What’s Next
I want to start with file-level restore from the Management Console. Most of the backup and restore functionality is available on the agent level and during the last year we have been working to bring most of that functionality to the web console. Two features that have been requested a lot is the ability to view backup storage and restore offline computers. So we added a new tab to the computer management side-panel called Backup Storage. Now you can view all backups right from the web console even if the computer is offline.
You can also pick a file or a folder you want to restore from from this Backup Storage section and downloaded to your local computer or to the source endpoint if it’s available online. This will start a quick restore application that will create and run a restore job for the selected files and folders. Also you can launch a Quick Restore application on a storage level and select multiple files and folders to restore.
POLL: Have you tried Quick Restore already?
Yes, and I like it
Yes, but it needs improvement
No, I don't need it
No, I didn't know it exist
No. I don't have MSP360 account yet
Another great feature that we added recently is Password Recovery Service. We have a lot of requests to our support team from customers who can not restore their backups because encryption password doesn’t work. We all humans and we can forget encryption password. Especially if you have dozens or hundreds of endpoints . You might want to use the same encryption password across all desktops and servers, but that is definitely a bad idea. So that’s why we introduced Password Recovery Service. It helps you recover encryption passwords in case you lose or forget them. Once enabled we will generate a pair of keys for your account.
One we will store on our end, the other one you will need to keep at your end. In case you forget one of your encryption passwords you can use this key to recover any encryption key on your system. This feature is only available for root administrators and can not be controlled by sub administrators.
Another security enhancement that I’d like to talk about is Two Factor Authentication. We strongly recommend using 2FA with your MSP360 account and until recent update in January we only supported 3rd-party authentication applications that require you to enter 6 digit codes every time you need to login or perform one of the critical actions. Now you can use MSP360 mobile application for Two Factor Authentication. No need to enter annoying 6 digit codes anymore you can confirm your login or all any sensitive action with just one click on your smartphone
The other important update that I want to bring up is Forever Forward Incremental for the New Backup Format. This format improves performance and speed of backups and restore. It also comes with synthetic full, restore points, GFS retention, and many more. But the main downside until recently that stopped many of our customers to start using it was storage requirements. Depending on you configuration you should have at least 2 full backups on storage. Late last year we introduced Forever Incremental and it allows to save about 50% of storage space on average compared to a traditional Recurring (Incremental) approach, because you need to keep only one full backup followed by a series of increments.
It also saves you time and bandwidth. With Forever Incremental you need to upload full backup only once. All the future uploads will be just increments. New full backup sets will be synthesized on the cloud storage itself. We also thought about customers who use cost effective cloud storage services such as Wasabi and AWS, which often come with minimum storage duration. To simplify the configuration of the backup plan and to avoid extra payments for such users we developed a feature called “Intelligent Retention”. The product will check you storage destination and if it has a minimum storage duration aka early deletion fee it will adjust your schedule and retention settings accordingly to avoid extra charges. POLL
How to convert to FFI? You can edit existing backup plans to enable new scheduling. It will be applied automatically. If you need to convert multiple backup plans from Legacy to New Backup Format this now can be done with CLI. Reach out to your dedicated Customer Success Manager or Account Manager for assistance.
POLL: Do you use Forever Forward Incremental?
Yes.
No, but I plan to start
No. I use New Backup Format and Recurring (Incremental) schedule with several full backups
No. I don't use New Backup Format at all
No. I don't have MSP360 account
Let’s talk about Ransomware and how MSP360 helps to protect? First of all New Backup Format comes with Object Lock or Immutability for Backblaze B2, Amazon S3, and Wasabi. It’s now enabled by default when you create your storage destination. So make sure you use it if you wish to make 100% sure your data stays safe. Once data is locked on the storage nothing can be changed or deleted. Be careful when configuring retention settings with object lock as when data is locked you have to pay for the storage for the specified period.
Another way to protect from any kind of Malware and Ransomware in particular is to use modern endpoint protection solution with threat prevention technology. We have integrated with DeepInstinct a leading endpoint protection and threat prevention solution to help our customers leverage this most recent technology in the EDR space right from the MSP360 Management Console.
Our UX/UI team is also working a lot to improve usability of MSP360. We introduced new navigation and separate computer management pages for RMM and Backup. A lot of performance improvements has been made to the new pages. If you would like to try new navigation talk to your AM or CSM to enable it for your account.
POLL: Do you have the new menu in your account already?
Yes.
No. Please enable it for my account
No. I prefer the old menu
No. I don't have an account
New Domains page with details for M365/Google Backup. Email notifications for backups and restores. Export to PST. Automatic data cleanup on domain deletion or storage destination change.
Now I want to take some time to talk how our RMM and Connect products evolved during the last year. Our dev team worked hard to bring the product to a new level. We have filled it with all the required features to meet our customers requirements. That includes:
All platform support, including macOS and Linux support
Ability to create and schedule execution of different group actions, including mass Windows updates, a configuration of Windows update policies, 3rd-party software deployment and removal, and script execution to automate any maintenance you need on endpoints.
We have also added a script library with some preconfigured most popular scripts. You can create and save your scripts in that library as well.
Alerting and reporting have been improved. We added many new alerts covering most of the required cases. And you can customize when alerts should trigger.
Scheduled reports now include a general software inventory report or a more in-depth version. The computer inventory report is also available.
SNMP monitoring. A feature that our customers asked a lot about is finally available. Scan the network for the devices you want to keep track of.
And this one is my favorite - new browser-based version of Connect. It allows connecting to the required endpoints from the Management Console without running additional software. It has been built on a new protocol that has also been integrated with the agent-based version of Connect. This new protocol brings much better performance, connection quality, and simplifies the whole process of working with remote endpoints. If you own a backup license, you can use the browser-based version of Connect free of charge. Give it a try!
