IEEE WIE is one of the world’s leaders in changing
the face of engineering. The network connects over
100 countries to professional women around the
world, with the purpose of promoting and sustaining
the presence of women in Universities, Industries
and Institutions.
Italy is one of these counties taking part in the WIE
mission, sharing guidelines and goals.
IEEE WIE of the Italy section was born in December
2016 and is active in the whole territory.
3. WIE PoliMi
Affinity Group
WIE Affinity Group at PoliMi was born on the 7th
of March 2018, to share the values of the
association within our local community.
We are a group of passionate academic
professionals and students, working together for
a shared purpose.

4. Our Mission
In Italy women are very active in STEM (Science,
Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
disciplines, but they are still a minority.
However, enlarging the number of women in STEM
deals with the future growth of our country.
We aim at shaping gender parity culture inside
Politecnico di Milano and promoting the crucial role
played by heterogeneity in determining
performance.

§ Overcoming the stereotypes deriving from gender-
based biases
§ Eliminating any discrimination bias
§ Eliminating the idea that a woman needs support to
perform complex tasks
§ Reaching the respect of skills and backgrounds
§ Eliminating the astonishment of people seeing a
woman studying engineering.
§ Avoiding the perception of femininity being affected
by the inclination towards STEM
§ Improving the formation of heterogeneous working
group in university
§ Controlling the sexual reference, even in the form of
jokes, by a habit of empathy.

Activities

We pursue our mission through a series of different
activities:
§ Data collection for drawing up statistics and white
papers about the presence of women in STEM and
the role played by gender parity on performance.
§ High school meeting for making students aware
about existing gender parity barriers and inform them
about the engineering world.
§ University meet up with women of academia and
industry for presenting real world experiences.

Launched 4 years ago, the IEEE WIE ILC ( WIE
International Leadership Conference) provides
professional women in technology, whether in
industry, academia, or government, the
opportunity to create communities that fuel
innovation, facilitate knowledge sharing,
discussion and collaboration.
The mission is to inspire, engage and advance
women in engineering, through technical
seminars, humanitarian projects, networking
events and educational programs
