interacts with
receivers’ stage of change
(“Is this consequence in line
with my current behaviour?”)

of change is,
the more the message

We need a gentle threat!
Greater threat may activate
defensive avoidance and result
in an less message acceptance
(Witte, 1992)
You can threat us to motivate
our attitude change!
Evoking greater sense of threat
only if recipients feel capable of
averting the threat by performing
the recommended action
(Rogers, 1983; Van 't Riet et al., 2011)
In both studies:
Contemplation &
Low self-efficacy
→ gain
Preparation &
High self-efficacy
→ non-loss

Editor's Notes

  1. The present research “Promotin versus Prevention framed messages” is a part of the project FROOD Framing Food, which aims at testing different message frames to promote healthy eating behaviour
  2. After several decades of research on message framing, there is still no clear and consident answer to question of when emphasizing positive or negative outcomes in a persuasive message will be most effective. In our FROOD project We are deepening message framing with use of the digital communication
  3. In our FROOD project we particularly focus on the effects of the prefactual messages which present outcomes as depending upon the realisation of a given antecedent., thus stimulating the thought of hypothetical future scenarios. We apply this formulation to enhance positive attitude, intention and behavior compared to other formulations in the case of the eating behaviours.
  4. In the FROOD project we also consider how receivers’ features interact with the effects of the perfactual messages on emotion cognition and behaviour in relation to the healthy eating. We therefore want to profile receivers on the basis of individual characteristics, such ase baseline intentions, self-efficacy, predominant regulatory focus and so on.
  5. The present contribution is based on the results of two studies, the former aimed at promoting a regular veg intake, the latter aimed at preventing an excessive
  6. - In the Precontemplation stage, people do not intend to take action in the foreseeable future (defined as within the next 6 months). Contemplation - In this stage, people are intending to start the healthy behavior in the foreseeable future (defined as within the next 6 months). People recognize that their behavior may be problematic, and a more thoughtful and practical consideration of the pros and cons of changing the behavior takes place, with equal emphasis placed on both. Even with this recognition, people may still feel ambivalent toward changing their behavior. Preparation (Determination) - In this stage, people are ready to take action within the next 30 days. People start to take small steps toward the behavior change, and they believe changing their behavior can lead to a healthier life. Action - In this stage, people have recently changed their behavior (defined as within the last 6 months) and intend to keep moving forward with that behavior change. People may exhibit this by modifying their problem behavior or acquiring new healthy behaviors. Maintenance - In this stage, people have sustained their behavior change for a while (defined as more than 6 months) and intend to maintain the behavior change going forward. People in this stage work to prevent relapse to earlier stages. Termination - In this stage, people have no desire to return to their unhealthy behaviors and are sure they will not relapse. Since this is rarely reached, and people tend to stay in the maintenance stage, this stage is often not considered in health promotion programs.
  7. the gain-framed message was more persuasive than the loss-framed message, but only when the message was personalised to increase self-relevance. Moreover, the effect was due to a significant drop in persuasion in the loss condition, probably caused by a defensive reaction.
  8. In the main analyses, we tested for differences in the dependent variables (attitude, anticipated regret, future intention) by conditions (gain versus non-loss posts) and participants’ prior intention using MANOVA. Then, we explored univariate effects for the main effects of each dependent variables and their interaction. Appropriate post-hoc tests were used to compare means for different pairs. Results did not show any significant main effect of conditions (F(3,80) = 1.65; p = .18, ηp2 = .06), but showed significant main effect of state both of prior intention (F(6,162) = 7.96; p = .001, ηp2 = .22) and conditions X prior intention interaction (F6,162) = 2.31; p = .03, ηp2 = .08) on dependent variables. Univariates tests showed that the condition was significant only for attitude (F(1,87) = 4.08; p = .05, ηp2 = .05), but not for anticipated regret (F(1,87) = .55; p = .59, ηp2 = .00), and future intention (F(1,87) = 2.74; p = .10, ηp2 = .03). Moreover, univariates tests showed that effect of prior intentions was significant for attitude (F(2,87) = 7.43; p = .001, ηp2 = .15), anticipated regret (F(2,87) = 8.85; p = .001, ηp2 = .18), and intention (F(2,87) = 31.22; p = .001, ηp2 = .43). Finally, univariates tests showed that the condition X prior intention interaction was significant for anticipated regret (F(2,87) = 4.57; p = .01, ηp2 = .10), and future intention (F(2,87) = 2.94; p = .05, ηp2 = .07), but not for attitude (F(2,87) = 2.13; p = .15, ηp2 = .05). Bonferroni post-hoc t-tests showed condition significantly influenced the dependent variables only in the case of the demoralized non-intenders (Table 3 DECIDERE SE INSERIRLA). Results found that demoralized non-intenders reported more positive attitude when reading non-loss posts (M = 2.97, SD = .61), than gain posts (M = 4.79, SD = .45), as well as higher anticipated regret when reading non-loss posts (M = 3.53, SD = .41), than gain posts (M = 1.83, SD = .56). Finally, they reported higher future intention when reading non-loss posts (M = 3.21, SD = .44), than gain posts (M = 1.44, SD = .59).
  9. Three moderation analyses by splitting the sample in non-intenders, want-but-cannot and intenders. future intention predicted by condition and eating self-efficacy, plus the interaction term between predictors. Contemplation: Receivers in the CONTEMPLATION stage with a low eating self-efficacy were more persuader by non-loss than gain posts. No such difference was found in receivers with intermediate or high eating self-efficacy condition had a significant effect on future intention (B = 2.53; 95% CI = .20, .46), while eating self-efficacy had not (B = .79; 95% CI = -.11; 1.70 PREPARATION Receivers in the PREPARATION stage with intermediate or high eating self-efficacy were more persuaded by non-loss than gain posts. No such difference was found in receivers with low eating self-efficacy. The interaction term between condition and eating self-efficacy was indeed found to be a significant predictor of future intention (B = .85; 95% CI = .24; 1.45). ACTION any significant effect for condition (B = -1.41; 95% CI = -.55, 1.15), for eating self-efficacy
  10. INSERIRE CHE PREVENTION = GAIN PROMOTION = ---
  11. We apply the prefactual formulation to the prospect theory. Following this theory, we can frame a persuasive message in terms of gain if we present promote a positive beh to obtain beneficial consequences of a , In terms of Loss if we present risky ourcome of a negative behaviour But we can also present a positive beh as connected to the avoidance of negative outcomes, in the case of non loss Or a negative beh as associated with the loss of a beneficial consequence, in the case of non gain message
  12. People are often unaware that their behavior is problematic or produces negative consequences. People in this stage often underestimate the pros of changing behavior and place too much emphasis on the cons of changing behavior.
  13. Loss message is more effective for participants with high self-efficacy. This is in line with the fact that evoking greater sense of threat might increase persuasiveness, only if recipients feel capable of averting the threat by performing the recommended action(Fear appeal research; Rogers, 1983), In precontemplation non usare gain soprattutto se bassa SE -in contemplation usare loss per low non gain per high - in preparation usare nn gain per low chi è high già lo sta facendo bn - in action no diff in maintenance loss o gain in high
  14. PROFILING RECEIVERS IN BASELINE AND TAILOR SPECIFIC FRAMES
  15. In the CONTEMPLATION stage, people recognize that their behavior may be problematic, and a more thoughtful and practical consideration of the pros and cons of changing the behavior takes place, with equal emphasis placed on both. Our results however shows that this is the case only for receivers with low self-efficac. Those Who have high self-efficacy seems to be more convinced by cons than pro.
