This document analyzes the codes and conventions used across magazine covers and contents pages. It discusses how photographs, colors, logos and layouts are deliberately designed to catch readers' attention and convey meanings. On front covers, celebrities are prominently featured and photographed in ways that make them appear to stare directly at readers. Complementary colors between photographs and other elements help frame the content. Contents pages continue themes from the front covers to maintain continuity and hint at article topics. Photographs, fonts, and other stylistic choices are used strategically to draw readers in and guide them through the magazine.
2. One of the first things
you notice about this
front cover is the
masthead magazine's
company logo, which
allows the customer
to be able to
distinguish it from
other magazines….
In addition the
photographer has
taken a portrait of the
celebrity, which gives
the customer the
impression that she is
staring directly at you,
in a mysterious way…
Also the colours
within the front
cover have been
deliberately chosen
to catch the
customer's
attention, this has
been achieved
through the
celebrities red hair
which has been
contrasted with the
blue eye makeup
she is wearing
contrasting
colours…
FRONT
COVER
There additional
information provided
around the front cover
informs the reader
about other articles
within the magazine,
however without
deterring from the main
feature of the magazine.
This has been achieved
through the use of white
font which contrasts
against the colours of
the celebrity, but in a
way frames her…
3. Again as seen in the
previous magazine
cover the magazines
name takes centre
stage, however the
difference with this
magazine to the
previous one is that it
doesn’t initially take
centre stage, this has
been achieved
through the
complementary
colours chosen and
the fact it is vertical
so it isn’t the first
thing the customer
reads.
The difference
between this
magazine and the
previous is that it is
relying on the fact
that you will be drawn
into looking at this
cover, because of your
recognition of the
celebrity, furthermore
this whole cover is
dedicated to her,
which is why she the
first and foremost part
of the cover you see…
In addition to the
colours used within
the background text,
something more
simple to create more
atmosphere within
this piece is the
makeup used on the
celebrity, in this case
use of neutral tones,
and a hint of gold
helps tie the colour
theme together…
4. CONTENTS
PAGE
Again like the front
covers we still have the
magazine’s logo,
however it no longer
takes centre stage, but
is a mere indication
what magazine the
customer is reading.
The theme for this
contents page is
industrial, with the
sub headings, writing
font, and instead of
writing ‘contents’ they
have put
‘departments’ to
continue this theme,
this is something
which is continued
from the front cover,
and is foreshadowing
the potential subject
on the celebrity
pictured…
Usually within
magazines the front
cover and contents
page share the same
the same theme, to
add continuity to the
magazine. However as
seen in this contents
page the celebrity may
change their stance, or
clothing to provide a
new focal of interest to
the reader…
5. As seen on the front
covers the celebrity is
at the forefront and
grabs your attention ,
achieved in this case
with a oversized
cartoon mushroom
which corresponds
with the colour
scheme of the
celebrity…
Compared to the
other contents page
this title ‘contents’
conflicts and creates
contrast from the
photograph…
In addition to add
further interest to the
contents page the
photographer has
added a sense of
fantasy with the
oversized mushroom,
compared to the size
of the celebrity…
6. In this double
page spread, we
can see that
similar techniques
have been used as
on the front
covers in
particular, when it
comes to the
image of the
celebrity. In this
case like the first
front cover the
photographer has
gone for a head
and should shot
(mid shot). This
gives the
impression that
the celebrity is
looking directly at
run, making the
image more
intimate with the
reader, and also
creates
connotations that
the celebrity is
defiant, and
audacious…
The colour seen in this double spread is something which is reflected on both pages,
with the theme of red, which is a primary colour which makes it very eye-catching
to the reader. Again it also leads the and gives the reader the impression that the
celebrity pictured is dangerous, wild and mysterious; this is connoted through the
choice of colour.
In addition the
text font and
layout again is
designed to
catch the
readers eye, as
this is the main
article within
the magazine.
This has been
achieved
through the
enlarged ‘J’,
which links to
the artists name
indicating that
the article is
about him.
Furthermore
the text has
been broken
down further
through the use
of enlarged
letter of some
of the
paragraphs.
DOUBLE PAGE
Furthermore the
celebrity’s accessories
accentuate the idea and
connotations of mystery
