Young people are overwhelmed these days for options for their future? How can we help them progress through this minefield into a happy and fulfilling career? Surely narrowing their options through careers advice is limiting - particularly as many of the careers we think of today probably won't exist in the future and many we haven't thought of, will. Helping young people to understand themselves better is the way forward into developing young adults who are confident decision makers, clear on what makes them tick and able to interact with others in this fast changing world around us.

Editor's Notes
Introduction – 1min
Well done for making it this far through the evening. I bet by now you’re feeling a bit overwhelmed with all the information you’ve been gathering and the ideas that have been thrown at you? Well – I hope this session will be a bit of light relief.
I’m here to talk because I’m a qualified Myers Briggs practitioner and I want to share how this personality profiling tool can better prepare young people for life beyond school
Let’s start with a video
Video about how technology is changing the types of jobs that exist
Video – 5min
So my question to you is – why are we trying to give careers advice to you when half the jobs that you will be applying for in the future don’t even exist yet?
I’m not here to give you another option as to where to direct your career. As we’ve just seen – some of the things that you young people will be doing in the future haven’t even been thought of yet.
So as parents – I bet you’re wondering how you can help your young person on to this next cruicial stage in their life? And some of you may have had some challenging conversations with your teenagers where your idea of what they want to do or how they are going about it differs hugely from what you think.
And you young people here – I bet you’re potentially feeling overwhelmed with the options available to you – wondering if you’ve chosen the right courses for A-level or GCSE and perhaps have had some career advice that’s recommended you become a doctor, teacher, accountant or maybe even a dustbin man! You’re also approaching adulthood and wanting to make the decisions for yourself.
Let me introduce myself – My name is Liz Davies. So in the dim and distant past – I went on to University after school. Anyone want to have a guess what subject I studied at University?? So since then –I’ve had a variety of jobs in both engineering and business and most recently ended my career in a blue chip company in a senior management position for P&G. In my spare time I’ve qualified as a youth worker and work for charity called The Shine Project which works with teenage girls providing skills in communication, relationship and generally developing self esteem.
SO – I’ve had many years’ experience of developing others through coaching, mentoring and team work.
What have I learnt – over the years?
I’m here to offer you something a bit different that goes beyond recommended job titles and is a tool that can better prepare you for life beyond school.
Which brings me back to Myers Briggs – this is a Personality profiling tool used by 79% of all FTSE 100 companies to raise something called Emotional Intelligence. It recognises that people are different – and therefore interact, communicate, make decisions, handle stress in different ways
Wouldn’t it be fantastic to be able to offer this widely recognised tool to you as young people to prepare you for the workplace of the future that may not even exist yet??
I believe that using the Myers Briggs tool to understand yourself and then working on how to apply it to varying situations like
- Effective communication, decision making, stress management and yes – even what type of career would suit you, is an extremely empowering way to look at life beyond school.
Could you all sit up straight?? I like to have people sitting up straight and attentive when they are listening to me!
Now – could everyone fold their arms? Ok just relax in that position for a minute. Now – unfold your arms and refold them the other way around.
How did that feel??
No right or wrong – just one way feels more natural, takes less energy, less thinking power.
And this is what we mean by preferences. Myers Briggs looks at 4 of these preferences and concludes with an overall type and for all of you clever mathematicians out there you may have already worked out that with any combination of 4 preferences who can end up with 16 different types.
Tool to assess preferences in the way you behave
It is NOT
Intelligence IQ
Performance
Maturity - Trauma
Emotions - Psychiatric Disturbances
What makes you feel revitalised? This looks at your preference for extraversion or introversion.
I often think of the difference as that between a solar powered robot vs a battery powered robot. A solar powered robot gets their energy from the sun and external influences (other people, activities, talking things out) A battery powered robot gains its energy from its internal power supply (needs time for reflection, space on their own, needs to think things through)
Remember E I is not about sociability or social confidence.
Line – put yourself on the line according to where your preference is
OK – so I’m going to split you into 3 groups (people who have put themselves at the extraversion end of the line, People in the middle and people at the introversion end of the line) – I would like you to discuss and tell me what your ideal holiday would look like. 5mins
Feedback
Lots of talking from Es
Lots of thinking from Is
Ideal holiday Es with people
Ideal holiday Is with themselves or one or two close friends
A picture that might appeal to your preference..
So to summarise

Action and benefit
Parents – I want to encourage you to fill out this form so that I will be able to work with your young person to enable them to discover the depths of their personality and be better prepared for life beyond school
So young people – I would really encourage you to discover the depths of your personality so that you set yourself apart from your peers and find the path that will give you most fulfilment in your career.
I have 5 mins now for Questions? Who has the first question?
One thing I frequently get asked is – I’ve done my Myers Briggs personality profile. I thought it was good at the time. But now I don’t even remember my 4 letters – what’s the point? I would say –
There’s lots of these types of things that you can do on line. But let me assure you –this is about not only understanding your personality preferences but being able to apply it to all sorts of life skills, like how you make decisions, how you handle stress as well as what type of environment you work best in
and create a meaningful plan uniquely for them, based on their personality type, values, giftedness, work interests, and more. I will help you as parents by working with your emerging adult by helping them be more motivated about their future and better prepared for leaving home.
