MIDDLE AGES (1347 & 1352)
Compiled by Nonhlanhla Sithole
2. THE BLACK DEATH
• The black death also known as the BUBONIC PLAGUE is a deadly
infectious disease carried by rats and spread by fleas. It killed one-third
of the total population of the content.
• The PLAGUE originated in Central Asia and spread west along overland
trade routes to the Black Sea.
• It spread around Europe, killing an estimated +20 million people.
(REMEMEBER! At that time there was no cure for the plague &
technologies were not as advanced compared to OURS TODAY!)
3. CAUSES
• THE BLACK DEATH was caused by the bacterium
Yersinia pestis which is found in small mammals
(RATS) and spread by fleas. At the time, there was
no hygiene on trading ships therefore, dirt and
small mammals would find a place to stay. This
was negative to the well being of the merchants as
their clothes and food would get infected by
bacteria.
• Rats would get bitten by fleas and then the rodent
fleas would bite humans

5. METHOD OF TRANSMISSION
• FROMRATSTO FLEAS
• Rats are the ones carrying the bacteria then then fleas bite the rats.
• Being in contact with the fluids of the dead rat.
• FROMHUMANTO HUMAN
When a human is being infected with the plague can transmit the disease by
coughing, sneezing or talking as the saliva would spread when we are pronouncing
words.
THE PLAGUE IS SIMILAR TO COVID-19. AS IT WOULD SPREAD THROUGH FLUIDS
AND THE SYMPTOMS WERE SIMILAR TO THE BUBONIC PLAGUE!
6. IMPACTS OF THE BLACK DEATH
- Many of the working class population dies.
- Labour shortages meaning that workers would work overtime.
- Starvation which will lead to people revolting
- People lost hope in churches, as they doubted its power to save them from this horrible
plague
- Art changed and portrayed the sadness and pain of the Black Death
- It affected the mentality of close loved ones as the family members infected suffered
from long painful deaths
7. CURES?
• A person infected needed to be isolated however, people in the
Medieval were clueless about germs therefore, they blamed the
plague on the horrible smell from the cities. They thought that people
who got the disease were poisoned.
• #1. The onion mixed with yeast and butter, this solution cure was
created to soften the swelling so that they can cut open the swellings
with a knife.
• #2. Place a live frog on the sores of the plague. This is because the
frog will absorb all the disease then burst.
• Others suggested #3. Dried Toad, as it would do magnificent job.
8. PLAGUE
DOCTORS
• BUBONIC PLAGUE
DOCTORS would wear a
leather hat, mask with
glass eyes and a beak,
stick to remove clothes of
a plague victim, gloves,
waxed linen robe, and
boots.
