Anything Goes Promotional Pitch for School Production
1. Anything Goes Analysis and Promotional Pitch
AnythingGoes is a musical originallymade in 1934, with the bookwritten
by TimothyCrouse and John Weidman, and the lyrics and music
written/composed byCole Porter. The storyfollows young BillyCrocker, a
Wall Street Broker, who has fallen in love with heiress Hope Harcourt and
stows away on a ship Hope is going on (from New York to England).
Learningthat Hope is to marry Lord Evelyn Oakleigh,Billy tried countless
ways to be close to Hope and to convince her to marry him instead.Along
with those two is Reno Sweeney, Billy’s best friend,Moonface Martin and
Erma who all try to help Billyand Hope become a couple. In the end, after
Reno poses as a Chinese woman (Plum Blossom)who Lord Evelyn admits
to havinga one night stand with, the marriage between Hope and him is
cancelled and Hope ends up with Billy while Evelyn marries Reno.
AnythingGoes has been revived several times in both the USA and Great
Britain, and has become a very popularchoice for schools to put on their
own stages. It’s also won 3 TonyAwards for Best Revival of a Musical,
Best Performance of a Featured Actor in a Musical, and Best
Choreography,as well as winningDrama Desk Awards for Outstanding
Revival of a Musical, OutstandingActress in a Musical, and Outstanding
Choreography.
The musical is well known for taking place on a ship and thus it’s nautical
theme, its fantasticchoreography, and its comedy. With this in mind,it’s
worth consideringthese as the USPs of the showand ensure they have
some kind of place in the marketing for ourproduction. However, just
because these USPs attract the audience when the showis on a London
Stage, doesn’t mean it’s also going to attract an audience to our show in
Ringwood. That is because the two shows havea major location and
casting difference, meaningthey have different target audiences. The
Target Audience for a London showare a bit older, roughlyin the age
range of 40 to 70 years old and more aimed at females, all grade C1/C2to
A on the NRS. However, that’s not to say that those younger or those
male can’t enjoy the show: the humourand characters are more aimed at
that age and gender though. The Target Audience for ourschool
productions has always been familymembers and friends who are there
2. to see someone they know in the show, with the occasional ex-student
appearingto give their old school some moral support. As a result, the
age range for said Target Audience is large and wild, roughly10 to 70
years old of both genders if the younger siblings and/orolder
grandparents showup to see a familymember in the performance.
Because of this large Target Audience, the NRS Grade varies too, ranging
from E to C1/C2s and maybe a B dependingon the job the parents ofone
of the performers could have.
There’s a good range of publicitymaterials that the school could use to
advertise anythinggoes: Word of Mouth is the most simplisticone they
use, since if a student is in the productionthey’ll definitelyhaveto tell
theirparents about it,and theirparents will more than likelycome see
the show(or a familymember may get told and come see it, such as a big
brother or sister, etc). A TV advert would be great to bringin new
audience members, since more than the typical target audience would
see the advertisement.Social media would also be good at bringingin
new audience members, and this could tie into the Word of Mouth
method since someone could see the advert and then tell those they
know about the show, potentiallydrawingin more audience members.
Flyers and leaflets would be a good way of lettingothers know, but they
could very well be considered junkmail and get binned.I thinkthat out of
all the options available forthe school, the Social Media advertising
would be ideal:Ringwood School has a few accounts which we could post
the adverts on,which may be better than a random pop-up on Facebook
which gets closed or ignored. As much as a TV advertisement would be
incredible and no doubt drawin a lot of audience members, it’s just too
expensiveto do: there’s also the issue of it beingbroadcasted across all of
England, and people who are several hours away from the school aren’t
going to make the trip all the way down to see a school’s show.
