2. English grammar is the way in which meanings are encoded into
wordings in the English language. This includes the structure of
words, phrases, clauses, and sentences, right up to the structure
of whole texts. There are historical, social, cultural and regional
variations of English.
3. English has four major word classes: nouns, verbs, adjectives and adverbs.
They have many thousands of members, and new nouns, verbs, adjectives and
adverbs are often created.
Nouns: are the most common type of word, followed by verbs.
Adjectives: an adjective is a word which describes or limits a substantive.
A verb: refers to an action, event or state
Adverbs: We use adverbs to add more information about a verb, an adjective,
another adverb, a clause or a whole sentence and, less commonly, about a
noun phrase.
4. Speakers of American English generally use the present perfect tense (have/has +
past participle) far less than speakers of British English. In spoken American
English, it is very common to use the simple past tense as an alternative in
situations where the present perfect would usually have been used in British
English.
In British English, collective nouns, (i.e. nouns referring to particular groups of
people or things), (e.g. staff, government, class, team) can be followed by a
singular or plural verb depending on whether the group is thought of as one idea,
or as many individuals, e.g.
5. In the Spanish language, every noun is considered to be either masculine or feminine,
and the articles “the,” el (masculine) or la (feminine), will often accompany the noun to
demonstrate which gender the noun is.
