2. Modern communication media
• Communication: derived from latin word communis. The literal meaning
of the term is to share something.
• Overtime communication has evolved with evolving technology.
• The earlier form of communication includes smoke signals which then
evolved to the use of morse code for military purposes.
• Today the world depends upon virtual modes of communication.
• Some of the major modern forms of communication are
• Live chats
• social media
• instant messanging apps
• video chat
• voice calling
• email
• sms
• text messaging
3. ELECTRONIC VIDEO
• Term video is derived from the latin word ‘videre’
meaning ‘to see’.
• Video is an electronic audio-visual system for preparing
video tapes of programmes and events, which could be
projected through a receiving set with moving images
and synchronized sound.
• In video and television, the images are projected form
within the received set and can be viewed in an ordinary
room, preferably with some lights on.
4. ADVANTAGES OF ELECTRONIC VIDEO
the flexibility of video makes it eminently suitable for use in extension,
particularly for training and motivating the people.
1. Video tapes can be prepared in advance
2. It may be viewed through single receiving set or integrated with
television network
3. can stimulate at present real life situations effectively
4. It increases the viewers control over learning, as programs can be
viewed repeatedly with pauses and replays
5. provides for interaction and analysis of program with the instructor
and fellow viewers
6. TELE TEXT
• Teletext or broadcast teletext is a standard for displaying text and
rudimentary graphics on suitably equipped television sets.
• Teletext is a system that links a computer with a television by which
text and graphic information can be transmitted on a one way basis to
home viewers.
• Indian television join the advance nations in 1985, it started the teletext
known as intex service to telecast the latest news and information on
the stock exchange air lines, railway timings, weather information etc.
• In the system a fix number of pages are broadcast sequentially but
continuously, each page consist of television screen, display of text and
graphic shapes.
7. TELE CONFERENCE
• Definition: it is an aggregation of audio conferencing,
video conferencing, and data conferencing and includes
multiple participants in a live real time session.
Types:
1. Audio conference
2. Audio graphic conference
3. Video conference
4. Computer conference
8. TYPES
1. Audio conference
• involves transmission of voice only which are amplified at each end by
the speaker system.
2. Audio graphic conference
• employs voice plus graphic display capability.
• The most frequently used graphic supplement is a facsimile machine,
which transmit electronically and reproduces at remote location
anything that can be written or typed on paper.
9. TYPES
3. Video conference:
• combines audio and video to provide voice communications
• video images can be one way video/two way audio or two way
video/two way audio.
4. Computer conference:
• uses telephone lines to connect two or more computer and
modems.
• Anything that can be done on computer can be sent over the lines.
11. LIMITATIONS
Initial cost is very high
Difficult for complex interpersonal communication
Socializing is less than a face to face meeting
Audience expectation broadcast quality
presentation often leads to productions that impress
but do not instruct.
12. Computer Assisted Instruction
• It is the natural outgrowth of the application of the principle of
programmed learning.
• The computer can store a massive amount of organised information,
which can be made available for individualised instruction to meet the
need of the particular learner(s).
• CAI can be arranged for teaching up to forty thousand learners,
simultaneously.
• Used in all types of teaching learning programs
• CAI can be used to provide drill, practice and simulated experiences to
enhance the efficiency and performance of the workers.
13. Computer technology
• Computer is one of the powerful devices for storing and processing
information
• Word processor and lazor printers are increasing being used in
communication centres and printing houses for printing agricultural
extension publications.
• Computers via satellite can take pictures of clouds to accurately
forecast weather conditions
• With remote sensing techniques can accurately work out land use, area
under forest
• All such devices and others in the pipeline, have a great potential in
agricultural communication.
14. Implications
• Modern communication media helps in promotion of new
agricultural technologies, process and seeds which results in
better yield.
• Experts can communicate to farmers and farmers can connect to
scientist to solve problem related to crops.
• These technologies will also help to make agriculture more
sustainable
Future scope
• Government agencies developing mobile apps to provide all
necessary information to farmer (m-krishi)
