DEFINATION
‘the art of influencing and inspiring
subordinates to perform their duties
willingly, competently and
enthusiastically for the achievement of
group objectives.’
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
the ability to motivate followers to
pursue the goals the leader wishes to
achieve.’
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
an interpersonal relationship in which the
leader employs specific behavior and
strategies to influence individuals and
groups towards setting goals and
attaining them in specific
situations’(Sullivan and Decker, 1982).

Leadership Styles
There are four main types of leadership
styles. These are as follows:
•Autocratic or dictatorial leadership.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
•Democratic or participative
leadership.
•Laissez faire or free reign
leadership.
•Charismatic leadership.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Autocratic or Dictatorial Leadership
This type of leadership is also
referred to as authoritarian or
dominative leadership.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Autocratic leaders keep the decision
making ,authority and control in their
own hands and assume full responsibility
for all actions. It is the commanding style
‘Do as I say, because I am the boss.’
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
These leaders make all decisions without
seeking much input from individuals.
They structure the entire work situation
in their own way and expect the workers
to follow their orders and tolerate no
deviation from their orders.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
The leader believes that their
leadership is based upon the
authority conferred upon them by
some source, such as, position,
knowledge, and strength or the
power to punish or reward.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Democratic or Participative Leadership
This is the type of leadership where
the subordinates are consulted and
their feedback is taken into the
decision making process
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
The leader’s job is to moderate,
even though he makes the final
decision and he is solely responsible
for the results.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
The subordinates are encouraged to
demonstrate initiative and creativity,
take interest in setting plans and
policies, and participate fully in
decision making.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
This ensures:
•Better management-employee
relations
•Higher morale
• Greater job satisfaction
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Charismatic Leadership
A charismatic leadership style is where
the leader injects huge doses of
enthusiasm into their team, and is very
energetic in driving others forward.
However, a charismatic leader tends to
believe more in themselves than the
team.9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
This creates the risk that a project or
even an entire organisation might
collapse if the leader were to leave. In
the eyes of the followers, success is tied
up with the presence of the charismatic
leader.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
As such, charismatic leadership
carries great responsibility, and
needs a long-term commitment
from the leader.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Laissez Faire or Free Reign Leadership
Here leaders are loose and
permissive and abstain from leading
their staff. They foster freedom for
everyone and want everyone to feel
good.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
They are just figure heads and do
not give any direction. The leader
lets the subordinates plan, organise
and develop their own techniques
for accomplishing goals.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
The leader participates very little
and instead of leading and directing,
he just becomes one of the
members. This type of leadership is
highly effective when subordinates
are highly intelligent and are fully
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
aware of their roles and
responsibilities and have
knowledge and the skills to
accomplish tasks without direct
supervision.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Types of Leaders
There are various types of
leaders in our community but
five are discussed here.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Charismatic leader: the influence of
this leader comes from personality,
for example Adolf Hitler.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Very few possess this type of leadership
as it is inborn, that is, the personal
qualities of leadership cannot be
acquired by training; they can only be
modified by it.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Traditional leader: this position is
assured by birth, for example kings
and queens. There are few or no
opportunities for traditional
leadership in the work setting.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Situational leader: this is type of
leader can only be effective by being
in the right place at the right time.
This kind of leadership is too
temporary in nature to be of value in
an organisation.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Appointed leader: the leader’s
influence arises directly out of their
position, for example as a manager.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
That is it comes from a formal
appointment to a leadership role.
This position has influence with
legitimate power in the hierarchy
and it is a bureaucratic type of
leadership.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Functional leader: this position is
influenced by expert knowledge
(power). The leader secures their
position by what they do rather
than by what they are.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
A functional leader adapts their
behaviour to meet the competing
needs of his situation.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Qualities of a Good Leader
There are five qualities of a good
leader which include the following:
•Intelligence: not necessarily
knowledge about detailed or highly
specialised matters but good
common sense.9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
•Integrity: the capacity to set standards of
personal and official conduct which will
command the respect of others.
