It defines scholarly conversation as ideas being formulated, debated, and weighed against one another over extended periods of time. The document examines how citations allow the conversation to be tracked from a sample source outward to sources it cites and is cited by, and back again, demonstrating how ideas build upon one another over time through scholarly debate and discussion.
