1. Wretch 32 ft Example - Unorthodox
Music Video Analysis
2. Generic Codes, Conventions & Form of music video
• Genre = Hip Hop Director = Ben Newman Video Release = March 2011
• The video is a performance but can be seen as somewhat conceptual making it a
hybrid
• It can be seen as conceptual as the whole idea of the video is promoting
unorthodox actions/behaviour, filled with dancers dressed in unconventional
clothing around an estate based in the city I’m assuming is London.
In this image we see the director has made
the little boy dress in an old blazer, with a
shirt and bow tie next to a trolley with a
speaker in it about to start street
dancing, this image epitomises what the
director has aimed to display throughout
this video, difference or rather unorthodox
actions among the ‘average’ person
Long shot shows urban environment
3. Cinematography, Editing & Effects
The video begins with definitions of the
words ‘Orthodox’ and ‘Unorthodox’ in a
formal font that you would expect to see in
the dictionary
4. Establishing shot of
the city with man in
the middle of the
shot overseeing it.
A two shot of the
two artists/musicians
rapping their
lyrics, performing to
the camera
Whilst leading up to the chorus the word
‘unorthodox’ gets spelt out in three different
cuts with three different images, despite the
writing being over the images, you can see in
the middle picture, (which is a close up shot)
the amount of piercings this person has which
is unconventional
5. Mise-en-scene
Wretch 32, Example as well as many other artist making cameos and normal people are wearing
jackets with ‘32’ on it, a symbol of difference in an ironic way. They are promoting doing thing
unorthodox things and the similar jackets show a sign of unity and agreement with the main
point of the song
Multiple different shots of the estate the video is mainly set on, a suggestion that
despite living in a certain area, you don’t have to act a particular way which intertwines
with London and stereotype of the behaviour of people on estates.
6. Relationship between sound and images + Audience
• I believe this video is aimed at teenagers and young adults as
most of the people in the video are a young age and are doing
unconventional things which is the message of the song.
• “We don’t follow know crowds/they follow us” is the first line
of the chorus in which we see people dressed differently but
doing normal things such as street dancing, in the old blazer
and shirt + tie
7. Institutions & Representations
• Wretch 32 is signed to Ministry of Sound and
was also a soundtrack for fifa street
• Teenagers are represented in a more positive
light, breaking negative stereotypes as they
are shown to be different + individual