•Persuasiveness: the capacity to win others
to accept a point of view that is embodied
in a decision.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
•Judgment: the capacity to know the
strengths and weaknesses of the people
one works with and how to obtain their
maximum usefulness to the
organisation.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
•Loyalty: devotion to a cause and
also to the persons with whom
one works, and willingness to
defend subordinates against
external attack

THEORIES OF LEADERSHIP
There is a wide and ever growing
variety of theories to explain the
concept and practice of leadership.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Trait Theory
This theory postulates that people
are either born or not born with the
qualities that predispose them to
success in leadership roles.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
That is, that certain inherited
qualities, such as personality and
cognitive ability, are what underlie
effective leadership.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
There have been hundreds of studies to
determine the most important leadership
traits, and while there is always going to
be some disagreement, intelligence,
sociability, and drive (aka determination)
are consistently cited as key qualities.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Skills Theory
This theory states that learned
knowledge and acquired
skills/abilities are significant factors
in the practice of effective
leadership.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Skills theory by no means disavows the
connection between inherited traits and
the capacity to be an effective leader – it
simply argues that learned skills, a
developed style, and acquired
knowledge, are the real keys to
leadership performance.9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
It is of course the belief that skills
theory is true that warrants all the
effort and resources devoted to
leadership training and
development.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Situational Theory
This theory suggests that different
situations require different styles of
leadership. That is, to be effective in
leadership requires the ability to adapt or
adjust one’s style to the circumstances of
the situation.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
The primary factors that determine how
to adapt are an assessment of the
competence and commitment of a
leader’s followers. The assessment of
these factors determines if a leader
should use a more directive or supportive
style.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Contingency Theory
This theory states that a leader’s
effectiveness is contingent on how well
the leader’s style matches a specific
setting or situation. The difference
between this theory and situational is
that, in situational the focus is on
adapting to the situation,9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
whereas contingency states that effective
leadership depends on the degree of fit
between a leader’s qualities and style
and that of a specific situation or context
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Path-Goal Theory
This theory is about how leaders
motivate followers to accomplish
identified objectives. It postulates
that effective leaders have the ability
to improve the motivation of
followers
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
by clarifying the paths and removing
obstacles to high performance and
desired objectives.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
The underlying beliefs of path-goal
theory (grounded in expectancy
theory) are that people will be more
focused and motivated if
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
they believe they are capable of high
performance, believe their effort will
result in desired outcomes, and
believe their work is worthwhile.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Transformational Theory
This theory states that leadership is
the process by which a person
engages with others and is able to
create a connection that results in
increased motivation and morality in
both followers and leaders.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
It is often likened to the theory of
charismatic leadership that espouses
that leaders with certain qualities,
such as confidence, extroversion, and
clearly stated values, are best able to
motivate followers.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
The key in transformational
leadership is for the leader to be
attentive to the needs and motives
of followers in an attempt to help
them reach their maximum
potential.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
In addition, transformational leadership
typically describes how leaders can
initiate, develop, and implement
important changes in an
organization. This theory is often
discussed in contrast with transactional
leadership.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Transactional Theory
This is a theory that focuses on the
exchanges that take place between
leaders and followers. It is based on
the notion that a leader’s job is to
create structures that make it
abundantly clear what is expected of
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
his/her followers and also the consequences
(i.e. rewards and punishments) for meeting
or not meeting these expectations. This
theory is often likened to the concept and
practice of management and continues to be
an extremely common component of many
leadership models and organizational
structures.9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Servant Leadership Theory
This conceptualization of leadership
reflects a philosophy that leaders should
be servants first. It suggests that leaders
must place the needs of followers,
customers, and the community ahead of
their own interests in order to be
effective.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
The idea of servant leadership has a
significant amount of popularity within
leadership circles – but it is difficult to
describe it as a theory inasmuch as a set
of beliefs and values that leaders are
encouraged to embrace.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
LEADERSHIP FUNCTIONS.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Problem Solving.
Problem-solving is a mental process
that involves discovering, analysing
and solving problems.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Problem solving involves identifying
the problem and making choices
that help you to solve it. Various
problems are present in everyday
situations.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
On any given day, you may
encounter problems related to
patients, co-workers, mechanical
breakdown or even personal issues.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
The ultimate goal of problem-solving
is to overcome obstacles and find a
solution that best resolves the issue.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Effective problem solving skills
are therefore essential to the
delivery of healthcare services.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Steps in Problem-Solving
Identifying the problem: while it
may seem like an obvious step,
identifying the problem is not always
as simple as it sounds.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
In some cases, people might
mistakenly identify the wrong source
of a problem, which then makes
attempts to solve it inefficient or
even useless.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Defining the Problem: after the problem
has been identified, it is important to
fully define the problem so that it can be
solved.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Forming a strategy: the next step is
to develop a strategy to solve the
problem. The approach used will
vary depending upon the situation
and the individual's unique
preferences.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Allocating resources: of course, no
body has unlimited money, time and
other resources to solve a problem.
