People With A Personality Disorder
Psychopaths are people with a personality disorder and this condition may be confused with
antisocialism. According to the article What Is a Psychopath? The term "psychopath" was first
applied to these people around 1900. The term was changed to "sociopath" in the 1930s to
emphasize the damage they do to society. Currently researchers have returned to using the term
"psychopath." There are several characteristics that tell whether a person is a psychopath or not. Not
caring for others is one of them; the person does not feel emotions for others. Similarly, they tend to
show a lack of emotion, such as guilt, shame and fear. Also, it is very notable their insincere speech,
and that is very close to lying. Moreover, they are overconfident and selfish. Although they are so
focused on themselves they tend to fail in any plan in their lives. Violence is what have me worrying
about them since they can become serial killers. In my opinion, psychopaths are not useful in society
due to the fact that they do not feel anything for anybody. People do not know when they are
planning something awful such as robbing a bank, assaulting people or killing someone. On the
other hand, they can be the best lawyers as they are smarts and great liars. Therefore, if they lie in
front of a judge their facial features would not change. On one hand, psychopaths could be a
problem for society. The lack of feelings is the main reason I think they could not be useful. A

Psychopathy and Antisocial Personality Disorder Essay
Introduction The purpose of this study is to compare and contrast the constructs of psychopathy and
antisocial personality disorder. The aim is to highlight whether the terms psychopathy and antisocial
personality disorder reflect the same construct or whether they differ. Furthermore,
recommendations for treatment of criminal behavior will be explored. For the purposes of this
evaluation some definitions need to be highlighted: Criminal offence is an act that breaks a law,
which relates how to behave in society. The harm caused by the act is seen to be against society as a
whole, not just a specific person. Sometimes it refers to the specific law that was broken (Herring,
2009). Crime is the breach of rules or law for which some authority ... Show more content on

Furthermore, psychopathy was considered during the twentieth century, the most widely used term
to describe antisocial behavior (Reed, 1996). In the 1980s, the committee who devised the
Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for the American Psychiatric Association recommended the term
antisocial personality syndrome to be changed to antisocial personality disorder (Ellis & Walsh,
2000). Antisocial Personality Disorder Hare & McPherson (1984), were successful in pushing the
idea that there is a significant correspondence between violent and persistent delinquent and
criminal histories and antisocial personality disorder diagnosis. Acute persistent child conduct
disorder behavior symptoms, also known as conduct disorder, have been directly linked to serious
criminality and antisocial personality disorder (Ellis & Walsh, 2000). Although criminality and
antisocial personality disorder ought not be equated, they should be seen as closely linked
behavioral phenomena (Ellis & Walsh, 2000). Vitella (1996) believes that individuals with
childhood conduct disorder have a higher than normal probability of being both criminal and
diagnosed antisocial personality disorder in adolescence and adulthood, and persons with serious
criminal records have a higher probability of being diagnosed psychopathic than those with little or
no criminal history. Nevertheless, Ellis & Walsh (2000) in caution pointed out that these

Psychopathy Is a Necessary Study for the Criminal System...
Psychopathy, in both the mental health and criminal justice systems, has emerged as one of the most
important clinical constructs of the 21st century (Hare, Clark, Grann, & Thornton, 2000, p. 623).
Where clinically, psychopathy is traditionally described as a combination of inferred socially
deviant behaviors and personality traits. Some traits and behaviors a psychopath is seen to possess
are commonly known, for example, to being impulsive, selfish, aggressive, lacking remorse, shame,
feeling for others, pathologically lying, and having asocial or antisocial behaviors (Hare, &
Neumann, 2006, p. 59–60). One of the reasons as to why psychopathy has come to see an increase

58). The 20 traits and behaviors that are assessed in the PCL–R are conning/manipulative, grandiose
sense of self– worth, glibness/superficial charm, lack of remorse or guilt, lack of realistic, long–term
goals, shallow affect, impulsivity, irresponsibility, pathological lying. As well as, failure to accept
responsibility for ones own actions, revocation of conditional release, criminal versatility, parasitic
life style, callous/lack of empathy, poor behavior controls, promiscuous sexual relations, early
behavior problems, many short–term marital relationships, juvenile delinquency, and a need for
stimulation/prone to boredom (Hare et al., 2006 p. 63).
Therefore, as a strength of the PCL–R system, unlike APD, an antisocial lifestyle is only part of the
diagnostic criteria for psychopathy (Fine, & Kennett, 2004, p. 425). Where as psychometric analysis
of the PCL–R consistently identifies two factors. One of the factors corresponds to personality
features, such as lacking guilt or remorse, or a lack of empathy, while the other looks into features of
antisocial lifestyles, such as impulsivity or poor behaviour controls (Fine & Kennett, 2004, p. 425).
The PCL–R gives individuals that are being assessed in these traits and behaviors a score from a 3–
point scale (0,1, 2) (Hare et al., 2006, p. 59). Where 0 indicates that the characteristic being assessed
was definitely not present or did not apply, 1 stating that there

Psychopaths: A Case Study
The word "psychopath" may call to mind the sadistic Hollywood cannibal Hannibal Lector or the
infamous serial killer from the 1970s Ted Bundy. This perception of psychopathy is accurate but
incomplete. Psychopaths are significantly more likely to make contact with the criminal justice
system and their crimes also tend to be more violent than those of other criminals (Carré et al.,
2013). Psychopaths are found to be responsible for approximately 50% of serious crimes and make
up about 20% of North American prisons (Hare, 1999). Psychopaths are notorious for being among
society's most dangerous individuals; however, this category not only refers to the ruthless serial
killers, sex–offenders, and stereotypical convicts. In reality, most psychopaths are not criminals. In
fact, most psychopaths possess a superficial charm that makes them rather appealing. This paper
will focus less on the extreme, criminalized psychopath and more on those whom we might
unknowingly encounter in everyday life. After exploring the diagnostic criteria for psychopaths and
how the qualities associated with psychopathy tend to be favored in the workplace, this paper will
examine how the disorder poses ethical problems for corporations and how society is dealing with
the issue. Before exploring the callous world of the psychopath, the distinction between
psychopathy and sociopathy must be addressed. While these two terms are frequently used
interchangeably, they are not identical diagnoses.

Similarities And Similarities Between A Psychopath And...
Taking after on around 40 years of empirical research, the PCL–R, has developed a perfect
instrument for the evaluation of this phenomenon. Scoring criteria rate each of 20 things on a 3–
point scale (0, 1, 2) as per the degree that it applies to a given person. This test takes into
consideration a greatest score of 40; a score of 30 assigns somebody as a psychopath. The normal
non–psychopath will score around 5 or 6 on this test. Comfortable or business–psychopaths likely
will score in the center 20s–and sexually immoral psychopaths tend to score higher. There are many
similarities between a psychopath and politician. A politician is a psychopath with a gift that brings
an informed and developed vocabulary that never ends. Not even when the psychopath is caught in a
lie, he begins to act worried. Nonetheless he confuses the person who integrated him with his
vocabulary and body language. Just like a psychopath, a skilled politician to charm and manipulate
their audience, especially if you target the right audience, such as Donald Trump directed against the
Republicans for this year's presidential election in the United States. Now that we have addressed

Columbine, By Dave Cullen
Although it is not obvious in modern society, psychopaths may survive and thrive within the
population. Psychopaths are typically represented as stark outliers that rarely exist outside of mental
institutions, but this is not always the case. In Columbine, by Dave Cullen, Cullen investigates the
psychological state of Eric Harris, the mastermind behind the Columbine massacre that occurred on
April 20, 1999. Through his extensive definition of psychopathy, Cullen elaborates on the reasons
that led Eric to murder many of his peers, and to explain how his psychopathic nature helped him
accomplish his mission. Psychopaths are typically devoid of emotion, and have an inherent sense of
superiority that drives them to take actions that society considers ... Show more content on

In order to more accurately define psychopathy, Cullen calls upon Dr. Robert Hare. He is "the
leading authority on psychopaths," and writes that psychopaths can "torture and mutilate their
victims with about the same sense of concern that we feel when we carve a turkey for Thanksgiving
dinner" (239). By referring to the work of Dr. Hare, Cullen simultaneously builds his ethos while
also illustrating the psychological state of the killer. Eric, along with other psychopaths, exhibited
two defining characteristics: "a ruthless disregard for others," and "an astonishing gift for disguising
the first" (240). A non–psychopath is rarely able to kill so indiscriminately, due to the emotional
burden it leaves on the killer. However, Eric cannot empathize with other human beings, and does
not feel pain or conflict when killing. In addition, his exceptional aptitude for deception allowed him
to manipulate Robyn Anderson to buy the guns for him, under the pretense that he wanted to go
hunting. It also enabled him to lie extensively to his parents about the true nature of the bombs he
had in his possession. Cullen explained psychopathy and its key components in order to explain how
Eric was able to commit such a

