The Cowboy Legend : The American cowboy is known all over the world, yet he
only rode the West for a few years late in 19th century. Why have so many stories,
movies, and television shows been mad about cowboys? Do other countries have
heroes from their history that are still popular today? (Consider the samurai of Japan,
or England’s pirates.) Why are cowboy stories, and other stories of legendary heroes,
filled with violence? Is this why they are so popular, or are there other reasons?
The legends about the cowboy or any heroes in various countries including Samurai
in Japan, Pirate in England, Kung Fu in China or Viking in Europe is well-known over the
world. Legend is the story which told by generations to generation about amazing,
mysterious, supernatural, exciting and even violent stories of people in the past, and some of
them might be not true or exaggerated as they are told by people in order to make listeners
eager to follow the stories. For example, story of cowboy is presented in an action story with
violence even though in the past cowboy had a duty to take care of animals in the farm.
Moreover, to make exaggerated story of heroes is not only to make the listeners
excited to follow the stories, but also to make the story popular. Most legends are brought up
to make many films nowadays, so the legend becomes popular nowadays such as the story of
pirate in Pirate of the Caribbean, the story of samurai in the Last Samurai and etc. In my
opinion, Kung fu is still in China like Shaolin warrior in Shaolin temple, but the other kinds
of heroes are disappeared and can be seen only in the films.
