Managing the classroom
Classroom Management If teachers want to manage a classroom they have to control different variables. These include spaces and organization, the way we appear to our students, and even our voice. A well managed class knows how to deal with difficult situations.
Teacher in the Classroom Our physical presence plays a large part in classroom management, Ss. Respond to the way we move, stand, and solve problems. There are many things that influence the Ssperception of us like: Proximity: A teacher needs to be conscious of how close they have to be to the students they work with. Appropriacy: They are all the positions a teacher takes, it makes a statement about the teacher’s character. Movement: Refers to the amount of motions a teacher makes. It will depend of how comfortable we feel. Awareness: A teacher must always be aware of what Ss are feeling or doing.
Using the Voice Our voice is the most important tool we have. It has a crucial impact on our classes. When using our voice we need to consider: Audibility: a teacher must make sure everyone in the class can hear him. They need good voice projection. Variety: a teacher must have “different voices” for every situation that may happen in the class. Conservation: A teacher must take care of his voice. Breathing properly, varying our voices, and avoid shouting help conserve vocal energy.
Giving instructions There are two rules for giving instructions: They must be kept as simple as possible. They must be logical When teachers give instructions, it is important for them to check that the students have  understood what they are being asked to do. This can be achieved: Asking a student to explain the activity after the teacher has given the instruction. Getting someone to shows the other people how the exercise works.
Student talk and Teacher talk Classes are sometimes criticized because there is to much TTT (Teacher talking time) and not enough STT (Student talking time). When the TTT is to much, there is less chance for the students to practice their own  speaking,  also they have less time for other activities such as reading and writing. Using L1 - L1 is the native language of the students. - The teachers have to know when is appropriate to use L1 in classroom - Is natural for beginners that they translate everything to their L1. But is an English class, that´s why always has to be an English environment in the room.
- Some teachers like to use films in L1 with subtitles in English, judging when the subtitles can be turn off for high level students. - Although we have seen that L1 can be use as a enabling tool, English always has to be predominate in an English lesson.

  • 2. Classroom Management If teachers want to manage a classroom they have to control different variables. These include spaces and organization, the way we appear to our students, and even our voice. A well managed class knows how to deal with difficult situations.
  • 3. Teacher in the Classroom Our physical presence plays a large part in classroom management, Ss. Respond to the way we move, stand, and solve problems. There are many things that influence the Ssperception of us like: Proximity: A teacher needs to be conscious of how close they have to be to the students they work with. Appropriacy: They are all the positions a teacher takes, it makes a statement about the teacher’s character. Movement: Refers to the amount of motions a teacher makes. It will depend of how comfortable we feel. Awareness: A teacher must always be aware of what Ss are feeling or doing.
  • 4. Using the Voice Our voice is the most important tool we have. It has a crucial impact on our classes. When using our voice we need to consider: Audibility: a teacher must make sure everyone in the class can hear him. They need good voice projection. Variety: a teacher must have “different voices” for every situation that may happen in the class. Conservation: A teacher must take care of his voice. Breathing properly, varying our voices, and avoid shouting help conserve vocal energy.
  • 5. Giving instructions There are two rules for giving instructions: They must be kept as simple as possible. They must be logical When teachers give instructions, it is important for them to check that the students have understood what they are being asked to do. This can be achieved: Asking a student to explain the activity after the teacher has given the instruction. Getting someone to shows the other people how the exercise works.
  • 6. Student talk and Teacher talk Classes are sometimes criticized because there is to much TTT (Teacher talking time) and not enough STT (Student talking time). When the TTT is to much, there is less chance for the students to practice their own speaking, also they have less time for other activities such as reading and writing. Using L1 - L1 is the native language of the students. - The teachers have to know when is appropriate to use L1 in classroom - Is natural for beginners that they translate everything to their L1. But is an English class, that´s why always has to be an English environment in the room.
  • 7. - Some teachers like to use films in L1 with subtitles in English, judging when the subtitles can be turn off for high level students. - Although we have seen that L1 can be use as a enabling tool, English always has to be predominate in an English lesson.