Insanity In Hamlet
Insanity is a thing which can be easily faked. A person could go into the streets, shriek wildly, say
nonsense phrases, pick fights with strangers, and eventually the cops will be called on a report of
some lunatic making a ruckus. Faking insanity for your own benefit, however, is harder to do
successfully without any unintended consequences. Take for example Shakespeare's "Hamlet", a
play with the central theme of fabricated insanity for revenge purposes. Hamlet's revenge scheme
about faking his own insanity to eventually get close enough to murder his murderer uncle in a way
to send him into the darkest depths of hell never to have mercy upon him ever again doesn't go as he
would have liked it to go, ending up with a death count of unforeseen proportions which, not
according to plan, included himself. The actual faking of insanity, however, was brilliantly done by
Hamlet, fooling everyone, including the audience at some points, into thinking he had actually lost
some, if not all, of his marbles. This level of expressed lunacy from our dear Hamlet has let some
conclude that he is truly mad. A group on the other side of the coin, however, has not pinned him as
crazy, but instead as a psychopath using his craziness to his advantage. Psychopathy in humans can
be either easy or hard to diagnose, depending on what sources you go to. One of the supposed ways
of singling out a psychopath is to apply them to the Psychopathy Checklist – Revised (PCL–R), a set

Overall, it was, in my opinion, a great reading. I was impressed how I have heard the term
psychopathy, but it is startling how complex this personality disorder is. Of course, as the reading
mentioned, oftentimes psychopaths are portrayed as cold–blooded, serial killers, etc. Indubitably,
this might happen in some cases but the complexity it implies to determine if an individual is a
psychopath is far beyond the reach a non–professional psychologist or psychiatrist. Therefore, this is
the most interesting and surprising aspect of the reading and psychopathy itself, how hard it to
identify a psychopath. In addition, the ways it is presented to people, not only by their personality
traits and behavior but their ability to appear as charming ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This misinterpretation, whether at work, family, or friends may cause several consequences, the
main one affecting that person psychologically and damaging his personality. I personally have not
been in a situation or known someone with such personality, or better say, I didn't notice it because
of I didn't have the knowledge or the information I have obtained after reading this textbook about
psychopathy. From now on, I am sure that I will pay more attention to the personality of the people I
interact with. I think that although it is difficult if I were to be in a situation where someone I know
with such personality, more than tempting to label that person as a psychopath, it would be
intimidating to know or suppose with great certainty that you know a psychopath. Certainly, there
are many psychopaths out there and/or people that would score higher on the PCL–R. Whether it's
in the workplace, the abusive, controlling, threatening, deceitful, and aggressive behavior of
psychopaths are harmful to the family and in a professional relationship. So, this brings me to the
last question whether a psychopath must be kept in prison. I believe that if some individual is

Book Report: Without Conscience: The disturbing world of psychopaths among us.
This book "Without Conscience" comes from a man who has dedicated his life to study
of psychopaths. He basically invented the measurement for determining psychopathy. We are
introduced to the psychopath as an individual, a person who has no conscience or remorse, has
the ability to manipulate anyone or anything for their personal gain, and does not experience the
social world as a normal, empathetic individual. Prior to his work there were not a lot oresources
available to identify psychopaths. Hare found that the many different personality tests available
were unreliable so Hare developed and introduces in this book the Psychopathy ... Show more

Hare uses his experiences with Ray other psychopaths, and information he gathered
from interviews with serial killers to explain to his audience what psychopaths are like and how
they operate.
Hare breaks down the Checklist into the following categories: Emotional/Interpersonal
(superficial, egocentric and grandiose, having a lack of remorse or guilt, deceitful and
manipulative, no apparent emotions), and Social Deviance (impulsive, bad behavior,
lack of or inability to take responsibility, early behavior problems, and adult antisocial behavior).
He makes it very clear that one must be experienced and properly trained to use the checklist
correctly. Hare cites evidence in the book that a psychopaths brain functions differently from that
of a "normal" persons. "Neither side of the [psychopath's brain] is typical in the processes of
emotions."[1] Although a psychopaths brain function is still unknown, Hare believed that they
were born that way and not created by their social environment and there is nothing that can be
done to treat or cure them.
While Hare knew people would feel helpless, and like they could do

Psychopathy
"Psychopathy is a personality disorder characterized by an inability to form human attachment,
aggressive narcissism, and antisocial behavior defined by a constellation of affective, interpersonal
and behavioral characteristics, most of which society views as pejorative" [1]. Some of these
characteristics include irresponsibility, grandiosity, cunning, deceitfulness, selective impulsivity,
sexual promiscuity, lack of empathy, etc. People who are psychopathic display not only antisocial
behavior but also emotional impairment such as the lack of guilt. They are able to prey on others

Due to its primary role in processing memory and emotional reactions, over the last decade and a
half psychologists have been linking the amygdala to psychopathy. It is involved in aversive
conditioning and instrumental learning and is thus involved in all the processes that, when impaired,
produce the same functional impairments displayed by psychopaths. Two famous studies conducted
by Tiihonen and Kiehl respectively have confirmed this. Tiihonen used a volumetric MRI to test and
confirm the positive correlation between low amygdaloid volume and a high degree of psychopathy
in violent criminals (measured by the Hare checklist–revised) while Kiehl used a functional MRI to
prove reduced amygdala response during an emotional memory task in individuals who scored high
on the Hare checklist–revised. However, both these studies along with numerous others were
conducted using violent offenders as subjects rather than individuals with psychopathy. Although
many psychopaths do exhibit violent tendencies, not all violent offenders are necessarily
psychopaths. A study conducted by Raine is one of the few that did focus only on individuals
exhibiting psychopathy. In his study Raine was able to show reduced prefrontal grey matter in his
test subjects. Unfortunately though, he was unable to differentiate between grey matter in different
regions of the prefrontal cortex. It is however clear that there is one region of the frontal cortex that

43(2), 148–168. DOI: 10.1177/0022427805280053 The researchers conducted a cost–benefit
analysis of two different treatments for juvenile delinquents to determine the economic value of
intervention strategies, investigating the effectiveness of the Mendota Juvenile Treatment Center,
which is based on the "Decompression" treatment model as well as Aggression Replacement
Training. It is more cost effective to employ treatment based services instead of "harsher or more
security–focused sanctions" for youth offenders. Such treatments also lessened the likelihood of
reoffending, which supports the increased use of intervention strategies. The article offers a
compelling argument for the treatment of juvenile offenders, approaching the subject with a
perspective centered in economics. Since state tax revenues are used to detain criminals, this
investment can be better spent on rehabilitative treatments, as it will save the state money in the
future by decreasing recidivism. Therefore, this study supports other research in echoing the
potential of rehabilitative measures to aid juveniles. Ermer, E., Cope, L. M., Nyalakanti, P. K.,

Who Is Tom Watson A Psychopath?
The Girl on the Train, directed by Tate Taylor and based off of Paula Hawkins' novel, is all about
how people are as they seem and even those that seem as if their life is perfectly put together, it's far
from it. This movie does agree and fit into the crime and mystery genres, but it is important to note
that this movie does also fit into the psychological thriller genre. The Girl on the Train shows
multiple ways of how Tom Watson has signs of being a psychopath. This movie should be classified
as a psychological thriller because Rachel endures emotional abuse, as well as the physical abuse,
Tom is a pathological liar, and a psychopathic killer.
The Girl on the Train is about a woman named Rachel Watson, who rides the train every day and
she passes by a house that is home to the perfect couple in her mind. Rachel feels as if she knows
the couple, Scott and Megan Hipwell.. Rachel dreams having the perfect relationship, considering
her previous marriage had ended because her ex husband, Tom Watson, cheated on her. Rachel is
severely depressed due to the divorce and cheating incident. Rachel envies Tom's new wife, Anna
Watson, because she was able to bear Tom's child. One night Megan goes missing, Rachel cannot
believe that Megan is gone and she wants to find out what happened. It just so happens that Rachel
was seen the night that Megan went missing. There was a whole situation on how Rachel was drunk

Hare Checklist Case Study
There are advantages to the Hare Checklist, specifically identification of the checklist as one of the
most reliable tests at detecting psychopathy, if used by trained, professional personnel (Hare, 1990).
The checklist is extensive in the identification of psychopathy, containing a 20 items long list as
well as an interview and a review of past records and behaviors (Hare, 1990). The benefits of the
checklist include determining the most effective care for an individual diagnosed as a psychopath,
and responsibility for identifying possible psychopaths in prisons and other institutions who may
become repeat offenders of violent crime (Hare, 1990). The checklist is able to predict, in some
cases, the probability of another violent behavior occurring (Hare, 1990). ... Show more content on

of Tony, a gentleman who faked insanity in order to avoid prison, he was kept in a mental institution
for twelve years based off of a misdiagnosis of psychopathy identified by characteristics and
behaviors he apparently exhibited on the Hare Checklist (Ronson, 2011). The psychiatrist that
oversaw him was able to twist every action Tony made or every word he spoke into a further
indication of his "psychopathy" (Ronson, 2011). Tony did not want to spend time around the other
patients, which was construed as grandiosity and lack of empathy on the checklist, to name one

