Patient must be able to access information on best
practices from expert nurses or other professionals.
Many nurses practice in remote and isolated regions where
accessing needed information and resources is difficult.
6. DEFINITION
E nursing involves the use of computers or electronic
devices in some way to provide training, education and
learning material.
E nursing comprises of all forms of electronically
supported learning and teaching.
E nursing is being used in nurse education and practice.

To enhance nurses to benefit from all
developments in information, communication and
technology.
To improve nursing and client outcomes.
To encounter challenge owing to emergence of new
technology.
8. MODALITIES OF E NURSING
Individualized self- paced e- learning online
Individualized self-paced e- learning offline
Group based e-learning synchronously
Group based e-learning asynchronously
9. INDIVIDUALIZED SELF- PACED E- LEARNING
ONLINE
When an individual nurse accesses
learning resources such as nursing
database online through an internet.
For example a nurse student is searching
for data on some nurse research on the
internet or a local network.
10. INDIVIDUALIZED SELF- PACED E-
LEARNING OFFLINE
When an individual nurse learner is using
nursing database or a computer- assisted
learning packages offline( while not connected
to the internet).
A learner is using hard drive ,CD or DVD.
11. GROUP BASED E-LEARNING SYNCHRONOUSLY
When groups of nurses are working
together in same time through an
internet.
For example one or two way audio
and videoconferencing.
12. GROUP BASED E-LEARNING
ASYNCHRONOUSLY
When groups of nurses are working
over internet and they exchange
themselves with a time delay .
For example: Online discussions
through e-mailing lists.
13. STYLES IN E NURSING
Offline and
online Activities
Synchronous and
Asynchronous
activities
Different
multimedia
assets
Different
Didactical
interactions.
Different Ways
of delivering the
content
Self-study and
collaborative
learning
Formal and
Informal
learning
14. 1. OFFLINE & ONLINE ACTIVITIES
Learning teaching activities takes
place while offline example not
connected to an internet
Learning activities takes place while
online example connected to
internet.
15. 2.SYNCHRONOUS AND ASYNCHRONOUS ACTIVITIES
Within Synchronous learning, Learning and teaching takes
place in same time (real time) , Example. Listening to a live
radio broadcast, watching live television broadcast.
Telephone, video conferencing, Chat , online seminar Skype
conversation is used.
Within asynchronous learning the teaching learning
activities takes place with time delay ( time shift ) . Example
self-paced courses through internet or CD-ROM , video
tapped classes or seminars.
17. 4.DIFFERENT DIDACTICAL
INTERACTIONS
Different didactical approaches can be
used such as assignments,
assessment, pre-test, discussions,
reading, presenting information,
watching a video, asking questions,
workshop, demonstrations,
participating in a simulation etc.
18. 5.DIFFERENT WAY OF DELIVERING
CONTENT
• Various ways to deliver the content are
computer, PDA, TV, mobile phones, iPod
etc.
• Every device has its own characteristics,
advantages and disadvantages.
19. 6.SELF STUDY & COLLABORATIVE
LEARNING
• Learning can be both ways: Individualizes as
well collaborative in e learning.
20. 7.FORMAL AND INFORMAL
LEARNING:
Informal learning is unstructured
, unplanned
Formal learning is a learning that
is planned with specified learning
objectives .
21. FORMS OF E- NURSING(OCED 2005,
BATES & POOLE ,2003)

• Good learning climate minimizes anxiety.
25.
26. CONSTRUCTIVISM
It is a theory of learning.
Here knowledge is constructed by the learner based on
mental activity.
Knowledge is constructed not transmitted,
Purposeful activity is required to build useful knowledge.
27. IMPORTANCE OF E NURSING
To organization
To learners/
nurses
To organization
and community

• It increases retention and application of
information.
• Proof of completion and certification is
also automated.
36. DISADVANTAGES OF E NURSING
• Some forms of e learning perceived as
isolating from the personal touch.
• Nurses may not have the IT Skills needed to
take advantages of e learning.
37. SKILL REQUIRED IN E NURSING
Basic computing
and
communication
skill
Use of
predesigned
packages

internet
resources
38. 1. BASIC COMPUTING&
COMMUNICATION SKILLS
• Word processing , communicating via e mail,
using PowerPoint software to support
presentations , using desktop publishing
packages are required in e- learning.