Before you begin to solve a problem,
you need to determine whether it is
a high priority.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
If it is an important problem, it is
probably worth allocating more
resources to solve it. If, however, it is
a fairly unimportant, then you do
not want to spend too much of your
available resources on it.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Monitoring progress: effective problem-
solvers tend to monitor their progress as
they work towards a solution. If they are
not making good progress toward
reaching their goal, they will re-evaluate
their approach or look for new strategies.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Evaluating the results: after a solution
has been reached, it is important to
evaluate the results to determine if it is
the best possible solution to the
problem. This evaluation might be
immediate, or it can be delayed.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Decision Making Process.
The term decision means to ‘cut off
in Latin’. This means that, out of all
the available alternatives you choose
one thing and then cut it off from
the others. A decision is therefore a
solution chosen from among
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
From the definition of the term decision,
it then follows that decision making is
simply evaluating various alternatives
and selecting the best one.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
DEFINATION
Decision making is a cognitive process
that results in the selection of a course of
action among several alternatives.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
People tend to use ‘problem solving’ and
‘decision making’ interchangeably.
Although they are somewhat related,
these two terms are not synonymous and
are completely different.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
THE DECISION MAKING PROCESS
Good decision-making is important at all
levels of an organisation. It begins with the
recognition or awareness of problems and
opportunities and concludes with an
assessment of the results of actions taken to
solve those problems. The process is made
up of the following seven steps:
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Identifying and Diagnosing Problems
The first step in the decision-
making process is the clear
identification of opportunities
or the diagnosis of problems
that require a decision.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Discrepancies between actual and
desired conditions alert a manager
to a potential opportunity or
problem.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Identifying Objectives
Objectives reflect the results the
organization wants to attain. Objectives
are often referred to as targets or
standards. Objectives can be expressed
for long spans of time (years or decades)
or for short spans of time (hours, days or
months).9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Long-range objectives usually direct much of the
strategic decision making of the organization,
while short-range objectives usually guide
operational decision-making.
Regardless of the time frame, objectives will
guide the ensuing decision-making process.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Generating Alternatives
Once an opportunity has been
identified or a problem diagnosed
correctly, a manager develops various
ways to achieve objectives and solve
the problem.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
This step requires creativity and
imagination. In generating
alternatives, the manager must keep
in mind the goals and objectives that
he or she is trying to achieve.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Ideally several different alternatives will
emerge. In this way, the manager
increases the likelihood that many good
alternative courses of action will be
considered and evaluated.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Evaluating Alternatives.
The fourth step in the process
involves determining the value or
adequacy of the alternatives
generated. Which solution is the
best?
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Fundamental to this step is the ability to
assess the value or relative advantages
and disadvantages of each alternative
under consideration. The result should be
a ranking of the alternatives.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
The Act of Choice
Decision making is commonly associated
with making the final choice. Although
choosing an alternative would seem to be
a straight forward proposition, simply
consider all the alternatives and select
the one that best solves the problem.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Because the best decisions are often based
on careful judgments, making a good
decision involves carefully examining all the
facts, determining whether sufficient
information is available, and finally selecting
the best alternative.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Implementing
When decisions involve taking
action or making changes, choosing
ways to put these actions or changes
into effect becomes an essential
managerial task.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
The keys to effective implementation are:
(1) Sensitivity to those who will be affected
by the decision and
(2) Proper planning consideration of the
resources necessary to carry out the
decision.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Those who will be affected by the
decision must understand the choice
and why it was made, that is, the
decision must be accepted and
supported by the people who are
responsible for its implementation.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
These needs can be met by involving
employees in the early stages of the
decision process so that they will be
motivated and committed to its
successful implementation.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Monitoring and Evaluating
No decision-making process is complete until
the impact of the decision has been
evaluated. Managers must observe the
impact of the decision as objectively as
possible and take further corrective action if
it becomes necessary.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Monitoring the decision is useful whether
the feedback is positive or negative.
Positive feedback indicates that the
decision is working and that it should be
continued and perhaps applied
elsewhere in the organization.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Negative feedback indicates either that
the implementation requires more time,
resources, effort, or planning than
originally thought or that the decision
was a poor one and needs to be re-
examined.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Difference between Problem solving
and Decision Making
People tend to use ‘problem solving’ and
‘decision making’ interchangeably.
Although they are somewhat related,
these two phrases are not synonymous
and are completely different.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
The major difference between the
two is; problem solving is a method
while decision making is a process.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Problem solving, as the name implies, is
solving a problem. Meaning, it is a
method wherein a group or an individual
makes something positive out of a
problem.
