Media Studies EvaluationMatt O’Neill
In creating my own magazine, I have tried to use as many of the codes of conventions that professional magazine producers use in order to make my magazine look as professional as possible. An example I have used is to make the Masthead as big and recognisable as possible in order to create a sort of brand that people will recognise and immediately know the magazine by its font and colours. Also I have included a selling line underneath the title. The aim of the selling line is to give the reader an idea of the content of the magazine without going in to too much detail therefore I have made my selling line as informative as I can without using too many words. I have carefully chosen the background image for the magazine that follows the codes and conventions and also ignores some of them in order to create an interesting look. The picture being tilted appears odd but adds action to the page. The counter tilting cover line also adds to the image of the front cover.
My magazine represents a young working class social group by using features that they can relate to such as reviews on bands they are likely to know and also using images with clothing that they would wear. I have also included a competition that gives the readers a chance to win clothing from a popular American brand. The review of the festival is also aimed at a certain audience as it attracts people that are interested in the music related to the festival therefore metal and pop fans wouldn’t be attracted as much as the fans of my chosen festival. The choice of bands, themes and overall image of the magazine would immediately persuade people that aren't fans of the style of clothing or music that the magazine advertises that it isn't for them.
My magazine relates to magazines such as NME and also has a unique theme that no other well known magazine covers. Therefore the magazine could be distributed along side the top magazine as it offers something that other magazines do not.
My target audience would be a fan of the music genre that is played at the Leeds festival as that particular festival features heavily in my magazine. I have researched my target audience and know the bands that are popular at the moment and also the clothing image that is represented by these people. The bands that are included in the magazine are those that have been suggested in my research and that fans would be interested in reading about.
I aimed to attract my audience by giving a review of an festival that involved comedy and also a first hand experience of the festival itself. Therefore people would be interested in reading it whilst also getting an idea of what the festival is like. I also advertised a competition to win clothes of a brand that is very popular within that particular social group.
During this project I have learnt a range of techniques to use on Adobe Photoshop. I have learnt how to enhance a photograph by using bevel and emboss in order to make the picture look more clear or colourful. I have learnt techniques such as removing red eye and also spot healing.I have also learnt analysing techniques whilst I was getting my research for the magazine. I have learnt what the process of thirds is, I have learnt why colour and appearance is important and I have also learnt the technical language that individual item on a magazine has such as masthead and coverlines.
In creating the magazine I have firstly learnt how much the quality of the background image effects the overall look of the magazine. Also I have learnt roughly how much text is acceptable on the cover and also I have learnt how to arrange things such as a contents page and also a double page spread.