Why Psychopaths Are Serial Killers
Imagine being free of the mental chains called a conscience. Unpleasant feelings such as guilt or
regret would no longer be able to be felt. Theoretically, this would sound preferable, but in actuality
a conscience is what makes us truly human, and without it we would not have any compassion or
empathy for others. This is why conscienceless people, psychopaths, are such a threat to society;
they care only for themselves and will not hesitate to harm anyone if it means they achieve a certain
goal. It is a proven fact that, much like how all squares are rectangles but not all rectangles are
squares, all serial killers are psychopaths but not all psychopaths are serial killers. Therefore, I
decided that the book best suited for me to learn ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Serial killers' unavailability of remorse or guilt is linked with their "lack of a conscience that gives
them the remarkable ability to rationalize their behavior and to shrug off personal responsibility for
actions that cause shock and disappointment to family, friends, or associates" (42). Due to the
absence of that little voice present in most people's minds, serial killers are like robots in view of the
fact that they are unemotional and indifferent about the lives of others. They can, and do, ruthlessly
slay people just as easily and with no feeling as I can crunch an irritating bug beneath my shoe.
Nevertheless, we must one day prevail in discovering a way to tame these so far untransformable,
merciless psychopaths so society can better function without the disruption of occasional unchecked

significantly plausible benefits. Psychopathy has long been labeled a personality disorder; a disorder
believed to be serious enough of a threat to society to be treated using methods of sedation,
incarceration, and climaxing at lobotomization. But could the worry have been that these
psychopaths would just become too successful? The following analyzed documents support the

Two forms of balancing selection are heterogeneity in fitness optima and frequency dependent
selection. The researchers conducted a study to find if the benefits of psychopathic traits outweigh
the costs. It seems as though they do, which is why psychopathy still exists. The promiscuous sexual
behavior, coercion, superficial charm, fearlessness and deception with lack of empathy all greatly
lead to benefits in resource and mate acquisition. Of course if everyone possessed these traits,
natural selection would probably select for the most exaggerated forms of these behaviors, just
creating more intense psychopaths. The majority of a psychopath's traits enable him/her to have an
advantage over the normal person in society when obtaining mates and resources. Also, since they
feel little remorse and empathy, they can pursue goals using logical reasoning without letting
emotions deter them, ultimately resulting in more success. Not only do they increase their
reproductive value, they also know how to emulate emotions, making them more desirable to
acquire even more resources. This only then raises the question, why aren't their traits becoming
more prominent? This question was answered in their research with the proposition that the more

According to the Public Safety Canada, in the year of 2015 there were over 500 offenders who
received special designations and who were serving an indeterminate sentence, twenty–one
offenders were serving both a life sentence and an indeterminate sentence. More than 95 percent of
dangerous offenders were held in custody, while close to four percent of dangerous offenders were

dangerous sexual offenders remained in custody while three Habitual Offenders were released back

overburdened criminal justice system, but also to the society at large as the risk to re–offend may
exist. By working as a Crisis Counsellor for a large non–profit crisis response organization, I had an

Criminal Psychopathy Essay
There has been a myriad of research into psychopathy as it relates to the ordinary, violent criminal,
yet little research exists into psychopathy of the non–violent, corporate criminal. We will examine
whether there are truly differences in the psychopathy of these offenders in comparison to the
average street level criminal, or whether the distinctions purely driven by our own need to justify the
actions of well–educated, seemingly respectable members of society. We will examine the nature of
corporate crime, the classification and identification of psychopathy, and how it applies to corporate
criminals, uncovering the differences between their psychopathy and that of the ordinary criminal.

Despite these differences, Hare surmises that "there are certainly more people in the business world

The World Of A Psychopath
Marie Bailey Professor Chalyy Composition 1 November 9, 2015 The World of a Psychopath
Imagine a world with no emotion, no feeling, and no remorse; A world where love, happiness, and
hurt was non existent. Welcome to the world of a psychopath. Although scientist do not classify
psychopathy as a mental illness, a psychopath is defined as a person suffering from a chronic mental
disorder with abnormal violent of social behavior (Psychopath). Psychopaths are human beings just
like everyone else except they lack the one thing that makes life worth living: feelings. They do not
have ability to show empathy and remorse towards others. Psychopaths are commonly mistaken for
sociopaths. While sociopaths have a conscience but tend to disregard it, psychopaths on the other
hand do not have a conscience. In other words, sociopaths choose to be the way they are while
psychopaths do not have control over the way they are. Psychologist's have begun to take a deeper
look into the lives of imprisoned psychopaths to determine who they are, both their biological and
psychological roots, their patterns, and possible treatments. When you ask someone to think of a
psychopath, it is almost first instinct to think of a murderer or a serial killer. Although there are
thousands that are indeed murders, not all psychopaths are. It is estimated that one in every one
hundred people in the United States are psychopathic and make up only one percent of the entire
United States population.

Research on Psychopathy: A Personal Disorder Essay
Psychopathy is an extremely complex subcategory of a specific personality disorder. This disorder
has been researched since approximately the 18th century. Modern technology in science can detect
psychopathy by examining the human brain using different techniques. This technology can and
should be used to prevent violence in the world today. Research of the brain abnormalities in
psychopaths have been traced back to the 1800's when an Italian psychiatrist and criminologist
Cesare Lombroso stated that all of the mental functions in one's brain are localized in different parts
of the brain. Lombroso generalized the idea that one is born with a "criminal mind". The criminal
mind can be classified by "deformations of their skulls". (Weber ... Show more content on

Moving forward into the 20th century, Hervey Cleckley made a contribution to the knowledge and
research of the psychopathic brain. He wrote a book called, "The Mask of Sanity" (1976) where he
described psychopathy as a configuration of interpersonal and behavioral features. He found that not
only do psychopaths contain an antisocial behavior, they also have many negative characterizations
and traits such as being manipulative, fearless, impulsive and lacking empathy as well as remorse or
guilt. He also found that psychopathy is not only in those who show criminal behavior, however
psychopathy may be present in those who appear to be successful and socially fit individuals.
Furthering the studies of psychopathy, there are two main theories that have been used to explain
this abnormalities in the brain. The first theory is called the Somatic Marker Hypothesis of Damasio
(1994) which proposed that damage to the prefrontal cortex in the brain causes poor decision
making abilities which shows a lack of potential development for the somatic aspects that are linked
to the excitement of rewards and/or punishment. This leads to an inconsiderate attitude towards any
negative consequences as well as social rules or outcomes. This theory is supported by its
neurobiological equivalent which is the orbitofrontal and medial frontal cortex in the brain which is
responsible for decision making and other cognitive processes. Neuropsychological evidence proves
that the Somatic

Antisocial Personality Disorder Research Paper
Antisocial behavior is a problem that arises from the combination of several factors among which
the behaviors at school, drug use, alcoholism, antisocial relationships with peers, emotional
disorders, abuse, and family problems among other situations make the individuals vulnerable to
develop it (Jaffee, Strait & Odgers, 2012). There is a number of literature that suggest that antisocial
personality disorder is highly associated with psychopathy. In order to understand antisocial
personality disorder, we first need to understand what it entails. This research paper will discuss the
different aspects involved in antisocial personality disorder also known as (ASPD). The categories

The Disturbing World Of Psychopath: Summary
Robert D. Hare PhD is one of the leading experts in the world on psychopathy. In 1993, Hare wrote
a book titled "Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of Psychopaths Among Us." The book
surrounds around the world of violent and non–violent psychopaths. With nearly two million
psychopaths in North America, the prevalence for this illness is higher than one would expect. The
overall purpose of Hare's novel is to bring awareness about the truths surrounding psychopathy, the
chilling future this illness poses and how society can reduce their risk of being targeted by a
psychopath. These three questions lead the discussion–based book to a cohesive understanding and
theorization of psychopathy (Hare, 1993). Hare begins the novel by giving a few horrific examples
of psychopathy in action. One story in particular that was significantly disturbing was one about a
man who murdered his girlfriend's infant child by picking it ... Show more content on

There has been a significant amount of research that backs up the emotional component of
psychopaths that Hare described in the book (Palermo, 2012). There is also evidence to show that
there needs to be a more cohesive and competent way to diagnose psychopathy and to handle them
in the prison system specifically. However, this might not be the most pertinent part to the studies of
psychopaths. Hare mentions one of his limitations on his work within this field is that he has the
most access to violent psychopaths. It is easy to be able to communicate with prisoners if you are
working in a prison. However, it much more difficult to access and pick the minds of a psychopath
in the real world, away from the penitentiary system. Since we have learned throughout the book
that there are psychopaths who can still be members of society without committing violent acts, this
is an imperative sector of the psychopath community that needs more

The Psychopathy Checklist Revised Essay
The PCL–R is a tool that enables a distinct group of psychologically abnormal offenders to be
measured using a three point rating scale for twenty–two consistent behavioural characteristics.
These characteristics have been underlying themes in an ongoing debate between psychiatrists on
the definition and existence of psychopaths in discourse. While the literature takes no determinative
stance, the psychopath has nonetheless become a distinct group in the binding legislation of the
1913 mental health Act. The PCL–R goes a step further than the act does to identify this group by
not only suggesting that the "psychopath" is a statistically relevant group of criminals but Hare takes
an objective approach that eliminates any likelihood of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Factor 4 has to do with the early appearance of chronic antisocial behaviour. The following fall
under this category: previous diagnosis as a psychopath or similar disorder, early behavioural
problems, juvenile delinquency, and short–tempered/poor behavioural control. The last factor
reflects impulsive and inadequately motivated criminal acts. Acts such as poor probation or parole
risk, many types of offences, and pathological lying and deception are grouped in Factor 5. All
twenty–two factors in Hare's checklist are said to be observable in one percent of the population.
Accordingly, there exists a small group of people who exhibit most–to–all of these specific and
peculiar characteristics and behaviours. This particular group of predators presents numerous
challenges to morality, safety and policy. For instance, because a "psychopath" may display a
general coldness toward others, they are more likely to commit criminal acts, and afterward not
respond to punishment or deterrent tactics. Hare's psychopathy checklist when used as a tool to
identify psychopaths prevents harmful exposure of non–psychopaths to this dangerous group of
offenders. For this tool to work effectively there must not be significant overlap of the specific
characteristics used in the PCL–R to identify psychopaths as in the general population of non–
psychopaths. In other words, the psychopath must