9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
Decision making, on the other hand, is a
process that is done many times during
problem solving. Decision making is the
key that will help in reaching the right
conclusion in problem solving.

Leadership

  • 2. DEFINATION ‘the art of influencing and inspiring subordinates to perform their duties willingly, competently and enthusiastically for the achievement of group objectives.’ 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 3. the ability to motivate followers to pursue the goals the leader wishes to achieve.’ 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 4. an interpersonal relationship in which the leader employs specific behavior and strategies to influence individuals and groups towards setting goals and attaining them in specific situations’(Sullivan and Decker, 1982). 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 5. Leadership Styles There are four main types of leadership styles. These are as follows: •Autocratic or dictatorial leadership. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 6. •Democratic or participative leadership. •Laissez faire or free reign leadership. •Charismatic leadership. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 7. Autocratic or Dictatorial Leadership This type of leadership is also referred to as authoritarian or dominative leadership. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 8. Autocratic leaders keep the decision making ,authority and control in their own hands and assume full responsibility for all actions. It is the commanding style ‘Do as I say, because I am the boss.’ 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 9. These leaders make all decisions without seeking much input from individuals. They structure the entire work situation in their own way and expect the workers to follow their orders and tolerate no deviation from their orders. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 10. The leader believes that their leadership is based upon the authority conferred upon them by some source, such as, position, knowledge, and strength or the power to punish or reward. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 11. Democratic or Participative Leadership This is the type of leadership where the subordinates are consulted and their feedback is taken into the decision making process 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 12. The leader’s job is to moderate, even though he makes the final decision and he is solely responsible for the results. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 13. The subordinates are encouraged to demonstrate initiative and creativity, take interest in setting plans and policies, and participate fully in decision making. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 14. This ensures: •Better management-employee relations •Higher morale • Greater job satisfaction 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 15. Charismatic Leadership A charismatic leadership style is where the leader injects huge doses of enthusiasm into their team, and is very energetic in driving others forward. However, a charismatic leader tends to believe more in themselves than the team.9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 16. This creates the risk that a project or even an entire organisation might collapse if the leader were to leave. In the eyes of the followers, success is tied up with the presence of the charismatic leader. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 17. As such, charismatic leadership carries great responsibility, and needs a long-term commitment from the leader. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 18. Laissez Faire or Free Reign Leadership Here leaders are loose and permissive and abstain from leading their staff. They foster freedom for everyone and want everyone to feel good. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 19. They are just figure heads and do not give any direction. The leader lets the subordinates plan, organise and develop their own techniques for accomplishing goals. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 20. The leader participates very little and instead of leading and directing, he just becomes one of the members. This type of leadership is highly effective when subordinates are highly intelligent and are fully 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 21. aware of their roles and responsibilities and have knowledge and the skills to accomplish tasks without direct supervision. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 22. Types of Leaders There are various types of leaders in our community but five are discussed here. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 23. Charismatic leader: the influence of this leader comes from personality, for example Adolf Hitler. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 24. Very few possess this type of leadership as it is inborn, that is, the personal qualities of leadership cannot be acquired by training; they can only be modified by it. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 25. Traditional leader: this position is assured by birth, for example kings and queens. There are few or no opportunities for traditional leadership in the work setting. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 26. Situational leader: this is type of leader can only be effective by being in the right place at the right time. This kind of leadership is too temporary in nature to be of value in an organisation. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 27. Appointed leader: the leader’s influence arises directly out of their position, for example as a manager. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 28. That is it comes from a formal appointment to a leadership role. This position has influence with legitimate power in the hierarchy and it is a bureaucratic type of leadership. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 29. Functional leader: this position is influenced by expert knowledge (power). The leader secures their position by what they do rather than by what they are. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 30. A functional leader adapts their behaviour to meet the competing needs of his situation. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 31. Qualities of a Good Leader There are five qualities of a good leader which include the following: •Intelligence: not necessarily knowledge about detailed or highly specialised matters but good common sense.9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 32. •Integrity: the capacity to set standards of personal and official conduct which will command the respect of others. •Persuasiveness: the capacity to win others to accept a point of view that is embodied in a decision. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 33. •Judgment: the capacity to know the strengths and weaknesses of the people one works with and how to obtain their maximum usefulness to the organisation. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 34. •Loyalty: devotion to a cause and also to the persons with whom one works, and willingness to defend subordinates against external attack 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 35. THEORIES OF LEADERSHIP There is a wide and ever growing variety of theories to explain the concept and practice of leadership. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 36. Trait Theory This theory postulates that people are either born or not born with the qualities that predispose them to success in leadership roles. