Case Study: Social Bullying
Social bullying, also known as relational or emotional bullying, is a form of
bullying that focuses on damaging a person's social reputation and
relationships. This case study examines a real-life scenario of social bullying
within a school environment, and will ask you to explore its impact on the
victim, the role of bystanders, and strategies for prevention and
intervention.
Case study
Sima is a 14-year-old learner in Grade 8. He became the target
of social bullying by a group of classmates.
The bullies systematically spread rumours, exclude Sima from
social activities, and manipulate friendships to isolate Sima. This
campaign of social bullying has persisted for several weeks,
causing significant distress to Sima.
Discussion points
1. Discuss the impact on Sima, the victim. Consider the following emotional and psychological
aspects in your discussions:
o low self-esteem
o emotional distress
o academic performance
2. What role can bystanders (friends and peers) play in this situation? In your discussion, consider
the following:
o active bystanders
o empathy and support
o bystander intervention programmes
3. Think of some intervention strategies for this situation. Consider these aspects:
o school staff
o educational programmes
o counselling support
