4. We used google film search mainly to research
examples of films and also examples of
production and distribution companies. This
gave very clear examples so it was very useful.
It was very simple and quick and easy to
use to find what we were looking for and
there were also lots of information to help
us.
The only problem was that there was so
much information that it took a long time
to go through it all
5. This technology had a whole variety of fonts
so we were spoilt for choice. We had to find
the perfect font for our sub genre so we went
for ‘optimus princeps’ as it looks slightly
creepy but simple.
The website also has filters
for horror fonts so it was
easier to narrow it down
Downloading was also very
simple and easy to use so it was
easily accessible.
6. ArtOfTheTitle was used to look at
past films OTS'. We analysed the
OTS' and used ideas from them to
help create our own. It was very
useful as there was a huge collection
of all genres of films, including
horror.
Thanks to the easy screenshotting
tool on the Apple Mac, we were able
to take screenshots of the OTS
whenever we needed too. This was
very helpful as we could insert them
straight into the blogs for the
assignments or into a powerpoint for
example.
7. YOUGOV was very helpful during the
assignments involving audiences and
demographics as it gives us lots of
information of key demographics from
past films. We looked at different
horror films and there genres to give
us an idea of what we would like our
tagret audience to be.
We also looked at the psychographics
of horror audiences to see what their
lifestyle and personality is like. This
helped with the research and planning
assignments.
8. This is a very easy piece of technology to use, mainly due to
the fact that it is one of the most common and popular
pieces of software on the market. PowerPoint allows you to
create multiple slides in a single document, which can be
easily edited at any time. We used this for our research and
planning as we knew we would want a lot of images and
screenshots with annotations. This technology allowed us
to do this efficiently and effectively. It is also beneficial as
you can look up images straight from the software, this can
save a lot of time as you don’t have to keep changing tabs.
One negative with powerpoint is that it is relatively basic
and can sometimes be a little bit boring, however this can
be easily changed by adding a background or a range of
colours.
9. blogger is a very useful piece of software for research and
planning as there is such a wide range of things you can do on
it. For example, you can simply write on the blog itself or you
can embed a number of things such as: powerpoints, slideshare,
youtube videos and other similar technologies. It is also
extremely useful as you can easily track everything you have
done. This is very beneficial as you can quickly go back and edit
something that you have done a long time ago by finding very
quickly. Similar to powerpoint, it is very easy to insert pictures
and links, this is very useful for research and planning.
There is only really one disadvantage in that there is a limited
number of templates, however this doesn’t affect the
productivity, just the appearance.
10. YouTube allows to search precisely and
quickly, which allowed us to find exactly
what we wanted. It was particularly
useful when searching for sounds as we
could just use a few key words and find
the perfect sound. Some of the videos
couldn’t be converted to MP3, which was
a big negative as it set us back a lot of
time. Also, there is a lot of videos, in
which we had to spend a lot of time to
find the exact one we wanted.
11. Pearl and Dean is meant to help you
find what the demographics were
for each genre of film. For us, it
provided basic information as a lot
of cannibal films are outdated and
therefore they do not have the
latest information on them. It wasn't
that useful because as I said, a lot of
cannibal films were in the 1980s,
and therefore there was not
information for a lot of them.
12. We used this to convert youtube
clips for sound. It was very easy
to use and the quality of the clip
was still the same.
Nearly every youtube clip can be
converted so we didn't have to
compromise when we picked the clip we
wanted
13. We used the fade and blur effect on the
text which matched the genre and
conventions we were going for.
This was used from final cut pro x and we
used it for every credit.
We experimented with a lot of transitions
for the font and the it still worked well for
the font we wanted.
The only problem is that it can take a long
time to render
14. This blade tool (found in Final Cut Pro
X) was used in the post production of
our OTS. This was the most used tool
in the whole of the editing. We used
it to cut the clips up to delete excess
filming and to create media effects
such as match on action and shot
reverse shot.
