Over the course of their unit, the group gained basic and further knowledge of editing, filming and planning from the tasks presented. They learned to use their time valuably from rushing to complete their first one minute video clip. This helped them plan more effectively for their final film. While most group members were unfamiliar with cameras for their first task, they improved their skills and added more camera angles and shots to their final project. Editing software was also a new challenge initially but they learned basic skills like transitions that helped when editing their higher quality final piece.
1. Over the course of Unit G321, we feel that because of the tasks presented, we
have basic and further knowledge of certain aspects of editing, filming and
planning.
At the start of the year we were asked, in our preliminary task, to create a short
clip (lasting one minute in total) of any genre. We were given 2 weeks to
complete this task; this included getting our ideas planned out, recorded and
edited. When we finished our overall product, our group was satisfied with the
final product, especially with the given time to prepare.
This taught us that we should use our time valuably and not waste any of it. With
that new lesson in mind, when it came to making our final film, our group made
sure to plan effectively for it and we made sure that we didn’t waste any time.
In our first video, the filming was rushed a fair bit. Most of our group hadn’t used
a camera before and didn’t know how to actually work it. Due to that fact, our
prelim only had one person filming it through out. This meant a lack of variety in
the points of view and limited amount of camera angles and different shots for
each shot we did.
Since then however, we had improved with the knowledge of how to use a
camera, even setting up tripods for steadier shots. We feel like the first task
helped a lot in the fact that without it, when it came to the final task, our final
film would have lacked a lot of particular camera angles and a variety of shots
that have made our piece have a certain edge to it.
When faced with the task of editing the first movie, our group didn’t really have a
clue with how to use the video editing software presented (having previously
worked with lesser applications such as Windows Movie Maker). Despite this,
our group knuckled down and got the basic grasp of the programme. We soon
learnt basic skills that helped us complete our prelim task, such as being able to
create a successful transition between each clip.
These basic skills helped when it came to editing our final piece as it was like
second nature to us all. Our skills at editing improved greatly from the first task
and using our knowledge gained since then it was no concern at all to improve
our film with more video effects and explore a range of different sound
techniques.
Overall, our group has gained a profound knowledge of certain skills, such as
editing, filming and planning, which has allowed us to create our final piece.
