Theory X and Theory Y were first explained by
McGregor in his book, "The Human Side of
Enterprise," and they refer to two styles of
management – authoritarian (Theory X) and
participative (Theory Y).

creating and environment withinemployees are
motivated which he called Theory X & Y.

About Douglas McGregor….
His 1960 book had a profound influence on
education practices.
According to McGregor, organizations with a Theory X
approach tend to have several tiers of managers and
supervisors to oversee and direct workers. Authority is rarely
delegated, and control remains firmly centralized.

Theory X managers tend to take a pessimistic view of their people, and
assume that they are naturally unmotivated and dislike work.

Theory X- Boss View of workers
- Dislike to work
- Lack ambition
- Irresponsible
- Need to be led

- Employees lack motivation/ avoid responsibility
- Management is controlling and centralized/
authority base
- Structural based very keen on how things need to
be done- rare acknowledgement and appreciation

The Disadvantages of Theory X
The restrictive nature of Theory X, for instance,
could cause people to become demotivated
and non-cooperative if your approach is too
strict. This may lead to high staff turnover and
could damage your reputation in the long
term.

Significance to management
- Douglas McGregor Theory X based management
has allowed the word to take on different
approach in the workplace. From the X theory
which was often for failure, McGregor introduced
the Y Theory-A different take on management.

Significance to management
- Not only has this influenced workplaces to
evaluate the way that they run their company in
the past, but it continues to allow them to
evaluate and alter techniques to work towards a
more Y based environment even today.

- In conclusion, it is a fact that more and more
companies are gearing towards the Y side of
things and letting go of the traditional- not so
successful X side.
