Electrical System Design
• Electrical system design is the design of electrical systems.
• Simple systems can be created by one person. Large systems require
large teams of people, simulation software and many paper and
electronic records.
• The design should assure proper functioning of the installation.
• The design should provide safety.

Electrical System Design For
High Rise Buildings
• High – rise buildings are buildings having 5 floors and above, or
having a height of 15m and above.
• They normally refer to occupancy for:
 General offices
 Commercial establishments
 Hotels /Condominiums

Design Concept
• For all building construction the owner must first have a
concept for the new design, and then the architect or
designer can produce a set of building plans.
• An electrical design goes through several important stages
or development.
• Every electrical design has unique requirements,
depending upon the scope of the project. The project
scope is determined by the customers’ requirements and
the type of structure.

HIGH RISE BUILDING POWER SUPPLY
REQUIREMENTS:
1. General Lighting & Power
 light for general illumination, seeing tasks, decorative features, hallways and stairways, others
 power for appliances and office machines
2. Heating, Ventilation & Air-conditioning (HVAC) System
 air-conditioning for temperature control
 blowers and fans ventilation
 heaters for humidity control
3. Transport System
 elevators and escalators
 conveyors, dumbwaiters, others
4. Water Pumps
 potable and non-potable water supply
 water sprinkle (fire suppression)
 pumps / drainage
 sewage ejectors
5. Communication System
 PABX telephone system
 Intercom

 entrance and exit for pedestrians
 garage and freight
7. Central Computer System
 CPU and peripherals
 Terminals
8. Auxiliaries
 intrusion and hold-up control system
 fire fighting & alarm system
 background music and paging
 sound reinforcement and video facilities

Proposed Project
• The proposed building “Garden Project” at Belhaven
Road, Kowdiar is a 10 storeyed building. It includes a
cellar for parking purpose, and 10 floors of which 2
floors are for commercial purpose, 1 for parking and
the remaining for residential purpose. It has a total
plinth area of 4948.34 sq. m.

 DEFINITION :The sum of the continuous power
ratings of all load-consuming apparatus connected
to an electric power distribution system or any part
thereof.
 Connected load for electricity is the maximum
amount of wattage that is allocated to a building.
 Calculation of Connected Load is done by
engineers from the utility from which the
connection is taken.

• Total No: of light points= 66
(No. of light points= light+fan+6A socket+exhaust
fan)
• No: of light circuits= 66/8 = 8.25 ~9
• Total No: of power points = 19
• No: of power circuits = 19/2 = 9.5~ 10
• Total No: of sub-circuits = 10+9 = 19
• Therefore we choose 8 way 3 phase DB which
has 24 (i.e. 3x8) sub-circuits.

• Connected Load of all floors (except commercial) has been calculated.
• Distribution Board of one apartment has been decided.
• Supplementary drawings were completed.
Work to be Completed
DB of commercial floors and Common CL, Cabling, Metering Panel
Design, Transformer Design, Emergency Power Supply, Earthing and
extensive electrical drawings have to be completed.

  • 3. Electrical System Design • Electrical system design is the design of electrical systems. • Simple systems can be created by one person. Large systems require large teams of people, simulation software and many paper and electronic records. • The design should assure proper functioning of the installation. • The design should provide safety. 3
  • 4. Electrical System Design For High Rise Buildings • High – rise buildings are buildings having 5 floors and above, or having a height of 15m and above. • They normally refer to occupancy for:  General offices  Commercial establishments  Hotels /Condominiums 4
  • 5. Design Concept • For all building construction the owner must first have a concept for the new design, and then the architect or designer can produce a set of building plans. • An electrical design goes through several important stages or development. • Every electrical design has unique requirements, depending upon the scope of the project. The project scope is determined by the customers’ requirements and the type of structure. 5
  • 6. HIGH RISE BUILDING POWER SUPPLY REQUIREMENTS: 1. General Lighting & Power  light for general illumination, seeing tasks, decorative features, hallways and stairways, others  power for appliances and office machines 2. Heating, Ventilation & Air-conditioning (HVAC) System  air-conditioning for temperature control  blowers and fans ventilation  heaters for humidity control 3. Transport System  elevators and escalators  conveyors, dumbwaiters, others 4. Water Pumps  potable and non-potable water supply  water sprinkle (fire suppression)  pumps / drainage  sewage ejectors 5. Communication System  PABX telephone system  Intercom 6

  • 8. Proposed Project • The proposed building “Garden Project” at Belhaven Road, Kowdiar is a 10 storeyed building. It includes a cellar for parking purpose, and 10 floors of which 2 floors are for commercial purpose, 1 for parking and the remaining for residential purpose. It has a total plinth area of 4948.34 sq. m. 8

Connected Load  DEFINITION :The sum of the continuous power ratings of all load-consuming apparatus connected to an electric power distribution system or any part thereof.  Connected load for electricity is the maximum amount of wattage that is allocated to a building.  Calculation of Connected Load is done by engineers from the utility from which the connection is taken. 21

Distribution Board • Total No: of light points= 66 (No. of light points= light+fan+6A socket+exhaust fan) • No: of light circuits= 66/8 = 8.25 ~9 • Total No: of power points = 19 • No: of power circuits = 19/2 = 9.5~ 10 • Total No: of sub-circuits = 10+9 = 19 • Therefore we choose 8 way 3 phase DB which has 24 (i.e. 3x8) sub-circuits. 28

  • 33. Current Status • Connected Load of all floors (except commercial) has been calculated. • Distribution Board of one apartment has been decided. • Supplementary drawings were completed. Work to be Completed DB of commercial floors and Common CL, Cabling, Metering Panel Design, Transformer Design, Emergency Power Supply, Earthing and extensive electrical drawings have to be completed. 33
