QUESTION 2 – SOCIAL GROUPS

There are many ways that we chose to present our main character Emily to our
audience. The first way is by showing that she is a typical girl though the use of
mise-en-scene. We have dressed her in a short white dress which has been
ripped and bloodied for effect. The white colour of the dress is used to show
the stereotype of innocence and weakness of girls. However as a binary
opposition to being innocent the dress is short which shows that she is also
quite promiscuous.
The next way Emily is represented is by being a typical blonde girl in society.
She has lots of makeup on which shows that she cares about her appearance a
lot. Her hair was also curled which showed that she puts a lot of time and
effort into her appearance. This could be to show that she is trying to cover up
the fact that she isn’t that smart; which is the stereotype of blonde girls. In
other media products we can compare her to characters such as Cher in the
film ‘Clueless’. Furthermore the phone message shows that she’s meant to be
going to a party which would show that she is quite popular and always got
somewhere to go. I would expect that she would be in classification group
grade A-B upper/middleclass. This is because her parents have quite a lot of
money which means she is probably spoilt which is what most blonde girls are.
Another way we have chosen to represent Emily is that she is a typical student.
In the sequence a shoe of hers is shown which will insinuate that she likes
wearing high heels and going out which is something that students like to do.
Another element which shows that she is student is that she has an iPhone
which we choose to show with a message from a friend. By having an iPhone
this shows that she is up to date with technology and knows what popular at
the moment. This is also a stereotype of a modern teenager.
Aside from mise on scene we have used facial expressions to show what the
emotional state of the character is. We have shown her crying, covering her
face and just generally looking very panicked because of the situation that she
finds herself. You could also say that she is clueless as to finding a way of
helping herself. This would be able to link in with the representation of being
blonde because she isn’t smart enough to help herself.
In addition to this she is represented by being vulnerable. This will also tie in
with the representations of being a blonde woman because they are weak and
usually need someone to saver her. Also being blonde will stop her from
thinking for herself.
