2. Light Writing
Light writing is done by setting the shutter speed to about 5
or 6 seconds depending on what you wish to draw. Finding a
room big and dark enough is hard. As you can see in the first
image that the background is actually visible. I think when
the background is black it makes the light stand out better
but having the background visible could add to some
concepts and images.
Different coloured lights add more focus points. They can
help you tell what the image is but the best quality is that
they can make the image more eye catching.
I found out that you can draw objects (like the smiley face) by
turning the light off and on. It’s hard to get depth with the light
as it all looks 2D. But you can get little angles of depth if you
hold the camera at the right angle a draw towards and away
from the camera with big movements.
3. I like this image because it shows movement well.
Most light writing is 2D with hardly any depth.
It looks like
a bounce so
a this could
be edited to
look like
skipping
stones are
an animal,
like a deer,
prancing.
There is a break in the second bounce but I don’t think it
is that
4. Harris Shutter
The Harris shutter technique is when you take three pictures,
all different colours – red, green and blue. You can take the
picture of the same thing in the same position or you can
change the angle and make the layers stand out and add
depth.
It is a good way to capture movement as it takes three
different images and layers them. The brighter the subject
the stronger the colours are. The top image is of a light so it
is a very bright subject, this is why the colours stand out so
much. The blinds were closed so the only light was coming
from this light.
For the second image I moved my eye and the camera. This
is why there is a smaller, more closed eye, where my eye lid
should be. Layering is a good way to manipulate images and
make surreal scenes look real.
The bottom image I took to see if the effect works well with
brightly coloured thing. The machine is lit so I think this is
way it worked so well. The crushed ice behind the can has
worked well with the effect creating a oily metallic look.
5. This is the best image as it shows movement, the
main reason behind the Harris shutter technique
I was moving
along with
the people in
the image so
it has the
double
movement
effect. You
don’t just
have the
movement of
the people
but the
movement of
angles too.
The change in colour is obvious. The layers aren’t too close to
each other for them to merge exactly. They are further apart so it
won’t get confused as a 3D image.
6. Scanography
Scanography is taking photographs using a scanner. It is a
good way to manipulate and twist images. The way you take
these is that you follow the light of the scanner as it goes
along.
Using reflective surfaces could create some good effects as
it will reflect the light. The use of hands are the most
common way to achieve these effects.
It can be quite dangerous if you use peoples faces as the
light can be blinding. In the image of my face my hair is
covering my eyes and I also have them closed. However the
scanner I was using wasn’t that bright.
The bottom image is of a water bottle. I rolled it along with
the light and stood it up towards the end. This image didn’t
work too well because the top of the scanner was open. The
lid needs to be closed to get the full effect of the scan. There
is too much light if the scanner is open.
