This document discusses scholarly conversation and how it occurs through the iterative process of citations. It defines scholarly conversation as ideas being formulated, debated, and weighed against one another over extended periods of time. The document examines how citations allow the conversation to be tracked from a sample source outward to sources it cites and is cited by, and back again, demonstrating how ideas build upon one another over time through scholarly debate and discussion. Examples of images related to scholarly conversation are also provided.