Abstract
The current study examined the relationship between Primary psychopathy, secondary psychopathy
and cognitive empathy in 452 undergraduate students at Victoria University of Wellington. The
Levenson Self–report Psychopathy Scale (LSRP; Levenson, Kiehl, & Fitzpatrick, 1995), and the
"Reading the Mind in the Eyes" test revised (RMET; Baron–Cohen, Wheelwright, Hill, Raste &
Plumb, 2001) were used to assess the subcategories of psychopathy and empathy. The results were
that primary psychopathy and cognitive empathy are significantly, weakly, negatively related, but
that secondary psychopathy and cognitive empathy are not correlated.
Are Primary and Secondary Psychopathy Associated with Cognitive Empathy? Psychopathy is a
disorder characterised by callousness, diminished capacity for remorse, superficial charm, and poor
behavioural controls (Richell et al., 2003). Psychopathy has two subcategories, primary psychopathy
and secondary psychopathy, both types are associated with hostility, impulsivity and aggression but
secondary, unlike primary, is associated also with social anxiety, introversion, moodiness and low
self–esteem (Blackburn & Fawcett, 1999, as cited in Ali & Chamorro–Premuzic, 2010). Cognitive

Psychopath Essay
What is a psychopath?
Psychopathy is usually defined as a personality disorder characterized by antisocial behaviour, lack
of empathy and remorse and bold superficial behaviour. A checklist developed by Dr Bob Hare
identifies the key traits of a psychopath which is used universally to identify psychopaths. The main
features of psychopaths include:
Superficial charm
Grandiose sense of self worth
Pathological lying
Cunning/manipulative
Lack of remorse/guilt
Emotionally shallow
Callous/lack of empathy
Failure to accept responsibility for own actions
Lack of realistic long–term goals
Impulsivity
Introduction
Upon deciding what sentences to give to criminal psychopaths, we must consider multiple factors.
Firstly I will discuss the issues with the classification and diagnosis of psychopathy, the importance
being that if the wrong diagnosis is given it could cause a problem with criminal judgements. The
management and treatment of psychopaths must also be examined, exploring their reactions and
responses to different types of environments and treatments and significantly their likelihood of
reoffending if released. Finally it must be decided whether psychopaths should be held criminally
responsible for their actions (and therefore sentenced to prison) or be entitled to the insanity defence
and be sent to a psychiatric hospital to be treated, where the psychopath would usually spend longer
time than if they were sentenced to prison. If a psychopath is guilty of

Explain How Is Iago A Sociopath
Raya Tarawneh
5/3/16
Is Iago a Sociopath? One of Shakespeare's most acclaimed works, Othello, delves into a wide range
of themes. The play tackles issues of race, gender and encompasses ideas of jealousy and deceit.
Shakespeare also brings to life a variety of well–constructed characters. Iago, the deceitful
antagonist, can easily be identified as the liveliest and most complex character in the play. His
devious nature raises the question of whether or not he is a sociopath. Sociopathy is a mental
disorder in which an individual's moral depravity poses a threat to society. The Psychopathy
Checklist, commonly known as the PCL, constructed a list of criteria used to diagnose sociopaths.
These criteria vary from irresponsibility ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The PCL refers to sociopaths as having "superficial charm" and "glibness", both of which Iago
possesses. When asked by Othello to recap the events of the quarrel, Iago says "I had rather have
this tongue cut from my mouth/ Then it should do offence to Michael Cassio" (2.3.205–206). In
saying so, Iago comes off to Othello as both honest and loyal, most definitely charming him and
covering up the fact that it was Iago himself who intentionally set up the quarrel in order to become
lieutenant. In document A, "conning others for personal profit or pleasure" is said to be usual of
sociopaths. This is easily applicable to Iago's character, who for the sake of becoming lieutenant and
destroying Othello, manages to deceive several characters in the play and ends up being the cause of
Roderigo, Desdemona, Emilia and Othello's deaths. Once again, placing Iago and Ani Korban side
by side affirms Iago's sociopathy. Ani Korban praises his psychiatrist by referring to him/her as "one
of the most astute and erudite persons he has ever met". Immediately after saying so, Korban
requests a favor: to have access to a payphone. Evidently, he also has the ability to charm others
and, similar to Iago, uses this superficial charm for his own personal

How Do Sociopaths Think?
How Do Sociopaths Think? Fernanda Sbordone ENG210 Mr. Elizabeth Ramirez March 14,2017
How Do Sociopaths Think? Sociopaths are not easily identified. In fact, it can be extremely difficult
to determine if someone is a sociopath. Even experts are easily fooled, and many psychotherapists
have a poor understanding of personality disorders in general. In addition, some people exhibit more
sociopathic traits than others, which is why sociopathy lies on a spectrum. Some sociopathic people
are very obviously egotistical, others are much more covert in their narcissism. That is just one
example of the differences ('Sutker,' 2004). Therefore, several ... Show more content on

However, any rages they display are surprisingly short–lived. Because of this defect, sociopaths are
unable to truly connect with other people. They are unable to have true empathy for others, they are
incapable of compassion, and they do not suffer, because they cannot relate to emotional pain. They
live a life devoid of true pleasure, unable to enjoy a sunset or the company of an animal or another
person('Psychiatry,'1997). They only get temporary, meaningless thrills out of things like sex or food
or misleading and manipulating others. Most threateningly, this emotional deficiency means that
they are unable to love. It also means that they must spend their entire lives watching others and
learning to imitate behave. The boredom is almost painful for them, and they will do anything to
alleviate it. This contributes to their tendency to act impulsively and recklessly; for instance, it is
very common for psychopaths to become addicted to alcohol, sex, and drugs. And ultimately, they
will do anything and everything to get rid of their boredom because, having no conscience and no
empathy, they do not care who gets hurt in the process. Or that they are unable to engage in
naturally; in this way, they become demented chameleons. Sociopaths view everything in life
including relationships as games to be won Sociopaths have an insatiable need to win. This desire to
win is so strong that they sometimes will take

Grigory Pechorin: The Superfluous Man
Mikhail Lermontov's protagonist, Grigory Pechorin, belongs to that group of literary characters
known individually as the 'superfluous man.'; Generally an intelligent, educated individual, the
superfluous man would appear to be one who has been either unjustly treated or outcast by society
in general. The superfluous man attempts to find a place for himself in the world, but perhaps due to
the combination of his talents, upbringing, personality and intelligence, continually finds himself on
the outs with his peers.
If the above definition is accepted as valid, then Pechorin might appear to be the consummate
superfluous man. From the outpouring of his tale of woe to Princess Mary, we may come to the ...

It would not even require major personality shifts, but rather a loosing of certain inhibitions, along
with a different application of self–monitoring.
Pechorin claims that he does not enjoy bringing misery to others, and that when he does, he feels
just as miserable. I do not hold the belief that a person is incapable of changing – with
the exception of a certain type of person – and those who refuse to make the necessary
changes are little better then a coward who runs from an engagement with the enemy. It is not
logical behavior to inflict misery upon oneself, without that misery being in the service of a higher
ideal, and even then, it still runs contrary to the natural instinct for survival. The fact that a very
substantial portion of the populace engages in this very sort of illogical behavior does not constitute
a defense for Pechorin, nor does it make the behavior reasoned and logical.
The other sort of person, the sort that is incapable of changing, are the insane. Generally, they are
not a concern, as once they are identified as such, they are usually dealt with, these days by either
medication or institutionalization. In general, most are incapable of fitting into society at large. One

Future Psychopathic Offenders
With these doubts to using the causes of psychopathy to identify future psychopathic offenders,
there are ways in which the legal system, including psychologists, therapists, and courts, can better
determine the likelihood of a future psychopathic offender and how to care for them. Looking back
at the histories of adult psychopaths, they "consistently committed more violent and non–violent
crimes" from their "adolescence to their late 40s" (Birt et al. 647). When working backwards and
looking within the large number of youths that have psychopathic tendencies, one understands from
the evidence that some will continue to commit crimes as they grow up into adulthood. A way to
narrow down which children will become repeating offenders is to

Robert Hare Without Conscience Summary
This non–fictional, eye–opener book, Without Conscience (New York: The Guilford Press, 1993) by
Dr. Robert Hare, is an account of his years as a prison psychologist and everyday life encounters
with psychopaths. The next 25 years he would spend conducting empirical research, which led to the
development of the answer to his question, "What is the psychological makeup that give a
psychopath the power to override reality without compunction?" "Is it nature or nurture?" Dr. Hare's
quest to unravel the true origin of these individuals, he first focused on who they are and their
behaviors. He described, clarified and captivated the personality traits and socially deviant behaviors
of a psychopath. Importantly, this book served as a "guide" in knowing how to protect oneself if

