2. I found the students work I have analyzed on OCR Media
Weebly. I am un-aware of what school the student attended or
there name.
3. I really like the simple and obvious colour
scheme used for the front cover, the
black background really helps the red
masthead and white cover lines and puffs
pop off the page.
I'm not sure whether the model on the
front cover was chosen because of her
hair colour or if the magazines colour
scheme was built up around the model
but it looks very professional how
everything ties together.
The picture is a medium close up. This
allows the reader to see what clothes the
model is wearing and the pose she is
striking.
The main masthead is centered on the torso
of the model as to not obstruct her face. The
main masthead is red and white. I like the
use of two different colours as it helps show
that it is the main masthead for the article
inside.
The magazine includes a buzz word, this is
the red banner with exclusive written on it.
This catches the readers eye or any passing
potential customer. This is a creative way of
drawing the readers attention to different
parts of the cover.
In the top left hand corner going down are
the cover lines linking to articles inside the
magazine. These may not be the main article
but they are still a feature inside the
magazine, there purpose is to again inform.
However I would make mine a bit bigger as
they are quite small here.
The magazine has a barcode in the
bottom right hand corner indicating that it
is not a free magazine. Above the
barcode is the price, date issued and a
web address of the magazine.
One thing I really do like is the name of
the magazine, It is clever as it is an
anagram but the anagram also spells out
the genre of music the magazine covers,
this helps the reader remember the name
of the magazine but also adds depth to
the publication and shows thought has
been put in.
Facebook and Twitter addresses at the top gives the reader another way to interact with the magazine. The model is breaking the
fourth wall by looking directly at the camera, I like this as the person is looking directly at the reader encouraging them to buy
4. The contents page spreads over
two pages. This prevents the
contents from being to compacted
together and looking a bit jumbled.
The pages are separated to two
categories, Features and Regulars.
This is a good way to show the
reader where the usual columns are
and where the exclusive or one off
articles are. It acts as a simple
breakdown for the magazine, a
feature I may implement in some
way when it comes to mine.
The pictures are spaced out well
and don't give too much away. The
numbers on the picture refer to the
page number of that the article is
on.
The name of the magazine is at the
top of each page this is a nice
touch, many magazines also do
this so it isn't an original idea.
The page numbers are at the
bottom corners of the page along
with the date published and the
website address. This is commonly
done but I still like it and will try and
implement it in my contents page.
I really like the advert for the magazine subscription, it acts as a space filler. However in other magazines from students I have looked
at they do not have this. It makes it a unique feature and again I may try and take ideas from this sort of advertising.
The colour scheme for the contents page is sort of in step with the front cover but it is missing the dominant black theme. This
might be because the black front cover was a one off and only applied to the front cover picture, however with just the red and
white it can look a bit bare. This is only my opinion mind. I do like the blend in black and red, with the page numbers being in red
and the anchor being written in black. It helps separate the numbers and writing. But also find a page number quickly.
5. In the double page spread the
black, white and red theme is
back as it was absent in the
contents page. Just like my
comments on the front cover the
black background really helps the
text jump off the pages especially
with the text being red and white.
The article begins with a drop
capital. As well as looking good it
tells the reader where to start
from. The headline only takes up
one page and does not bleed
across both. I like the way the
headline drops down slightly
across the two different words. It
is a good way to use space, the
red really helps the headline,
quote and stand first stand out.
The quote is a good way of breaking up the text and
providing an incite into the fictional character in the
interview to add depth and understanding.
The large image on the right hand
page is clever as it uses and over
the shoulder shot to show the model/
character from the front but also
adds the depth that they are in a
studio in there place of work and
creativity.
The only writing on the large image
is another large quote. This again
just gives the reader a deeper
understanding of the character.
The article is written in 3 block
columns and they are only broken up
by one quote, when it comes to mine
I would like to break my body of
writing with perhaps a few smaller
images and quotes. Also have
clearer paragraphs to break the
writing down.
It is keeping consistent with putting the magazine branding the corner of each page and the web address of the magazine along side
the page number. The pose the model is striking looks to robotic and false. I would maybe try and get an action shot if I was shooting
my model in a dance studio to show the skills of my theoretical character.
6. Ideas I will take from
• The subscription to the magazine on the contents page
• Spreading contents page across two pages and having
“features” and “regulars” categories
• Putting the name of the magazine in the top corner of each
page
• Being creative with the headline on the double page spread like
this magazine has by lowering the second word.
• Including Facebook and twitter links and addresses for my
magazine
7. Conclusion
In total I really like the magazine this student has produced from the
design and layout to the images used. I have criticized the magazine but
that is only down to my personal preference.
This magazine uses some great and unique features that make it stand
out to me as a reader and makes it very believable that it could be a
magazine in production being sold.
I have enjoyed analysing another students work, I believe it has helped
me further understand the task I have been set regarding my own
magazine.
