2. Production techniques research
• Research potential production techniques you might want to use or
feel would be most appropriate – these can be related to camera,
editing, story, sound, etc
• You should look at a minimum of 3 related products in your research.
• You should collect clips/still images/how to guides/etc that might
help you. When watching scenes from films, etc you could also ask
potential target audience what they think.
• You may need to add extra slides!
• With each technique you should assess whether you can use it or
how you might employ or why you may want to disregard it
completely
• Always think about your investigations links to your intentions and
production!
3. Product 1
• Structure and flowing from scene too scene – Snatch opening titles
• They use opening doors and cupboards with a wipe to move along. They also use
actions like putting something down to change the scene and it flows nicely as they
match up. In one part they have an object cross the scene, in this case it was a bag
but it would work for anything. This would be something to practice in the
experiments bit
• I am probably going to use the creative transitions to move from scene to scene
with the people in. This will need to be drawn out in pre-pro and practiced a lot.
There is a chance it may not work depending on the scene structure. Not going to
work if at a wide shots but may work for close-mid shot
4. Product 2
• Cloning people in Premiere Pro – “How to CLONE yourself!!”
• It is basically a process of filming the same scene with the characters
in different locations and masking them out in premier pro can
matching the colour etc.
• Use the mask tool and basic colour correction to give the appearance
of cloning.
• This can be implemented in the “Guillotine, guillotine” lines. I will get
the same actor too do both bits in the same scene like the picture on
the left.
• I will need to experiment with this to find the right masking settings
5. • Motion tracking words in after effects – “After Effects EASY Text Tracking
Tutorial!”
• It is using the built in motion tracking algorithm and matching one of the points
to the many ”plains” that it has analysed.
• The tool is called camera tracker and the add text bit is called create text in
camera
• This can implemented into the opening shot for the title and artist name.
• I will need to experiment with finding a perfect shot style that will track nicely.
Possibly a hand or something like that

6. Genre and artist breakdown
• Think about the conventions of music video and which of these you
feel are the most appropriate for you video and why
• Think about the genre characteristics for your chosen artist – how do
you plan to employ these?
• Which techniques and styles do you think fans of your chosen genre
prefer? What should you expect to see in that type of music video?
• Use the following slides to show your ideas and explain these using
good illustrative examples – this is where your research and
explorations should start. Remember to consider the aspects we
looked at in class [and the academic things from Goodwin, etc].
7. Conventions
• Angel and shot type – Long shots to add context to a scene and close
ups too create a sense of intimacy between the artist and the
audience. The more emotional the song is the more close ups there
usually is.
• Editing – the clips are edited so they cut to the beat of a track, this
adds the enjoyment from the audience and can set a pace for the
video. There are also straight cuts which can carry the narrative
without being to distracting.
• Colour – Colour plays a big part in music videos as it can it tones and
tell audiences what the characters are feeling
8. Genre Characteristics
• Indie pop combines guitar pop with DIY ethic in opposition to the
style and tone of mainstream pop music.
• Compared to its counterpart, indie rock, the genre is more melodic,
less abrasive, and relatively angst-free.
• The songs are usually more thought full and have deeper meaning
than regular pop music
9. Chosen approach/justification
• I am going to only use basic settings and two actors both together in
scenes and just one at other times. I am also going to use lighting on
set, possibly and colour change in premier pro
• I want to do this because it’s a way of showing that they only want
and need each other and that if they are separated life is not good
10. Experiments
Camera/Editing/Audio Experiments
This is for you to evidence the filming and editing tests we did.
Be prepared to add extra slides.
You can add more experiments as you do them as the project progresses.
11. Experiment 1 – Process – Motion Tracking
• For this experiment I found
drone footage on the internet
and ran it through after effects.
I used the 3D camera track and
messed with the settings on
the left. Its not perfected as
the 3d plains it selected didn't
show where I wanted them too
but for an experiment it
worked well.
• For the final project I will have
to keep in mind the framing of
the object it needs to sit on as
it could be skewed and need
re-shooting
12. Experiment 2 – Process – Cloning
• For this experiment we went out
and shot someone in the scene
but in different locations. I then
used an opacity mask to cut the
right side of the video and under
laid the clip of her on the right. I
also had to adjust the brightness
in one of the shots too match the
other side as it was slightly
different. Its not perfected as it is
only a practices.
• It worked well except for there is a
slight line from the door frame.
Next time I wouldn't shoot it in a
door way but on a wall or
something bland like that. Also, I
will try and take control of the
light and not use natural light as it
changes through out the day
13. Experiment 3 – Process – Transitions
• For this experiment and shot
Adam walking through the scene
in different locations. I then used
an opacity mask to cut out the
back end of the shot which
revealed the next location. Its not
perfected as it is only a practices.
• It worked well except for there
was a few bits where too much
jacket was masked out. next time I
would increase the detail of the
mask so it goes round each little
bump to make it smoother. Also, I
will try and change the
background more between shots
so that transition 2 looks more like
wow
14. Reflection
• What elements of your experiments will you include in your final
product?
• I am going to use the motion tracking to show the sing title and who its by
overtop a moving shot of a drive way.
• I don’t think the cloning will fit anywhere well but I will try and make it fit
• The transitions will make it flow nicely from the softer parts of the song to
the more up-beat parts
• What about this process has been notable?
• Motion Tracking
• The analysis of the clip takes a long time if it’s a long clip and it takes a while for after
effects to ”solve camera”
• It looks very professional if it is done correctly
• Cloning
• The colours and light needs to be exactly the same in order for it to work
• The editing is easer than I initially thought so it will be able to be done quickly leaving
more time for other edits
• Fancy Transitions
• The framing needs to be perfect in order for it too flow and be cut smoothly
• Will need a lot of editing and the masking takes ages
• Will also need to be shot perfectly with matching internal setting ( WB, iso, SS, etc.)
