Future Academies Primary Schools
Knowledge—Aspiration—Respect
Dear Parents,
As we head into our final term of the school year I reflect on the success so far for our three
schools. Just before term break our Year Six children took their SATs tests; whilst we will not receive
the externally marked results until July, my belief from seeing our well-prepared pupils is that we can
look forward to a positive outcome.
In this term our younger children will take assessments and screening checks that will confirm
the strength and excellence of our teaching. The final summer term is also the time when we learn
which teachers will not be rejoining Future Academies in September; some will gain promotions
elsewhere, and some will relocate their homes and families. We have been busy recruiting the very
best teachers for your children, so that our happy and high-achieving schools will continue to excel.
You will hear more news of this in July.
Congratulations to the two teams of Key Stage Two pupils from Churchill Gardens and
Millbank for getting through to the finals of the London Mayor’s Mathematics challenge: Count on
Us. They gained first and second places in their heats, so we will all have our fingers crossed for their
success in the 2015 Grand Final to be held on 9th June at City Hall. The top school is awarded the
Count on Us Challenge Trophy , medals are given for participants and maths prizes for the schools
who come first, second and third. Best of luck to the Future Academies competitors!
Alyson Russen,
Executive Principal.
E-SAFETY TIP OF THE MONTH
Keep all equipment that connects to the internet
in a family space. For children of this age, it is
important to keep internet use in family areas so
you can see the sites your child is using and be
there for them if they stumble across something
they don’t want to see.

2. Staff news
A very warm welcome to Ms Castano
who joins us this term. Ms Castano will
be teaching Spanish to Oxford and
Cambridge class pupils in our weekly
Spanish Club.
Perseverance
We want children to understand the role that
perseverance and practice play in experiencing
success and achieving the targets set both by
themselves and adults.
In assemblies and classrooms we have spoken to
children about:
Perseverance – keeping on trying even if
something is not easy or achieved the first
time it is attempted.
Practice – if we want to feel success or achieve
our goals we must practice regularly. This
practice applies to all areas of life.
Failure – we do not always feel success or
reach our targets the first time we try, when
we feel this way it is important to persevere
and try again.
Success – when we reach our goals or the
targets we set for ourselves or those set for us
by others.
When speaking to children we have used examples of
prominent individuals who have experienced success
due to their own perseverance and ability not to give
up when faced with difficult situations.
Purpose and Success in Lessons
In Reception and Year One, pupils are
taught to explicitly understand the
purpose of each lesson through a ‘We Are
Learning To’ (WALT) or a ‘Learning
Objective’ (LO). This is introduced at the
beginning of each lesson and revisited
throughout the course of the lesson to
ensure that pupils are clear on what the
learning and target for each lesson is.
Children regularly have opportunity to
self-assess their own success in relation to
this.
3. Sport at Pimlico Primary
Westminster Synagogue Visit
As part of the Religious Education
curriculum at Pimlico Primary, children
in Reception and Year One learn about
the different faiths and beliefs which
people have in Britain and across the
world. Pupils are taught about the
importance of tolerance and respect
for all religions and the similarities and
differences between them.
Children in Oxford and Cambridge
classes enjoyed a visit to the
Westminster Synagogue on May 15th
.
The children had an opportunity to
learn about different beliefs and
aspects of Judaism.
In addition to their weekly Physical Education (PE) lessons
and Take Home Sports Kit, pupils have recently had
opportunity to take part in Athletics Days and Holiday
Sports Programmes.
By providing the children with a range of opportunities to be
active, we aim to make sport and activity a part of their daily
routine from an early age. As well as being a fun part of
each day, sport provides children with other development
opportunities:
Social skills. Research shows that children who participate
in organised sports learn confidence, teamwork and
leadership. Eighty one percent of female business
executives played team sports as girls.
Improved brain function. Exercise increases the flow of
blood to the brain. The blood delivers oxygen and glucose,
which the brain needs for heightened alertness and mental
focus. Because of this, exercise makes it easier for children
to learn.
Fine and Gross motor development. Gross motor skills
involve large-body movements. With practice, children can
build speed, balance, endurance, and the more
sophisticated levels of coordination necessary to master
new physical activities, such as bicycle riding, roller skating,
dancing, swimming, swinging on a jungle gym, and team
sports.
These gross motor skills in turn support the development of
fine-motor skills that require hand-eye coordination and
other smaller hand skills such as drawing, writing and
cutting.
