Verb Patterns
   Sometimes in a sentence, one verb follows
    another.
     For   example: We want to buy a new car.

               The first verb is 'want', the second verb is 'buy'.


   The verb patterns are dependent on the first
    verb.

   There are many types of pattern.
Verb + Infinitive with to

         Verb                            Example

Hope            I hope to see you next year.

Manage          He managed to find a new house.

Tend            Older people tend to need less sleep.

Want            He wants to buy a new car.

Decide          She decided to meet him.

Need            I need to go.

Seem            I seemed to sleep well last night.
Verb + -ing form

          Verb                          Example

Keep             She keeps going on. She never gives up.

Enjoy            He enjoys playing football.

Suggest          I suggest visiting him at night.

Try              We tried eating sushi.
Verb + Preposition + -ing Form

         Verb                           Example


Think about       He is thinking about changing his job.


Succeed in        She succeeded in playing tennis.


Look forward to   I’m looking forward to meeting you.


Talk about        They talked about travelling to London.
Verbs with two patterns and different
meaning


  Verb                                 Example

         I like to swim every day = I think it is a good idea to do this.
 Like
         I like swimming every day = I enjoy the activity. It gives me
         pleasure



         I hate to tell you this = I am sorry to tell you this
 Hate
         I hate flying = I do not like this activity
Remember:



 There is no rule or reason why one verb
  uses one pattern and not another. They
          just have to be learned.
Practise
   Correct the following sentences:
     He    wants going to the shop
     She    decided go to the cinema.
     I’m   not thinking about to meet her.
    I   need smoking a cigarette.
     They    always succeed in play chess.
     She    seemed ignoring him completely.
