INTRODUCTION
An ISBT is the place where state or interstate buses stop to pick up and drop off passengers. It is larger
than a bus stop,whichisusuallysimplyaplace onthe roadside,where busescanstop.It isintendedasa
terminal station for a number of routes, or as a transfer station where the routes continue.
It serves as a terminus and departure point for both commuter bus routes as well as for long-distance
interstate routes. ISBT’S are provided with many amenities including shops & other commercial
activities.
Aim
To develop the design solution of the project of isbt at,varanasi proposed by the govt. Agency -awas
bandhu .u.p & is been look after by varanasi development authority.
Need of Project-Inter State Bus Terminal (Isbt)
The city accommodatesa total of about 20 lakhpopulation. The cityof Varanasi isvisitedby
large numberof intra-state populationalmosteveryday.Fora city of thissize andnature, public
transportbecomesvital,notonlyincateringtothe local commutingneeds,butalsofor
domesticandinterstate commuters.
Varanasi has only one interstate bus terminal in the city located near Cantt. railway station in
the heart of the city. Entire heavy motor vehicle (HMV) (public carriers) traffic flow passes
through this terminal creating a chaos in the area.
As the existing capacity of the bus terminal is not adequate enough, presently the buses are
parkedinnearbyarea and alsoon the GT road passing by. This narrows the road and blocks the
smooth flow of the traffic. Further due to its nearness to cannt railway station the area also
takes the pressure of the rail passengers apart from the local traffic flow.
Therefore It becomes necessary to develop new Interstate bus terminal on the outskirt of the
city to stop the entry of HMV(public carriers) inside the city. This will also deviate the local
passenger vehicles (Auto rickshaw) from the existing route easing the movement of intercity
traffic.
Scope and objective of project
To develop an interstate bus terminal which is capable enough to cater the present growing
traffic needs of its own city & the traffic coming from other states as well.
To analyze and give solutions to the problems that the city is facing in present & in coming
future years
To develop the facilities & the amenities at the terminal which could serve the commuters
coming over there in the best possible way.