Hare could not definitively conclude that either ones' biological factors or social forces made a
person a psychopath, he rather believed it is an interplay between the both and their ability to make
emotional connection, is greatly reduced (p. 173). He affirmed that psychopaths are difficult if not
impossible to treat, because they themselves believe that they have no psychological or emotional
problems. When Dr. Hare's prison experience was over he continued his profession of psychiatry, he
postulated that a psychopath is not only for prisoners but for all people.
One of my reactions to this book was the Psychopathy Checklist, which Dr. Hare created as a tool
for discovering psychopaths are egocentric and have no feelings of empathy, guilt or remorse. They
view others as potential victims, and they leave a trail of unhappiness behind them in those who
have given in to their deceitful manipulations. Dr. Hare challenges stereotypical beliefs of
psychopaths and reveal who they really are and how he/she presents. He described a psychopath not
by physical appearance, but mostly by their innate

their function processing is slower than that of a person with little to no psychopathic tendencies.
There are various methods to identify psychopaths and forms that psychosis may occur. In the mind,
there is no physical location that can be analyzed by an x–ray, a dissection, or a microscope to

Serial Killers, By Flannery O ' Connor
In this world, there are people who are able to shoot, bludgeon, or torture a whole family and then
sleep peacefully just hours after. Serial Killers have piqued the American public's interest for
generations. In the 1970s, for example, America was enthralled by the danger and fear of Ted Bundy
and John Wayne Gacy, famous serial killers who killed a combined number of over a hundred
people. Following suit of the popularity of serial killers, they have become ingrained in our culture
through art, books, news, talk–shows, and movies. A famous example of this trend is in Flannery
O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard to Find", where the antagonist, The Misfit, brutally murders a
family of six. O'Connor described The Misfit as a calm, polite, analytical, morally–confused,
murderer with leadership skills and "strong white teeth." This archetype, a person who can be
perfectly calm while being aggressive and lacks a sense of right or wrong, has also been an interest
of study in the medical field. The medical community has come together for patients that are
described as lacking a moral conscious, naming their disorder psychopathy (Robinson). In Flannery
O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" The Misfit exhibits signs of psychopathy, shown from
his manipulating control over Bobby Lee and Hiram, and staying calm while he directly and
indirectly kills six people. Psychopaths, although they differ on an individual basis, are described as

Do Sex Offenders Are Classified As Psychopaths?
Many sex offenders are classified as psychopaths. Psychopathy is defined as 'a distinctive cluster of
behaviours and inferred personality traits, most of which society view as pejorative.' (p.4, Hare,
1995). Psychopaths are particularly challenging to work with, let alone treat. The most well known
tool to assess psychopathy is Hare's (2003) Psychopathy Checklist – Revised (PCL–R). The PCL–R
has been used to predict re–offending, however, it seems to be more accurate for violent and general
offenders as opposed to sex offenders (Olver & Wong, 2009). In addition to the PCL–R, there are
two other risk assessment tools which are used to assess the risk of recidivism. These are the

If the offender does not see a need to change, then treatment will not work (Bryan, Casey, Davey &
Day, 2006). Therefore instead of focusing on 'what works', it's important to ask 'what works for who,
and why?' (Harkins, Stephenson & Woodhams, 2013). While a few treatment programs have already
been discussed, there are endless number of treatment programs available. These target problems
such as deficits in empathy, intimacy, problem solving, thinking abilities, self–control and social
skills. To be successful treatment programs must aim to build the capacity of the individual by
targeting internal and external conditions. Internal conditions refers to attitudes, skills and
knowledge of the offender. Whereas external conditions refer to factors such as social support,
employment and education which improve the quality of life (Durrant & Ward, 2011). First and
foremost, for these conditions to change the offender must have the motivation to want to change.
This motivation needs to be married with a positive relationship with the therapist, and a support
network within the group setting. When the offender is part of a group of people with a similar story,
they take on dual roles – one of being a person who is being helped, and the other, being someone
who is a helper. This empowers the offender and assists with motivation to change. By developing

The Theory Of Natural Selection
What does it mean to be human? Is humanity defined by our biology or our morality? Some
combination of the two? Or, is it merely the ability to ask this very question, or ones exceedingly
similar in form? Darwin's The Descent of Man attempts to provide a foundational understanding to
how we all got to where we are, and what our origins might say about our present. In particular, the
way in which evolution is applied to various species, natural selection, is said to dictate which
members of a certain species survive according to their proclivities determined by genetics. A

"to refer to a more serious disorder, linked to genetic traits, producing more dangerous individuals."
(Psychology Today)
Some use the term to include environmental circumstances as contributing to psychopathy, but
generally, psychopaths are said to be differentiated from sociopaths by their ability to function

Who Is The Psychopath?
Psychopath in Disguise If you've ever seen a movie about a psychopathic killer, then you probably
have a vivid stereotype of a psychopath. They usually are portrayed as creepy–looking, antisocial
characters who plan to do unnatural and gruesome things to other people. An example could be
Jason or Michael Myers or even Hannibal Lector from Silence of the Lambs. Unfortunately,
psychopaths are not easy to identify. According to an interview with Martha Stout, an author and
clinical instructor at Harvard, psychopaths are often said to be "the most charming person I ever
met, the sexiest, the most intense. ..." (Monaghan). I am going to argue as ordinary as they may
seem, psychopaths are not normal people. There are many things separating them from a typical
person even if they seem normal. A psychopath can be defined as a person who is mentally unstable
and often prone to hurtful activity toward other people–whether it be hurtful emotionally or
physically
Psychopathy affects the brain. The brain of a psychopath differs from the brain of a normal person.
In Hugues Hervé's book, various experiments were conducted on a control group of men and
psychopathic men. One study conducted the conclusion that psychopathic men had less prefrontal
grey matter than the normal, control group of men. (Hervé) Grey matter in the brain affects
memories, emotions and decision making. This discovery makes sense in terms of the average

Violent behaviors were not associated with all substance dependent diagnoses. The symptom
severity was associated with women dependent on opiates, alcohol, and cocaine. Lewis concluded
that incarcerated women with ASPD and substance dependence, so outweighed the abuse, that there
is not a big enough sample size yet to fully explore the relationship. These findings are also
important for examination of non–incarcerated, and substance–dependent women.

Psychopathy is a condition that lasts a lifetime and typically shows in males. It characteristics start
to show early in a child's life. Some of the traits associated with psychopathy are an inability to

a loss of empathy and safety of other people, a lack of honesty, and an abundant amount of intimate
activity with multiple partners (Harris Skilling Rice, 197–98). The statistics show when it comes to

Misfit Character
The Mustard Seed that Never Sprouted Life is full of twists and turns, also characters that could

it is evident that the type of person played by this character is far from someone who is genuinely

In his analysis of the story titled "One of My Babies," he pointed out various aspects in which the
author disqualified the Grandmother character as the model of moral compass for the Misfit's path to

(Schilb and Clifford 1192) pointing out the way the grandmother utilized the little boy's race to
entertain her grandchildren with "a story in which a watermelon is devoured" by the kid. (Schilb and

intended this to be the one who planted what she called the "mustard–seed." (Schilb and Clifford

betrayed her own character by making it "spiky and vindictive." (Schilb and Clifford 1193) As a
reader I could not agree more with what Brady had to say. If the author wanted to plant the idea of a

