Genre which is a French word meaning “sort”, “type”, or “style”. The genre of a movie
can be recognized by it's features such as settings, props, characters etc. Genres
are defined by producers and understood by audience. The repertoire of elements
are the key elements of a film that are consistently repeated throughout a genre.
Each genre has its own repertoire of elements which defines it's genres. The
repertoire elements fall under 7 categories: iconography, style, props, setting,
narrative, characters and themes. The genre I have chosen is Teenage Drama.
Example of these films are: Wild Child, Confession Of A Teenage Drama Queen,
Teen Spirit, Sleepover, Thirteen and more. I really enjoy this genre as it usually
includes fashion, money, mean girls, relationships and more and as I live in Dubai
this is what i'm surrounded by which is people trying to show off. It as we'll makes me
feel like I have my life together as i don't relate to it and gives me a feeling of
Escapism. Although i'm going to be twisting the story.
It’s where the film/scene is taking place and when. Usually
introduced in the beginning of the story along with the characters.
The setting of a story can change throughout the plot. Setting locates
the film and it's narrative in a time and place. Physical settings can
be important for idea and identifying the genre such as in a dark
empty church, the audience are able to recognize that it's horror
film.
> High school - lockers, cafeteria, hall/corridor, field
> House of Character - typical high school party, sleepovers, kitchen
GENRE SETTING
“A theme is a underlying message, idea, or concept that motivates
characters to behave the way they do”
In Teenage drama films the most common themes are: Rebellion,
Drugs, Love, Mental Health, sexuality, Bullying, Depression and
more. The themes im thinking of using are Rebellion as it's
common in teen drama films. A good example of a teen film based
on rebellion is The Breakfast Club.
Mental Health - anxiety, eating disorder, and depression. An
example of a movie with this theme included is - The Perks Of
Being A WallFlower.
Iconography usually comes from the study of art. It was used
in the analysis of images. In media it's used as a part of
genre. The audience expect to see certain objects on screen
when we see a particular genre. Example: a western movie
should include cowboy hats, guns, horses, farms, etc.
Iconography could simply be defined as the hints in the film
that identifies the genre. The iconography i'm going to
include in my film are: High end cars, watches, jewellery,
bags, mobile phones, and more. This will be presented with
the location as it links together.
THEMES ICONOGRAPHY
Narrative is simply defined as how a story is being told to the audience.
It's the way that different elements are organized in a story to make it
meaningful to the audience. Containing a beginning, middle and an
end. The narratives that are mostly common in a teenage drama film is
a popular male/female falls in love with the unpopular or geek
male/female or about one character whose life changes throughout the
movie because of a problem which is usually resolved at the end.
Although my narrative is going to be about one character who is a
young girl, she has met a guy online called liam and they end up talking
and skyping and he tricks her into doing things and then threatens her
into doing more as he has photos of her.
Typically, the target audience for a teenage drama genre is Teenagers.
However throughout my research, there are many different sub-genres
for teen films such as; comedy, romantic, drama, horror, sci-fi, musicals,
action etc, which can target other types of audience that enjoy the sub-
genres. Also teen films have specified age certificates which varied from
PG 12,15, 18 etc. However, adults also watch teen films as it a way for
them to reminisce on the teen life they were once in. Girls have been
statistically proven to watch teen films more than boys so therefore they
appeal to females more.
The target audience i'm aiming for is from 12 - 30 year old females as I
feel they would relate to my story line.
NARRATIVE AUDIENCE
Characters are important in a film as they connect with the
audience watching the film and gives the audience a feeling of
connection. Characters are usually what engage the audience.
My character will be presented to the audience as a rich spoilt
teenager that has inside problems that people around her aren't
able to see.
I have chosen this idea as I feel that my character will be able to
connect with my target audience due to the female clientele.
Style is a group of conventions used by filmmakers to add
meaning to the film. It's linked to the genre as it defines
what the film is about. The style of my genre which is
Teenage Drama is social media and depression.
I'm going to use a lot of close up shots and long shots to
enhance the props to the audience so they are able to
recognize the genre easily.
