in Modern English
Borrowing: Words were borrowed from different languages,
like Spanish, French, Italian.
Thus from French came Garage. From Italian came Confetti.
From Spanish came Bonanza.
Prefix & Suffix: Another method of extending the
vocabulary by applying prefix & suffix to existing words.
Examples: Pre-School, Pre-Heat, Pre-Cool (Prefix)
Fan-Dom, Star-Dom, Soul-Ful, Help-Ful. (Suffix)
3. Self-Explaining Compounds: Another source of new words
its represented on the practice of making self explaining
compounds.
Coinages: A considerable number of new words must be
attributed to deliberate invention.
4. Verb-adverb Combination
Formation of new words by combining a common verb
with an adverb.
Words are formed when you take two different words with
their own completely different meanings & make them
one word with a new meaning .
Example: Keep on (continue), turn over (surrender), put
up with (tolerate)
5. Development of Dictionary
In 19th century, 1857 a Proposal was arranged & issued
by a committee of “Philological society”.
Due to which future dictionary extended.
It was sent to Oxford University for Publication.
Dr Murry was the Editor.
In 1884, First installment was published with latter A
and extended till H in 1900.
6. Dr Murry passed away before completing the task he had
undertaken.
In 1985 the Dictionary was well known by the name/title
(a ned & oed).
By exhibiting the history of words, idioms, various
spelling their changes of meanings.
When historians of English a century or two hence attempt
to evaluate the effect of the (OD oxford dictionary) on the
English language.
