This document summarizes the five principal layers of Earth's atmosphere: 1) The troposphere extends from Earth's surface to around 12 km and contains 50% of the atmosphere's mass. 2) The stratosphere lies above the troposphere, extending from 12-50 km, and contains the ozone layer. 3) The mesosphere occupies the region above the stratosphere from 50-85 km and is the coldest place on Earth.