People With A Personality Disorder

  • 1. People With A Personality Disorder Psychopaths are people with a personality disorder and this condition may be confused with antisocialism. According to the article What Is a Psychopath? The term "psychopath" was first applied to these people around 1900. The term was changed to "sociopath" in the 1930s to emphasize the damage they do to society. Currently researchers have returned to using the term "psychopath." There are several characteristics that tell whether a person is a psychopath or not. Not caring for others is one of them; the person does not feel emotions for others. Similarly, they tend to show a lack of emotion, such as guilt, shame and fear. Also, it is very notable their insincere speech, and that is very close to lying. Moreover, they are overconfident and selfish. Although they are so focused on themselves they tend to fail in any plan in their lives. Violence is what have me worrying about them since they can become serial killers. In my opinion, psychopaths are not useful in society due to the fact that they do not feel anything for anybody. People do not know when they are planning something awful such as robbing a bank, assaulting people or killing someone. On the other hand, they can be the best lawyers as they are smarts and great liars. Therefore, if they lie in front of a judge their facial features would not change. On one hand, psychopaths could be a problem for society. The lack of feelings is the main reason I think they could not be useful. A psychopath surgeon is definitely ... • 5. Psychopathy and Antisocial Personality Disorder Essay Introduction The purpose of this study is to compare and contrast the constructs of psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder. The aim is to highlight whether the terms psychopathy and antisocial personality disorder reflect the same construct or whether they differ. Furthermore, recommendations for treatment of criminal behavior will be explored. For the purposes of this evaluation some definitions need to be highlighted: Criminal offence is an act that breaks a law, which relates how to behave in society. The harm caused by the act is seen to be against society as a whole, not just a specific person. Sometimes it refers to the specific law that was broken (Herring, 2009). Crime is the breach of rules or law for which some authority ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Furthermore, psychopathy was considered during the twentieth century, the most widely used term to describe antisocial behavior (Reed, 1996). In the 1980s, the committee who devised the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for the American Psychiatric Association recommended the term antisocial personality syndrome to be changed to antisocial personality disorder (Ellis & Walsh, 2000). Antisocial Personality Disorder Hare & McPherson (1984), were successful in pushing the idea that there is a significant correspondence between violent and persistent delinquent and criminal histories and antisocial personality disorder diagnosis. Acute persistent child conduct disorder behavior symptoms, also known as conduct disorder, have been directly linked to serious criminality and antisocial personality disorder (Ellis & Walsh, 2000). Although criminality and antisocial personality disorder ought not be equated, they should be seen as closely linked behavioral phenomena (Ellis & Walsh, 2000). Vitella (1996) believes that individuals with childhood conduct disorder have a higher than normal probability of being both criminal and diagnosed antisocial personality disorder in adolescence and adulthood, and persons with serious criminal records have a higher probability of being diagnosed psychopathic than those with little or no criminal history. Nevertheless, Ellis & Walsh (2000) in caution pointed out that these ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Psychopathy Is a Necessary Study for the Criminal System... Psychopathy, in both the mental health and criminal justice systems, has emerged as one of the most important clinical constructs of the 21st century (Hare, Clark, Grann, & Thornton, 2000, p. 623). Where clinically, psychopathy is traditionally described as a combination of inferred socially deviant behaviors and personality traits. Some traits and behaviors a psychopath is seen to possess are commonly known, for example, to being impulsive, selfish, aggressive, lacking remorse, shame, feeling for others, pathologically lying, and having asocial or antisocial behaviors (Hare, & Neumann, 2006, p. 59–60). One of the reasons as to why psychopathy has come to see an increase in the development of its theoretical and applied interest is the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 58). The 20 traits and behaviors that are assessed in the PCL–R are conning/manipulative, grandiose sense of self– worth, glibness/superficial charm, lack of remorse or guilt, lack of realistic, long–term goals, shallow affect, impulsivity, irresponsibility, pathological lying. As well as, failure to accept responsibility for ones own actions, revocation of conditional release, criminal versatility, parasitic life style, callous/lack of empathy, poor behavior controls, promiscuous sexual relations, early behavior problems, many short–term marital relationships, juvenile delinquency, and a need for stimulation/prone to boredom (Hare et al., 2006 p. 63). Therefore, as a strength of the PCL–R system, unlike APD, an antisocial lifestyle is only part of the diagnostic criteria for psychopathy (Fine, & Kennett, 2004, p. 425). Where as psychometric analysis of the PCL–R consistently identifies two factors. One of the factors corresponds to personality features, such as lacking guilt or remorse, or a lack of empathy, while the other looks into features of antisocial lifestyles, such as impulsivity or poor behaviour controls (Fine & Kennett, 2004, p. 425). The PCL–R gives individuals that are being assessed in these traits and behaviors a score from a 3– point scale (0,1, 2) (Hare et al., 2006, p. 59). • 13. Psychopaths: A Case Study The word "psychopath" may call to mind the sadistic Hollywood cannibal Hannibal Lector or the infamous serial killer from the 1970s Ted Bundy. This perception of psychopathy is accurate but incomplete. Psychopaths are significantly more likely to make contact with the criminal justice system and their crimes also tend to be more violent than those of other criminals (Carré et al., 2013). Psychopaths are found to be responsible for approximately 50% of serious crimes and make up about 20% of North American prisons (Hare, 1999). Psychopaths are notorious for being among society's most dangerous individuals; however, this category not only refers to the ruthless serial killers, sex–offenders, and stereotypical convicts. In reality, most psychopaths are not criminals. In fact, most psychopaths possess a superficial charm that makes them rather appealing. This paper will focus less on the extreme, criminalized psychopath and more on those whom we might unknowingly encounter in everyday life. After exploring the diagnostic criteria for psychopaths and how the qualities associated with psychopathy tend to be favored in the workplace, this paper will examine how the disorder poses ethical problems for corporations and how society is dealing with the issue. Before exploring the callous world of the psychopath, the distinction between psychopathy and sociopathy must be addressed. While these two terms are frequently used interchangeably, they are not identical diagnoses. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Similarities And Similarities Between A Psychopath And... Taking after on around 40 years of empirical research, the PCL–R, has developed a perfect instrument for the evaluation of this phenomenon. Scoring criteria rate each of 20 things on a 3– point scale (0, 1, 2) as per the degree that it applies to a given person. This test takes into consideration a greatest score of 40; a score of 30 assigns somebody as a psychopath. The normal non–psychopath will score around 5 or 6 on this test. Comfortable or business–psychopaths likely will score in the center 20s–and sexually immoral psychopaths tend to score higher. There are many similarities between a psychopath and politician. A politician is a psychopath with a gift that brings an informed and developed vocabulary that never ends. Not even when the psychopath is caught in a lie, he begins to act worried. Nonetheless he confuses the person who integrated him with his vocabulary and body language. Just like a psychopath, a skilled politician to charm and manipulate their audience, especially if you target the right audience, such as Donald Trump directed against the Republicans for this year's presidential election in the United States. Now that we have addressed Trump is he a good example for politicians? Since Donald Trump such as the psychopath usually want to put ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 21. Columbine, By Dave Cullen Although it is not obvious in modern society, psychopaths may survive and thrive within the population. Psychopaths are typically represented as stark outliers that rarely exist outside of mental institutions, but this is not always the case. In Columbine, by Dave Cullen, Cullen investigates the psychological state of Eric Harris, the mastermind behind the Columbine massacre that occurred on April 20, 1999. Through his extensive definition of psychopathy, Cullen elaborates on the reasons that led Eric to murder many of his peers, and to explain how his psychopathic nature helped him accomplish his mission. Psychopaths are typically devoid of emotion, and have an inherent sense of superiority that drives them to take actions that society considers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In order to more accurately define psychopathy, Cullen calls upon Dr. Robert Hare. He is "the leading authority on psychopaths," and writes that psychopaths can "torture and mutilate their victims with about the same sense of concern that we feel when we carve a turkey for Thanksgiving dinner" (239). By referring to the work of Dr. Hare, Cullen simultaneously builds his ethos while also illustrating the psychological state of the killer. Eric, along with other psychopaths, exhibited two defining characteristics: "a ruthless disregard for others," and "an astonishing gift for disguising the first" (240). A non–psychopath is rarely able to kill so indiscriminately, due to the emotional burden it leaves on the killer. However, Eric cannot empathize with other human beings, and does not feel pain or conflict when killing. In addition, his exceptional aptitude for deception allowed him to manipulate Robyn Anderson to buy the guns for him, under the pretense that he wanted to go hunting. It also enabled him to lie extensively to his parents about the true nature of the bombs he had in his possession. • 25. Insanity In Hamlet Insanity is a thing which can be easily faked. A person could go into the streets, shriek wildly, say nonsense phrases, pick fights with strangers, and eventually the cops will be called on a report of some lunatic making a ruckus. Faking insanity for your own benefit, however, is harder to do successfully without any unintended consequences. Take for example Shakespeare's "Hamlet", a play with the central theme of fabricated insanity for revenge purposes. Hamlet's revenge scheme about faking his own insanity to eventually get close enough to murder his murderer uncle in a way to send him into the darkest depths of hell never to have mercy upon him ever again doesn't go as he would have liked it to go, ending up with a death count of unforeseen proportions which, not according to plan, included himself. The actual faking of insanity, however, was brilliantly done by Hamlet, fooling everyone, including the audience at some points, into thinking he had actually lost some, if not all, of his marbles. This level of expressed lunacy from our dear Hamlet has let some conclude that he is truly mad. A group on the other side of the coin, however, has not pinned him as crazy, but instead as a psychopath using his craziness to his advantage. Psychopathy in humans can be either easy or hard to diagnose, depending on what sources you go to. One of the supposed ways of singling out a psychopath is to apply them to the Psychopathy Checklist – Revised (PCL–R), a set of 20 traits most ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 29. The Psychopathy Checklist: Screening Version Of The PCL-R Overall, it was, in my opinion, a great reading. I was impressed how I have heard the term psychopathy, but it is startling how complex this personality disorder is. Of course, as the reading mentioned, oftentimes psychopaths are portrayed as cold–blooded, serial killers, etc. Indubitably, this might happen in some cases but the complexity it implies to determine if an individual is a psychopath is far beyond the reach a non–professional psychologist or psychiatrist. I personally have not been in a situation or known