• We use the past continuous or progressive to
express an action or event that happened in
the past time and progressed or continued for
a while.
In other words:

Auxiliary ‘ to be’ in the simple past + Present Participle
i.e., (that is to say)
Was/ Were + ‘ base form + ing’
( Present Participle)

- Yesterday morning at 6:00, I was sleeping in my
bedroom.
- While I was dreaming, were you dreaming too?
->Yes I was
->No, you weren’t
- Last night, I was doing homework when you called
me.
- When the teacher explained the lesson, some
students were not ( weren’t) paying attention.
