Effects

The Reconquista took hold in Spain
The power of monarchs increased
A money economy developed
Trade increased and expanded
4. Islam flourished from Spain to India and
spread ideas, goods, and culture
▪ The Islamic SeljukTurks extended their power over the
Holy Land
Pope Urban II asked Christian knights to fight
theTurks to allow Christian pilgrims access to
Jerusalem
▪ Urban II hoped the Crusades would unify the Roman and
Byzantine churches against the Muslims
5. The Crusades lasted a total of 200 years
▪ 1st Crusade- Christian knights retook Jerusalem in 1099
▪ 2nd Crusade-In 1187 Muslim leader Salah al-Din retook
the holy city
▪ 3rd Crusade- Christians failed to recapture Jerusalem,
city was reopened to Christian pilgrims
▪ 4th Crusade- Christians fought one another, Muslims
took the final Christian outpost
