5. A motive is a reason for doing something.
Motivation is concerned with the strength and direction of
behavior and the factors that influence people to behave in
certain ways.
The term ‘motivation’ can refer variously to the goals individuals
have, the ways in which individuals, chose their goals and the
ways in which others try to change their behavior.
6. According to Arnold et al (1991) ,there are
three components of motivation :
Direction
What a person is trying to do
Effort
How hard a person is trying
Persistence
How long a person keeps on
trying
9. Expectancy
Theory
Proposed by Victor Vroom in 1964 of Yate School of Management that an
individual will behave or act in a certain way because they are motivated to
select a specific behavior over other due to what they expect the result of
that selected will be.
Example – People recycle paper because they believe it’s important to
conserve resources and take a stand on environmental issues, they believe
that the more efforts they put into recycling the more paper people will
recycle.
It is all about the mental processes regarding the choice or choosing. It
explains the processes that an individual undergoes to make choices.
11. Two Factor
Theory
Proposed by Psychologist Frederick Herzberg in 1959 which states that there
are certain factors in the workplace that cause job satisfaction while a separate
set of factor cause dissatisfaction all of which act independently of each other.
Two factors are:
Motivation – which can encourage employees to work harder
Hygiene – which will cause them unmotivated if they are not present
12. Motivating Factor
Achievement
Recognition
Responsibility
Advancement
Growth
The work itself
Hygiene Factor
Company policies
Supervision
Relationship
Work condition
Salary
Status
Security
14. Intrinsic Motivation
When motivation comes from internal factor to meet
the personal needs is the act of doing something
without any obvious external reward.
For Example – You would be reading a book because
you enjoy reading and have an interest in the story
or subject, rather than reading because you have to
write a report on it to pass a class.
15. Extrinsic Motivation
When motivation comes from external factor that
are given or controlled by others.
For Example – Playing card to win money,
Participate in competition to win.
