such as cognitive, forensic [ Psychiatry and
Psychology ] social and development
psychology.
 Wilhelm Wundt was the first person ever to
call himself a Psychologist. He is widely
regarded as the “father of experimental
psychology” in 1879.
 Cesare lombroso [1835-1909] an italian
sociologist working in the late 19th century is
often called ‘’the father of criminology or
father of modern criminology.
 There are three broad theoratical models of
criminal behaviour.
[a]- Psychological-lewin [1935] who suggested
psychological theories of crime.
 The study of the views, thought, intention,
action and so many reaction.
[b]-Sociological- sociological theories of
criminology say that society creates
condition under which a person commits a
crime.
[c]-Biological- lombroso’s theory is being
explored in two major areas genetics and
neuroscience.
 Criminal psychologist are often called up as
witness in court cases to help the jury
understand the mind of the criminal.
 criminal psychologist uses her psychology
expertise to evaluate criminals .
 Criminal thinking is generally considered to be
a way of thinking in which the subject finds
the easiest solution to a problem… for
instance.
 Ex. If a person is hungry and has no means of
buying food ‘criminal thinking’ would suggest
said person take food to eat without paying for
it.
 To describe and provide examples of
common criminal thinking errors in the
offender population.
 To help mental health and corrections
practitioners and offends become more aware
of thinking errors and thinking distortions.
 “It is important in understanding who the
criminal is not to confused the victimizer with
the victim.”
 When held accountable criminal often blame
circumstances. And if they don’t come up
with enough excuses for crime on their own,
mental health and other supply more.
 A major part of criminal psychology known as
criminal profiling.
 Criminal profiling ,also known as offender
profiling , is the process of linking an
offender’s action at the crime scene to their
most likely characteristics to help police
investigation narrow down and prioritize a
pool of most likely suspect .
 To Provide…
a. Social and psychological assessment of the
offender.
b. Psychological evaluation of belongings
possessed by the offender.
c. Interviewing suggestions and strategies.
◦ Criminal psychologist may also consider the
following question. ?
◦ Is a mental disorder present now .was it present
during the time of the crime. ?
◦ What is the level of responsibility of the offender
for the crime. ?
◦ What is the risk of reoffending and which risk
factors are involved. ?
◦ Is treatment possible to reduce the risk of
reoffending. ?