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 37. That is, that certain inherited qualities, such as personality and cognitive ability, are what underlie effective leadership. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 38. There have been hundreds of studies to determine the most important leadership traits, and while there is always going to be some disagreement, intelligence, sociability, and drive (aka determination) are consistently cited as key qualities. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 39. Skills Theory This theory states that learned knowledge and acquired skills/abilities are significant factors in the practice of effective leadership. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 40. Skills theory by no means disavows the connection between inherited traits and the capacity to be an effective leader – it simply argues that learned skills, a developed style, and acquired knowledge, are the real keys to leadership performance.9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 41. It is of course the belief that skills theory is true that warrants all the effort and resources devoted to leadership training and development. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 42. Situational Theory This theory suggests that different situations require different styles of leadership. That is, to be effective in leadership requires the ability to adapt or adjust one’s style to the circumstances of the situation. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 43. The primary factors that determine how to adapt are an assessment of the competence and commitment of a leader’s followers. The assessment of these factors determines if a leader should use a more directive or supportive style. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 44. Contingency Theory This theory states that a leader’s effectiveness is contingent on how well the leader’s style matches a specific setting or situation. The difference between this theory and situational is that, in situational the focus is on adapting to the situation,9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 45. whereas contingency states that effective leadership depends on the degree of fit between a leader’s qualities and style and that of a specific situation or context 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 46. Path-Goal Theory This theory is about how leaders motivate followers to accomplish identified objectives. It postulates that effective leaders have the ability to improve the motivation of followers 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 47. by clarifying the paths and removing obstacles to high performance and desired objectives. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 48. The underlying beliefs of path-goal theory (grounded in expectancy theory) are that people will be more focused and motivated if 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 49. they believe they are capable of high performance, believe their effort will result in desired outcomes, and believe their work is worthwhile. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 50. Transformational Theory This theory states that leadership is the process by which a person engages with others and is able to create a connection that results in increased motivation and morality in both followers and leaders. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 51. It is often likened to the theory of charismatic leadership that espouses that leaders with certain qualities, such as confidence, extroversion, and clearly stated values, are best able to motivate followers. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 52. The key in transformational leadership is for the leader to be attentive to the needs and motives of followers in an attempt to help them reach their maximum potential. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 53. In addition, transformational leadership typically describes how leaders can initiate, develop, and implement important changes in an organization. This theory is often discussed in contrast with transactional leadership. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 54. Transactional Theory This is a theory that focuses on the exchanges that take place between leaders and followers. It is based on the notion that a leader’s job is to create structures that make it abundantly clear what is expected of 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 55. his/her followers and also the consequences (i.e. rewards and punishments) for meeting or not meeting these expectations. This theory is often likened to the concept and practice of management and continues to be an extremely common component of many leadership models and organizational structures.9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 56. Servant Leadership Theory This conceptualization of leadership reflects a philosophy that leaders should be servants first. It suggests that leaders must place the needs of followers, customers, and the community ahead of their own interests in order to be effective. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 57. The idea of servant leadership has a significant amount of popularity within leadership circles – but it is difficult to describe it as a theory inasmuch as a set of beliefs and values that leaders are encouraged to embrace. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 59. Problem Solving. Problem-solving is a mental process that involves discovering, analysing and solving problems. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 60. Problem solving involves identifying the problem and making choices that help you to solve it. Various problems are present in everyday situations. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 61. On any given day, you may encounter problems related to patients, co-workers, mechanical breakdown or even personal issues. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 62. The ultimate goal of problem-solving is to overcome obstacles and find a solution that best resolves the issue. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 63. Effective problem solving skills are therefore essential to the delivery of healthcare services. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 64. Steps in Problem-Solving Identifying the problem: while it may seem like an obvious step, identifying the problem is not always as simple as it sounds. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 65. In some cases, people might mistakenly identify the wrong source of a problem, which then makes attempts to solve it inefficient or even useless. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 66. Defining the Problem: after the problem has been identified, it is important to fully define the problem so that it can be solved. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 67. Forming a strategy: the next step is to develop a strategy to solve the problem. The approach used will vary depending upon the situation and the individual's unique preferences. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 68. Allocating resources: of course, no body has unlimited money, time and other resources to solve a problem. Before you begin to solve a problem, you need to determine whether it is a high priority. