Why did I choose Internet of Things?
Imagine a world where all your objects of
daily use can communicate with each other.
Your refrigerator will ping you when the
flavoured yoghurt in your fridge is about to
expire. Simultaneously, it will add a note to
your to-do list to purchase yoghurt. It will
also consult your spouse on the flavour of
the yoghurt to put in the purchase list.
Who wouldn’t love such a world? Welcome
to the world of the Internet of Things. And
this is my area of interest.
2. An Introduction
The semantic origin of the expression is
composed by two words and concepts:
“Internet” and “Thing”, where “Internet”
can be defined as “The world-wide network
of interconnected computer networks,
based on a standard communication
protocol, the Internet suite (TCP/IP)”, while
“Thing” is “an object not precisely
identifiable” Therefore, semantically,
“Internet of Things” means “a world-wide
network of interconnected objects uniquely
addressable, based on standard
The term “Internet
of Things” was first
used by Kevin
Ashton in 1999
Characteristics:
• Event Driven
• Ambient Intelligence
• Flexible Structure
• Semantic Sharing
• Complex Access Technologies
Why Internet of Things?
• Dynamic control of industry and
daily life
• Improve the resource utilization
ratio
• Better relationship between
human and nature
• Forming an intellectual entity by
integrating human society and
physical systems
5. Interest Areas
Internet of Things is a prolific area of
work! If given an opportunity I would
prefer to work in the following specific
areas of IoT:
1. Ubiquitous or pervasive computing
technologies and bringing them into
our mainstream daily life
2. Increase the integration of handheld
devices like Android and iOS with
household items
3. Development of wearables like wrist
bands and their application in the
Internet of Things
4. Smart homes where objects in your
house are always connected to its
owner
5. Performing distributed data mining
and analytics from mobile resources
for better understanding of patterns in
the Internet of Things
Thank You
Conclusion
Internet of Things is bound to change
the way we interact with technology.
Our lives shall be intertwined with
every aspects of technology around
us. However, it would be interesting
to observe the degree and
timeframe of embracement of
Internet of Things.
Challenges
The Internet of Things shall face several, very
obvious, challenges:
• Security concerns
• Probable breach of privacy
• Not-so-advanced hardware available
• Difficulty in embracing by public
• Extremely costly to implement
• Still in its nascent stages