someone with such personality, or better say, I didn't notice it because of I didn't have the knowledge or the information I have obtained after reading this textbook about psychopathy. From now on, I am sure that I will pay more attention to the personality of the people I interact with. I think that although it is difficult if I were to be in a situation where someone I know with such personality, more than tempting to label that person as a psychopath, it would be intimidating to know or suppose with great certainty that you know a psychopath. Certainly, there are many psychopaths out there and/or people that would score higher on the PCL–R. Whether it's in the workplace, the abusive, controlling, threatening, deceitful, and aggressive behavior of psychopaths are harmful to the family and in a professional relationship. This book "Without Conscience" comes from a man who has dedicated his life to study of psychopaths. He basically invented the measurement for determining psychopathy. We are introduced to the psychopath as an individual, a person who has no conscience or remorse, has the ability to manipulate anyone or anything for their personal gain, and does not experience the social world as a normal, empathetic individual. Prior to his work there were not a lot oresources available to identify psychopaths. Due to its primary role in processing memory and emotional reactions, over the last decade and a half psychologists have been linking the amygdala to psychopathy. It is involved in aversive conditioning and instrumental learning and is thus involved in all the processes that, when impaired, produce the same functional impairments displayed by psychopaths. Two famous studies conducted by Tiihonen and Kiehl respectively have confirmed this. Tiihonen used a volumetric MRI to test and confirm the positive correlation between low amygdaloid volume and a high degree of psychopathy in violent criminals (measured by the Hare checklist–revised) while Kiehl used a functional MRI to prove reduced amygdala response during an emotional memory task in individuals who scored high on the Hare checklist–revised. However, both these studies along with numerous others were conducted using violent offenders as subjects rather than individuals with psychopathy. Although many psychopaths do exhibit violent tendencies, not all violent offenders are necessarily psychopaths. A study conducted by Raine is one of the few that did focus only on individuals exhibiting psychopathy. In his study Raine was able to show reduced prefrontal grey matter in his test subjects. A cost–benefit analysis. Journal of Research in Crime and Delinquency, 43(2), 148–168. DOI: 10.1177/0022427805280053 The researchers conducted a cost–benefit analysis of two different treatments for juvenile delinquents to determine the economic value of intervention strategies, investigating the effectiveness of the Mendota Juvenile Treatment Center, which is based on the "Decompression" treatment model as well as Aggression Replacement Training. It is more cost effective to employ treatment based services instead of "harsher or more security–focused sanctions" for youth offenders. Such treatments also lessened the likelihood of reoffending, which supports the increased use of intervention strategies. The article offers a compelling argument for the treatment of juvenile offenders, approaching the subject with a perspective centered in economics. Since state tax revenues are used to detain criminals, this investment can be better spent on rehabilitative treatments, as it will save the state money in the future by decreasing recidivism. Therefore, this study supports other research in echoing the potential of rehabilitative measures to aid juveniles. Ermer, E., Cope, L. M., Nyalakanti, P. K., Calhoun, V. D., & Kiehl, K. A. (2013). The Girl on the Train shows multiple ways of how Tom Watson has signs of being a psychopath. This movie should be classified as a psychological thriller because Rachel endures emotional abuse, as well as the physical abuse, Tom is a pathological liar, and a psychopathic killer. Hare Checklist Case Study There are advantages to the Hare Checklist, specifically identification of the checklist as one of the most reliable tests at detecting psychopathy, if used by trained, professional personnel (Hare, 1990). The checklist is extensive in the identification of psychopathy, containing a 20 items long list as well as an interview and a review of past records and behaviors (Hare, 1990). The benefits of the checklist include determining the most effective care for an individual diagnosed as a psychopath, and responsibility for identifying possible psychopaths in prisons and other institutions who may become repeat offenders of violent crime (Hare, 1990). Theoretically, this would sound preferable, but in actuality a conscience is what makes us truly human, and without it we would not have any compassion or empathy for others. This is why conscienceless people, psychopaths, are such a threat to society; they care only for themselves and will not hesitate to harm anyone if it means they achieve a certain goal. Welcome to the world of a psychopath. Although scientist do not classify psychopathy as a mental illness, a psychopath is defined as a person suffering from a chronic mental disorder with abnormal violent of social behavior (Psychopath). Psychopaths are human beings just like everyone else except they lack the one thing that makes life worth living: feelings. They do not have ability to show empathy and remorse towards others. Psychopaths are commonly mistaken for sociopaths. While sociopaths have a conscience but tend to disregard it, psychopaths on the other hand do not have a conscience. In other words, sociopaths choose to be the way they are while psychopaths do not have control over the way they are. Psychologist's have begun to take a deeper look into the lives of imprisoned psychopaths to determine who they are, both their biological and psychological roots, their patterns, and possible treatments. When you ask someone to think of a psychopath, it is almost first instinct to think of a murderer or a serial killer. Although there are thousands that are indeed murders, not all psychopaths are. This disorder has been researched since approximately the 18th century. Modern technology in science can detect psychopathy by examining the human brain using different techniques. This technology can and should be used to prevent violence in the world today. Research of the brain abnormalities in psychopaths have been traced back to the 1800's when an Italian psychiatrist and criminologist Cesare Lombroso stated that all of the mental functions in one's brain are localized in different parts of the brain. Lombroso generalized the idea that one is born with a "criminal mind". The criminal mind can be classified by "deformations of their skulls". (Weber ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Moving forward into the 20th century, Hervey Cleckley made a contribution to the knowledge and research of the psychopathic brain. He wrote a book called, "The Mask of Sanity" (1976) where he described psychopathy as a configuration of interpersonal and behavioral features. He found that not only do psychopaths contain an antisocial behavior, they also have many negative characterizations and traits such as being manipulative, fearless, impulsive and lacking empathy as well as remorse or guilt. He also found that psychopathy is not only in those who show criminal behavior, however psychopathy may be present in those who appear to be successful and socially fit individuals. Furthering the studies of psychopathy, there are two main theories that have been used to explain this abnormalities in the brain. The first theory is called the Somatic Marker Hypothesis of Damasio (1994) which proposed that damage to the prefrontal cortex in the brain causes poor decision making abilities which shows a lack of potential development for the somatic aspects that are linked to the excitement of rewards and/or punishment. This leads to an inconsiderate attitude towards any negative consequences as well as social rules or outcomes. This theory is supported by its neurobiological equivalent which is the orbitofrontal and medial frontal cortex in the brain which is responsible for decision making and other cognitive processes. In 1993, Hare wrote a book titled "Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of Psychopaths Among Us." The book surrounds around the world of violent and non–violent psychopaths. With nearly two million psychopaths in North America, the prevalence for this illness is higher than one would expect. The overall purpose of Hare's novel is to bring awareness about the truths surrounding psychopathy, the chilling future this illness poses and how society can reduce their risk of being targeted by a psychopath. These three questions lead the discussion–based book to a cohesive understanding and theorization of psychopathy (Hare, 1993). While the literature takes no determinative stance, the psychopath has nonetheless become a distinct group in the binding legislation of the 1913 mental health Act. The following fall under this category: previous diagnosis as a psychopath or similar disorder, early behavioural problems, juvenile delinquency, and short–tempered/poor behavioural control. Acts such as poor probation or parole risk, many types of offences, and pathological lying and deception are grouped in Factor 5. The Levenson Self–report Psychopathy Scale (LSRP; Levenson, Kiehl, & Fitzpatrick, 1995), and the "Reading the Mind in the Eyes" test revised (RMET; Baron–Cohen, Wheelwright, Hill, Raste & Plumb, 2001) were used to assess the subcategories of psychopathy and empathy. The results were that primary psychopathy and cognitive empathy are significantly, weakly, negatively related, but that secondary psychopathy and cognitive empathy are not correlated. Psychopathy is usually defined as a personality disorder characterized by antisocial behaviour, lack of empathy and remorse and bold superficial behaviour. A checklist developed by Dr Bob Hare identifies the key traits of a psychopath which is used universally to identify psychopaths. The main features of psychopaths include: Superficial charm Grandiose sense of self worth Pathological lying Cunning/manipulative Lack of remorse/guilt Emotionally shallow Callous/lack of empathy Failure to accept responsibility for own actions Lack of realistic long–term goals Impulsivity Introduction Upon deciding what sentences to give to criminal psychopaths, we must consider multiple factors. Firstly I will discuss the issues with the classification and diagnosis of psychopathy, the importance being that if the wrong diagnosis is given it could cause a problem with criminal judgements. The management and treatment of psychopaths must also be examined, exploring their reactions and responses to different types of environments and treatments and significantly their likelihood of reoffending if released. Finally it must be decided whether psychopaths should be held criminally responsible for their actions (and therefore sentenced to prison) or be entitled to the insanity defence and be sent to a psychiatric hospital to be treated, where the psychopath would usually spend longer time than if they were sentenced to prison. The play tackles issues of race, gender and encompasses ideas of jealousy and deceit. Shakespeare also brings to life a variety of well–constructed characters. Iago, the deceitful antagonist, can easily be identified as the liveliest and most complex character in the play. His devious nature raises the question of whether or not he is a sociopath. When asked by Othello to recap the events of the quarrel, Iago says "I had rather have this tongue cut from my mouth/ Then it should do offence to Michael Cassio" (2.3.205–206). In saying so, Iago comes off to Othello as both honest and loyal, most definitely charming him and covering up the fact that it was Iago himself who intentionally set up the quarrel in order to become lieutenant. In document A, "conning others for personal profit or pleasure" is said to be usual of sociopaths. This is easily applicable to Iago's character, who for the sake of becoming lieutenant and destroying Othello, manages to deceive several characters in the play and ends up being the cause of Roderigo, Desdemona, Emilia and Othello's deaths. In addition, some people exhibit more sociopathic traits than others, which is why sociopathy lies on a spectrum. They live a life devoid of true pleasure, unable to enjoy a sunset or the company of an animal or another person('Psychiatry,'1997). They only get temporary, meaningless thrills out of things like sex or food or misleading and manipulating others. Most threateningly, this emotional deficiency means that they are unable to love. It also means that they must spend their entire lives watching others and learning to imitate behave. The boredom is almost painful for them, and they will do anything to alleviate it. This contributes to their