The tool was very easy to access as it
has its own button on the main
screen of the software and after a few
sessions of using it, it became very
easy to use and master.
15. We used the Iphone6s as the camera for our
Opening Title Sequence. We had two of these
incase one broke or ran out of battery however it
was also very useful as we could use multiple
angles for the exact same shot to create good
match on action.
The phone has one of the best camera's for all
phones as it has 4K quality. It matches the
cameras used by the rest of the class. It was ideal
for our piece as it meant we could use lots of
POV shots and moving shots however it was very
hard to keep the camera stable as we didn’t have
a tripod.
We got inspiration from the award winning film
'Tangerine' which was shot on the Iphone 5s with
an anamorphic lens adapter.
16. This is an extremely popular form of technology that
everyone is aware off, however not everyone takes
advantage of the mass of people that have an account
on youtube. When doing the sound for our OTS I found
that youtube was actually the best place to get most of
the music and various different sound effects. This is
because of how many people were showcasing and
offering various pieces of horror music that is possible
to download. For example, if you were to type in horror
ambient music you would get 70,000+ results. Not only
did youtube provide us with a numerous amount of
sounds but it also has a lot of tutorials on there that can
be very useful when learning to colour correct for
example.
17. There is a wide variety of transitions that are on offer on final
cut pro, with each one having an individual reason for it to be
used. The one we most commonly used would probably be
the dissolve during our temporal elipses shots. This is because
it gives the effect that time is passing. The transitions are also
very easy to use and edit around. For example it is extremely
easy an straight forward to lengthen or shorten the clips, this
was helpful to us as I had to extend them In order to get the
best effect during the temporal elipses shots.
A disadvantage with the transitions would be that it can
sometimes be hard to add a transition if the clip is too small
as you have to zoom in quite a few times and play around
with it until you get the perfect placement and timing.
18. Photoshop is a fairly advanced image
manipulation program. We used this for
our ident, which can be seen at the start of
our final draft. It is somewhat simple to
navigate and use as all of the tools were
labelled. For some of the group, however,
it was fairly difficult as they had never
used it before but overall it was an easy
process.
19. We used the colour board
from within Final Cut Pro in
order to desaturate our clips
and make them look a little
bit more scary. This was
successful, and it was a fairly
easy process to get a hang of.
However it is a very tedious
process as every clip has
different colouring to it and
therefore had to be
individually colour graded
which takes a lot of time.
20. We used this powerpoint for question 6
of our evaluation as it provides a clear
and visible platform for the information.
There can be themes adjusted for your
genre and multiple slides so a lot of
information can be laid out in a clear
format.
21. We used screencast for Evaluation
question 7 in which we had to
record ourselves talking about our
final OTS draft. It was easy to
download and access however
once on it, it was slightly confusing
in how it would fit onto the screen
and to get it started.
It was a good facecam recorder as
it was adjustable which meant we
could easily fit the whole group
into the shot.
22. I didn’t really like using powtoon at all, hence why it was only
used for one blog post out of every single one. We used it for
evaluation question 3 in which we spoke about who would
distribute our media product. Firstly, I think the layout of
powtoon loos very childish but at the same time is very
complicated as everything Is dotted around the place, making
it hard and stressfull to carry out very easy things. Another
problem with powtoon is the text boxex, they often
overlapped randomly making it very hard to manoeuvre them.
Speaking about moving them, at some points they only
seemed to move one way at a time, and sometimes they
wouldn’t really move at all as they just lagged around the
screen.
The benefits with using powtoon for our evaluation is that it
seemed like a quick process to get through, it was also
relatively easy to share and embed onto our blog.
23. Emaze is a useful presentation
creation website. We used it for
one of our evaluation questions
and and a few other
assignments. What we liked
about it was how simply laid
out it was, and also how simple
it was to have the presentation
looking nice. We didn’t use it all
of the time because there are
many other options which all
have their unique features that
we required at the time.
