My first choice of product is an Empire magazine. This is a film based magazine filled
with film reviews and news on different film related ideas. On the front of the
magazines, there is a large bold image of the Joker from Batman which clearly stands
out to the eye. The idea of a large image will attract the target audience as the
audience will be able to spot their favourite film characters before anything else which
will automatically attract their attention towards to the magazine. The front of the
cover also fits the theme of the joker very well as its colour scheme matches his
renowned stereotypical colours. As well as that, the Joker cover line matches the
theme of the joker with its complex and unique style. The fact that it is also quite
messy clearly symbolises exactly what the joker is none for. The Masthead is easily
visible because of its prominent style and distinct colour. The idea that the “P” in
Empire is not visible shows how established the company name is.
The inside of the magazine is quite a basic design which predominately focuses on the
images of the different Batman's. This is because the page includes a significant
amount of text therefore the large mages are there to balance the proportions out.
Images are also a good way to attract the readers attention when flipping through the
magazine and give the reader a visual to support the text.

My second choice of product to research is a GQ magazine. The publication focuses on
fashion, style, and culture for men. The front cover of my chosen product is a very
modern and mature aesthetic. This attracts the target audience of the magazine
perfectly as the stereotypical reader of GQ is a mature and stylish man. The magazine
includes a very large image of the front of Jamie Dornan. The creator of the magazine
has done this to catch peoples attention as they walk past as it easily catches the eye.
As well as that, the idea of having a famous and relevant actor like Jamie Doran on the
front will increase the sales of the magazine. This is because the magazine was clearly
released when The Fifty Shades films were popular therefore, having Duran on the
front will attract a wider range of buyers. The Masthead of the magazine is positioned
in front of every other layer around it. This is to promote the products brand and keep
the brand in mind at all times whilst reading the magazine. The masthead is also very
clean and professional therefore corresponding with the theme of everything else on
the front page.
The inside of the magazine maintains the mature and modern theme of the front page
which allows the magazine to keep its aesthetic and stay persistent. Again, the inside
of the magazine concentrates on the image as it is the largest aspect. Although the is a
large amount of text, the target audience will want to see see a visual of the fashion
and style ideas they are reading about therefore, the technique of including a large
image works perfectly.

My third choice of magazine is Match Of The Day. This is a football news and fan
magazine targeted at the younger generation. The front of the magazine is covered in
colour. The vibrant theme of the cover will highly attract the target audience as the
younger generations attention will always be attracted to colour therefore when in the
shops, they will spot Match Of The Day first. The Masthead is bold and visible however,
some of the pages components cover the front of the masthead. This symbolizes and
recognizable how established the brand is. As well as that, all the information on the
front page is pushed out of the page into your face. This is to maintain the target
audiences attention as they wont be able to escape it easily. The fact that the cover
includes a large number of images conveys how young the target audience are as they
want to maintain their attention and children are always interest in looking at images.
The inside of Match Of The Day shares many similarities to the front cover as it filled
with colour and includes many large and eye catching images. However, it includes a
larger amount of text. This is because the front as to attract the reader and suck them
in hence why it includes short bold text and very large images. The inside includes
more text because the reader will have already been sucked into the magazine
therefore, they can niw began with giving them useful and interesting information
which allows you to have to pay more attention.
8. Research Analysis
• What common features do the researched products have?
The similarities between my researched products is that they all includes large images on the
front cover. This is to attract their target audience to the magazine as it will show a visual to
catch the attention of the magazines audience. For example, the Joker will target film and
comic book fans. The front cover of every magazine also foreshadows the rest of the magazine.
This is a good technique as it maintains a common theme therefore, securing the interest of
the target audience.
• What aspects of the research will you include within your
on work?
The aspects I will include in my product will be the fact that I will include a large image on the
front cover. This is because it will then attract the attention of my target audience. As well as
that, because most other popular magazines use this technique I know that it is aesthetically
pleasing and it just overall a good technique to use whilst designing.
