Have you ever heard this phrase? What does it mean to you?
What does it make you think about? How do you respond to this
statement? What is it expressing?

• A work of writing may have more than one tone.
• Tone should not be confused with mood.
• Mood is the general atmosphere created by the author's words.
• Mood is the feeling the reader gets from reading the words.
• Authors set a tone or mood by conveying an emotion through word choice.
• Word choice is known as diction.

What Does the author hope to accomplish?
What is his or her reason for writing the piece?
This comes before all the others because this determines what form the writing will
take.
The diction and the tone reveal the author’s purpose to the reader.
