definitely come back again.
We will once again make the plastic bags ban successful.