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 69. If it is an important problem, it is probably worth allocating more resources to solve it. If, however, it is a fairly unimportant, then you do not want to spend too much of your available resources on it. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 70. Monitoring progress: effective problem- solvers tend to monitor their progress as they work towards a solution. If they are not making good progress toward reaching their goal, they will re-evaluate their approach or look for new strategies. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 71. Evaluating the results: after a solution has been reached, it is important to evaluate the results to determine if it is the best possible solution to the problem. This evaluation might be immediate, or it can be delayed. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 72. Decision Making Process. The term decision means to ‘cut off in Latin’. This means that, out of all the available alternatives you choose one thing and then cut it off from the others. A decision is therefore a solution chosen from among 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 73. From the definition of the term decision, it then follows that decision making is simply evaluating various alternatives and selecting the best one. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 74. DEFINATION Decision making is a cognitive process that results in the selection of a course of action among several alternatives. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 75. People tend to use ‘problem solving’ and ‘decision making’ interchangeably. Although they are somewhat related, these two terms are not synonymous and are completely different. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 76. THE DECISION MAKING PROCESS Good decision-making is important at all levels of an organisation. It begins with the recognition or awareness of problems and opportunities and concludes with an assessment of the results of actions taken to solve those problems. The process is made up of the following seven steps: 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 77. Identifying and Diagnosing Problems The first step in the decision- making process is the clear identification of opportunities or the diagnosis of problems that require a decision. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 78. Discrepancies between actual and desired conditions alert a manager to a potential opportunity or problem. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 79. Identifying Objectives Objectives reflect the results the organization wants to attain. Objectives are often referred to as targets or standards. Objectives can be expressed for long spans of time (years or decades) or for short spans of time (hours, days or months).9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 80. Long-range objectives usually direct much of the strategic decision making of the organization, while short-range objectives usually guide operational decision-making. Regardless of the time frame, objectives will guide the ensuing decision-making process. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 81. Generating Alternatives Once an opportunity has been identified or a problem diagnosed correctly, a manager develops various ways to achieve objectives and solve the problem. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 82. This step requires creativity and imagination. In generating alternatives, the manager must keep in mind the goals and objectives that he or she is trying to achieve. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 83. Ideally several different alternatives will emerge. In this way, the manager increases the likelihood that many good alternative courses of action will be considered and evaluated. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 84. Evaluating Alternatives. The fourth step in the process involves determining the value or adequacy of the alternatives generated. Which solution is the best? 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 85. Fundamental to this step is the ability to assess the value or relative advantages and disadvantages of each alternative under consideration. The result should be a ranking of the alternatives. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 86. The Act of Choice Decision making is commonly associated with making the final choice. Although choosing an alternative would seem to be a straight forward proposition, simply consider all the alternatives and select the one that best solves the problem. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 87. Because the best decisions are often based on careful judgments, making a good decision involves carefully examining all the facts, determining whether sufficient information is available, and finally selecting the best alternative. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 88. Implementing When decisions involve taking action or making changes, choosing ways to put these actions or changes into effect becomes an essential managerial task. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 89. The keys to effective implementation are: (1) Sensitivity to those who will be affected by the decision and (2) Proper planning consideration of the resources necessary to carry out the decision. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 90. Those who will be affected by the decision must understand the choice and why it was made, that is, the decision must be accepted and supported by the people who are responsible for its implementation. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 91. These needs can be met by involving employees in the early stages of the decision process so that they will be motivated and committed to its successful implementation. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 92. Monitoring and Evaluating No decision-making process is complete until the impact of the decision has been evaluated. Managers must observe the impact of the decision as objectively as possible and take further corrective action if it becomes necessary. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 93. Monitoring the decision is useful whether the feedback is positive or negative. Positive feedback indicates that the decision is working and that it should be continued and perhaps applied elsewhere in the organization. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 94. Negative feedback indicates either that the implementation requires more time, resources, effort, or planning than originally thought or that the decision was a poor one and needs to be re- examined. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 95. Difference between Problem solving and Decision Making People tend to use ‘problem solving’ and ‘decision making’ interchangeably. Although they are somewhat related, these two phrases are not synonymous and are completely different. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 96. The major difference between the two is; problem solving is a method while decision making is a process. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 97. Problem solving, as the name implies, is solving a problem. Meaning, it is a method wherein a group or an individual makes something positive out of a problem. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
  • 98. Decision making, on the other hand, is a process that is done many times during problem solving. Decision making is the key that will help in reaching the right conclusion in problem solving. 9/15/2019 By Jones H.M-MBA