tendency to act impulsively and recklessly; for instance, it is very common for psychopaths to become addicted to alcohol, sex, and drugs. And ultimately, they will do anything and everything to get rid of their boredom because, having no conscience and no empathy, they do not care who gets hurt in the process. Pechorin claims that he does not enjoy bringing misery to others, and that when he does, he feels just as miserable. I do not hold the belief that a person is incapable of changing – with the exception of a certain type of person – and those who refuse to make the necessary changes are little better then a coward who runs from an engagement with the enemy. It is not logical behavior to inflict misery upon oneself, without that misery being in the service of a higher ideal, and even then, it still runs contrary to the natural instinct for survival. The fact that a very substantial portion of the populace engages in this very sort of illogical behavior does not constitute a defense for Pechorin, nor does it make the behavior reasoned and logical. The other sort of person, the sort that is incapable of changing, are the insane. Generally, they are not a concern, as once they are identified as such, they are usually dealt with, these days by either medication or institutionalization. Future Psychopathic Offenders With these doubts to using the causes of psychopathy to identify future psychopathic offenders, there are ways in which the legal system, including psychologists, therapists, and courts, can better determine the likelihood of a future psychopathic offender and how to care for them. Looking back at the histories of adult psychopaths, they "consistently committed more violent and non–violent crimes" from their "adolescence to their late 40s" (Birt et al. 647). When working backwards and looking within the large number of youths that have psychopathic tendencies, one understands from the evidence that some will continue to commit crimes as they grow up into adulthood. Robert Hare Without Conscience Summary This non–fictional, eye–opener book, Without Conscience (New York: The Guilford Press, 1993) by Dr. Robert Hare, is an account of his years as a prison psychologist and everyday life encounters with psychopaths. The next 25 years he would spend conducting empirical research, which led to the development of the answer to his question, "What is the psychological makeup that give a psychopath the power to override reality without compunction?" "Is it nature or nurture?" Dr. Hare's quest to unravel the true origin of these individuals, he first focused on who they are and their behaviors. He described, clarified and captivated the personality traits and socially deviant behaviors of a psychopath. Importantly, this book served as a "guide" in knowing how to protect oneself if ever cross–paths with a psychopath. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hare could not definitively conclude that either ones' biological factors or social forces made a person a psychopath, he rather believed it is an interplay between the both and their ability to make emotional connection, is greatly reduced (p. 173). He affirmed that psychopaths are difficult if not impossible to treat, because they themselves believe that they have no psychological or emotional problems. When Dr. Hare's prison experience was over he continued his profession of psychiatry, he postulated that a psychopath is not only for prisoners but for all people. One of my reactions to this book was the Psychopathy Checklist, which Dr. Hare created as a tool for discovering psychopaths are egocentric and have no feelings of empathy, guilt or remorse. They view others as potential victims, and they leave a trail of unhappiness behind them in those who have given in to their deceitful manipulations. Dr. Hare challenges stereotypical beliefs of psychopaths and reveal who they really are and how he/she presents. He described a psychopath not by physical appearance, but mostly by their innate ... A psychopath is traditionally defined as someone with a personality disorder characterized by persistent antisocial behavior, impaired empathy and remorse, and bold, disinhibited, egotistical traits. In society, psychopaths display specific characteristics such as lack of empathy, which may identify and explain how they respond in certain situations. There are various physical and behavioral differences between a psychopath and an average person. In the book The Social Brain: Evolution and Pathology, doctors of psychiatry Hedda Ribbert and Wulf Schiefenhövel explain psychopath's core features as a lack of empathy, persistent disregard for the feelings of others, reduced emotion, and have autonomic hyperresponsivity to sad and fearful ... In the book Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us by Robert D Hare, the author described how those diagnosed with this have little capacity for seeing the consequences of their behavior (Hare 77). Psychopaths exhibit extreme emotions or none at all, and their function processing is slower than that of a person with little to no psychopathic tendencies. There are various methods to identify psychopaths and forms that psychosis may occur. In the mind, there is no physical location that can be analyzed by an x–ray, a dissection, or a microscope to determine psychopathy; therefore the diagnosis of a mental disorder is known as subjective judgment. One complex system that is used is the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, DSM III (Hollin 101). • 122. Serial Killers, By Flannery O ' Connor In this world, there are people who are able to shoot, bludgeon, or torture a whole family and then sleep peacefully just hours after. Serial Killers have piqued the American public's interest for generations. In the 1970s, for example, America was enthralled by the danger and fear of Ted Bundy and John Wayne Gacy, famous serial killers who killed a combined number of over a hundred people. Following suit of the popularity of serial killers, they have become ingrained in our culture through art, books, news, talk–shows, and movies. A famous example of this trend is in Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard to Find", where the antagonist, The Misfit, brutally murders a family of six. O'Connor described The Misfit as a calm, polite, analytical, morally–confused, murderer with leadership skills and "strong white teeth." This archetype, a person who can be perfectly calm while being aggressive and lacks a sense of right or wrong, has also been an interest of study in the medical field. The medical community has come together for patients that are described as lacking a moral conscious, naming their disorder psychopathy (Robinson). In Flannery O'Connor's "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" The Misfit exhibits signs of psychopathy, shown from his manipulating control over Bobby Lee and Hiram, and staying calm while he directly and indirectly kills six people. • 126. Do Sex Offenders Are Classified As Psychopaths? Many sex offenders are classified as psychopaths. Psychopathy is defined as 'a distinctive cluster of behaviours and inferred personality traits, most of which society view as pejorative.' (p.4, Hare, 1995). Psychopaths are particularly challenging to work with, let alone treat. The most well known tool to assess psychopathy is Hare's (2003) Psychopathy Checklist – Revised (PCL–R). The PCL–R has been used to predict re–offending, however, it seems to be more accurate for violent and general offenders as opposed to sex offenders (Olver & Wong, 2009). In addition to the PCL–R, there are two other risk assessment tools which are used to assess the risk of recidivism. These are the Historical, Clinical and Risk Management scale (HCR) ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... If the offender does not see a need to change, then treatment will not work (Bryan, Casey, Davey & Day, 2006). Therefore instead of focusing on 'what works', it's important to ask 'what works for who, and why?' (Harkins, Stephenson & Woodhams, 2013). While a few treatment programs have already been discussed, there are endless number of treatment programs available. These target problems such as deficits in empathy, intimacy, problem solving, thinking abilities, self–control and social skills. To be successful treatment programs must aim to build the capacity of the individual by targeting internal and external conditions. Internal conditions refers to attitudes, skills and knowledge of the offender. Whereas external conditions refer to factors such as social support, employment and education which improve the quality of life (Durrant & Ward, 2011). First and foremost, for these conditions to change the offender must have the motivation to want to change. This motivation needs to be married with a positive relationship with the therapist, and a support network within the group setting. When the offender is part of a group of people with a similar story, they take on dual roles – one of being a person who is being helped, and the other, being someone who is a helper. This empowers the offender and assists with motivation to change. By developing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Or, is it merely the ability to ask this very question, or ones exceedingly similar in form? Darwin's The Descent of Man attempts to provide a foundational understanding to how we all got to where we are, and what our origins might say about our present. In particular, the way in which evolution is applied to various species, natural selection, is said to dictate which members of a certain species survive according to their proclivities determined by genetics. Psychopathy is defined by Psychology Today: "to refer to a more serious disorder, linked to genetic traits, producing more dangerous individuals." (Psychology Today) Some use the term to include environmental circumstances as contributing to psychopathy, but generally, psychopaths are said to be differentiated from sociopaths by their ability to function within society. Psychopaths are grouped together by a determined set of identifiers including, but not limited to, a lack of empathy, irresponsibility, "shallow emotions", being insincere, charisma, a "failure to follow any life plan", and most distinctively, a tendency toward violence and selfishness. Often bored, they are pathological liars that thrive on drama, or anything to supplement their stimulation, frequently including being sexually promiscuous. When examining the immediate connotations of this list of symptoms, it is clear that psychopaths are those who might be most hated and feared in society. They usually are portrayed as creepy–looking, antisocial characters who plan to do unnatural and gruesome things to other people. An example could be Jason or Michael Myers or even Hannibal Lector from Silence of the Lambs. Unfortunately, psychopaths are not easy to identify. According to an interview with Martha Stout, an author and clinical instructor at Harvard, psychopaths are often said to be "the most charming person I ever met, the sexiest, the most intense. ..." The brain of a psychopath differs from the brain of a normal person. In Hugues Hervé's book, various experiments were conducted on a control group of men and psychopathic men. Analysis Of Capital Murder Trial In this article, Edens and Cox suggest that the prosecution in capital murder trials produce evidence regarding antisocial personality disorder, sociopathy, and psychopathy. ASPD, sociopathy, and psychopathy all have a long history in the criminal justice system. In their research, they found little systematic research on how much of an impact ASPD, sociopathy, and psychopathy have on a case outcome. The results showed that substance dependence was highly prevalent. Violent behaviors were not associated with all substance dependent diagnoses. The symptom severity was associated with women dependent on opiates, alcohol, and cocaine. Lewis concluded that incarcerated women with ASPD and substance dependence, so outweighed the abuse, that there is not a big enough sample size yet to fully explore the relationship. Some of the traits associated with psychopathy are an inability to control oneself or being able to think before acting in a hastily manner, a defiance to consequences, a loss of empathy and safety of other people, a lack of honesty, and an abundant amount of intimate activity with multiple partners (Harris Skilling Rice, 197–98). Misfit Character The Mustard Seed that Never Sprouted Life is full of twists and turns, also characters that could deceive the most intuitive person on earth, but there is no deny that O'Connor's grandmother character in "A Good Man is Hard to Find" is far from that mold. By reading the story in its entirety it is evident that the type of person played by this character is far from someone who is genuinely seeking the salvation of a lost soul. In contrast, the Misfit character seem to be that old wise wolf that could smell the blood and fear from miles away, waiting for the right time to execute its victim.
