Listening is the ability to accurately
receive and interpret messages in the
communication process.
Listening involves identifying the
sounds of speech and processing them
into words and sentences.

 The listening process involves five
stages:

◂ Understanding
◂ Evaluating
◂ Remembering
◂ Responding
INTRODUCTION TO LISTENING
 Listening is key to all effective
communication.
 When we listen, we use our ears to
receive individual sounds and we use
our brain to convert these into
messages that mean something to us.
LISTENING PROCESS:ACTIVE
AND PASSIVE LISTENING
 Listening is an active process in which a
conscious decision is made to listen to
and understand the messages of the
speaker.
 Listeners should remain neutral and non-
judgmental.
ACTIVE LISTENING
 Active listening not only means focusing
fully on the speaker but also actively
showing verbal and non-verbal signs of
listening.
Signs of Active Listening
◂ Smile
◂ Eye contact
◂ Posture
PASSIVE LISTENING
 Passive listening is one-way
communication where the receiver
doesn’t provide feedback or ask questions
and may or may not understand the
sender’s message.
PASSIVE LISTENING
 Passive listening without reacting:
Allowing someone to speak, without
interrupting.
 Not doing anything else at the same time.

of and understand what another person is
saying.
